This Side Two Tour… My 3rd Encounter with Mr Hayes… February 17th 2008, 12pm… I’d finally been up for an hour sorting out the cat’s breakfast as well as mine… Couldn’t eat much, was so excited about today as well as nervous. I’d planned with my good friend Amy to go early and queue, to be able to get to the first row. So yeah was slightly nervous about that, but ok. Her farther would be dropping us off at Cov’s station after picking me up round half 4ish. So that we could get there early-ish and wait in line. It didn’t take me long to get showered, dressed and ready for the evening. I was basically done by 3pm. My hair looked great, died it the day before and just straightened it today, and I looked pretty alright with me new red top with gold Patten along with my grey jeans from the time machine show and brown boots. All looked good, just had plenty of time to muck about. Got picked up by Ian and me Amy and after picking up her mate Lisa, whom I knew at college, we headed off to the station. We got the train pretty much straight away from being dropped off and it was 20 mins till we got to Birmingham new street, and then walked to Carling Academy which wasn’t far at all from the station and took merely 10 mins. Finally we where there and queuing up with the others. There were roughly 40 people before us, but that wasn’t anywhere near the people who came after us… I hadn’t seen so many people before waiting in line for anything. No wonder why Brim sold out and then got another show, and then the first show got extra tickets etc etc… LOL! I think it’s safe to say that us people round the midlands are addicted to Darren… LoL. Well, except two others we met that night that weren’t local to Birmingham. Sue and Trish, two lovely ladies who joined us in the queue behind us. They where very lovely and even joined us inside the venue. They where great, Sue who I mainly chatted too most of the night (She was sweet but man she can talk) was fab. She had seen Darren (including Savage Garden) 13 times!!! Her husband doesn’t understand her and her boys (who where first into Savage Garden before her) blame her for ruining Darren’s music for them. LoL. From waiting since 5:40pm till 7:10, we where finally let in! Hurray! Soon as we got into the place it seemed that our chances of getting to the front of the stage was over! Until I saw Amy dash towards the right hand side of the stage (Justin Shave’s side) and there was space!!! Me and Amy where in the front row with Lisa behind us. My dream had finally came true, at last front row to see Darren, and OMG we where close to the stage. We where basically (now finally figuring out the maths… LoL) 180cms away from the stage!!! (Just imagine two single beds joined together at one end, we’re standing at one end while the stage was at the other end!) That’s how close we where!!! After waiting for just under two hours more for Darren, I gained a headache… Groan! But I was alright, I didn’t go and get a drink cus after Amy and Lisa declined my offer I couldn’t be asked. LoL. Plus seeing how jammed packed the venue had become, sod it! Haha. So we just chatted to Sue and Trish… Well, mainly I and Sue chatted, again she’s great and can talk forever. But then finally, after a bit of a drama with someone pretending to be VIP in front of us in the space between stage and audience… Maggz came along and did not know em, so along came security and pushed them along. Haha. As well as stopping worrying about what time Darren finished cause we couldn’t miss the last train home. The lights dimmed down, the music before Darren came on played… It was cool, no idea what it was thought… And then came out Shave, Steve Young and Darren! Yey!!! I love being front row!!! Ha! All the guys looked amazing; Darren wore all black minus the belt, bright red… Gorgeous. He went straight to the microphone and started what he does best. I have no idea what he was singing, didn’t recognise it but then I heard the first few words from Hero and immediately was happy. Hero was a great way to start off the show, but in all honestly it was when Bombs started to play my little face gleamed! Ever since hearing about the song before the release of TDTWM I’ve always wanted to know about it, and then finally hearing it I wanted desperately to know how it would be performed live… (I envied everyone at the final Soho gig when Darren performed it that night LoL) but finally I heard it, it’s fan-bloddy-tastic!!! How he did it was this, you know everything in the song like the extra bits such as you fell in love with the dream to fuck forever endlessly but you don’. Huh? But that’s ok. He does the “huh” and all the other extra bits as well as actions and movements to all the descriptions in the song. It’s fantastic! Totally my highlight of the evening. After that incredible performance, came Sense of Humour. Never really been a fan of that song from the Spin album, but was good live. I enjoyed holding up Sue’s banner with her telling Darren she’d seen him 13 times… He saw us holding it! (And again later when Sue totally went for it and held it out right on her own… Good for her!) It was fab! He saw me… hahaha! I was just chuffed for Sue for doing it. So glad she did, she beamed afterwards. Conversation… Gorgeous! It was very moving, and from the way he sang it I could tell it still was very close to his heart, as well as to me. I’ve been where he was, so any song on that matter whomever it may be about gets to me. It’s a beautiful song, I’m so glad he performed it. Finally it came round to my fave track out of Darren’s solo career which I just adore… Random Blinking Light, a bside off of The Darkness single. Finally I got to hear it