I had some problems getting the right ammo for my Dutch Steyr Mannlicher M95 rifle. The military ammo in cal. 6.5x53.5mmR(made in the 1920's and 30's) is just too expensive over here so....I started to reform .303 cases. Here are some pictures I made from reforming .303 British to 6.5mm Dutch for my Dutch Steyr Mannlicher M95. In the first picture you see 4 cases. From left to right: 1) .303 case made by Artillerie Inrichtingen (yes, made in Holland) in 1959, used once in a LeeEnfield No. 4 Mk1. 2) Reformed .303 case not yet trimmed back to 53.5mm. 3) Reformed .303 case trimmed back to 53.5mm(has to be fire formed) 4) An original 6.5 Dutch case from 1936. ![]() Results are very good. Take a look at this picture. From left to right you can see : 1) A clip with Dutch military ammo manufactured in the 1930's. 2) A German steel cased WW 2 copy of the Dutch round. 3) A post war factory reloaded round made in Holland used for hunting. 4) One of my own reloaded cartridges. This time I used a reformed .303 boxer case manufactured by Winchester, 34 grains of VihtaVuori N140(Finnish) powder and a 147 grains spitzer soft point bullet manufactured by Lapua. ![]() It doesn't work that well all the time. Here is a picture of two cases that didn't survive reforming. The left case is made by AI and I tried to reform this one without lubrication.(you have to try everything  ) The case on the right is made by Winchester and I tried to reform this one to fast. It broke down in the neck. ![]() Reforming is not the problem with the AI cases. The problem was getting the correct primers, because they are Berdan and a bit bigger than the usual 5.5mm(.216 inch) primers. These cases use 6.45mm (.253 inch) Berdan primers. ![]() I "googled" all over the world and where did I find them.......covered with dust on a shelf in a gun store 15 miles from my hometown. Met vriendelijke groet, Martin |

Martin, you did a very good job on reforming the cases. And your pictures and information is good so that others might be able to read this post and get some good info if they need it. Finding what you needed close to home reminds me of one of my purchases. I had been looking all over for a Schmidt-Rubin K-31, but just couldn't find any in any of the gun stores around where I usually looked for them. Then one day, I noticed a small gun shop about 15 miles from my house, stopped and went in and they had a whole rack of K-31's and at a good price. So I got myself one and refinished it and it looks like it just came out of the factory. And the best part is; it's a real shooter and very accurate. |

That reformed .303 boxer case by Winchester and the 147 grain spitzer looks like it would work as a good hunting round and the long bullet length looks like it would penetrate a hard skinned animal very well. What does your 6.5x53.5mmR load compare to on a modern day caliber? |