live, and thank you Darren and Shave and Steve for making it even more beautiful… I so want that live performance recorded. Gorgeous. Gunning down romance… I feel like such a twit writing this but for the first half of the chorus singing along to it, I had no idea what it was. LOL! I knew the lyrics but couldn’t place the title, until it finally dawned on me. LoL. And its one of my fave SG songs… Haha. Apart from that embarrassing miss-hap again it was great; Steve Young was great doing the guitar… The chemistry between them two (Darren and Steve) is great. A Hundred challenging things a boy can do… Aka, Richard’s song. The one song (minus Bombs) is the one I was really looking forward too and which I had prepared tissues for. LoL. That song gets to me ever since hearing it and realising who & what it was about. It’s a song Darren told us while Steve finally did the guitar loop (set list mix up, Darren blamed Steve… LoL) about Richard’s childhood and his parents growing up as a coal miner who was scared of the dark and his mother who wasn’t around the area and taught herself English. They both passed away while Richard was a boy and the song’s also about how Darren met and fell in love with Richard and instantly forgave his past in a way when he knew what Richard went through and how much love he had inside him… Now you can understand why I brought the tissues. LoL. Thankfully I didn’t need them; I held on tightly and declined the nice offer of one from me Amy. (Thanks love) I love that song! That should’ve been recorded too! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

After such a beautiful moment cue more upbeat track as well as the return of Shave’s Keytar! Yey! It was Setting Sun, and it was fab. Steve had a break and sat on the side of the stage but still sang along and tapped away where he sat. He looked so cute sitting there watching Shave and Darren in the middle of the stage doing their thing. It was great and I’m certain I saw Darren muck about with Shave’s Keytar pushing some of the keys and he finished off playing. LoL. I don’t think Shave cares much. LoL. Never been a fan of Maybe, but hearing it live that night… I am changed and I adore it now. If you’re not keen on it, once you hear it live I think you’ll change like I did. Mine soon came along, and WOW! It was fantastic. Steve again on vocals with Darren was brill; he has such a good singing voice. The song sounds just as chilling and darkish (if you know what I mean) live as it does on the remix savage garden album. After Mine I couldn’t believe what I heard afterwards and almost started laughing. Darren started singing the rap part from All Around Me! I can’t stand the rap on the song but live it actually sounds pretty good, especially that it was for Dirty! That performance was great! It had a few other songs cut into it and one which was a Prince track. Can’t remember which one but was good being thrown in. Loved the dancing. Was again fantastic. Next came the part in which every night of the side two tour gets recorded… Casey. Darren told us that they where recording it for the special release thing, and that he’d pretty much messed it up on the first few nights, and that if we wanted to sing along we could do. So we did. And it was great! I think everyone sang along, and even Darren said we where good (or he was just being nice). He did say before performing the next track; Sing to me, that we sang to him very well. Yey! LoL! After Sing to me, which again gorgeous, Darren had his break along with the other two and then Steve returned back for the encore. Someone shouted out towards him to sing to us, he just grinned and picked up his guitar and started playing as Darren returned to the stage. He spoke to us for a brief second thanking us for a wonderful show and letting them come back to Birmingham, and then performed a song I wasn’t expecting… Unlovable. I don’t care followed next and the return of Shave to his keyboard. Yey! He did a great job on the song, which is a fave SG bside of mine. That ended and then came the last song of the evening… So Beautiful the remix version. What a great was to end the evening, the remix of the song is amazing and I literally almost lost it when Darren suddenly ran across to our side of the stage and jumped off the stage onto one of the cargo boxes next to it… He was so close and O.M.G I couldn’t stop starring, or move, or do bugger all! 6 seconds he was there and I was just in heaven! And once he jumped back onto the stage I gotta say it, he has such a cute arse! I couldn’t help myself but look, ok stare. He shouldn’t have wiggled it in my face! LoL! If he ever reads this and if I ever met him, I am so gonna be embarrassed… Oh well, least he should remember me. LoL! The show was incredible, a wonderful hour and a half worth of my time and of the hours before waiting. We parted our ways with Sue and Trish (Hope to see them again next time round), bought my merchandise (T-shirt, Bag, Two Mugs and badge set) and got the last train off home to Cov. It was truly amazing, Darren Steve and Shave where fantastic and it was great having them back to Birmingham and for those who are worried about Darren leaving the music scene don’t be. He promised that night that he would return. That’s probably gotta be the best part of the night, Ok maybe second after the arse watching but you know. LoL! Loved it! And I can not believe that I have seen Darren now 3 times in under a year… Wow. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I want those cherry blossom lights so badly! Lovely review, by the way. Super detailed and nicely written reviews are the best thing you can get when you're unable to attend the tour. |
