That man has a very nice deer stand and that's good if you can afford it. I keep looking at it though and wonder why our conservation departments keep wondering why the hunting population is decreasing. Then I look at the rates that states charge out of state hunters to hunt on Federal land in their state. Prices have gone up on permits, licenses, land leases and hunting clubs. The young hunters just getting started cannot afford to hunt as it's too expensive, so we lose new hunters. The states lose revenue from lack of new hunters and all the Mom and Pop stores that depend on hunters stopping by during hunting seasons also loses. So what I see is that man's deer stand is an example of why our hunting population has declined so much in the last 10 years or so. It just doesn't get much better than sitting on a stump underneath a big white oak tree and spending some time there in solitude enjoying all the sights and sounds of nature while waiting on a deer to walk by. That's what hunting is about!

almntman; Wise words. The cause and effect are basically indisputable. That being said what do you think about the idea that that is what they hope to achieve. Small step at a time. (in this case increases in fees and or new fees and taxes.) Then they will cry when the dear are overpopulated and starving as the herds are not culled. They will then scream when level heads HAVE TO cull the herds to stop starvation of the herds they claim to protect. The liberals fail to see that people like you and the GWEH are keeping nature in balance, keeping history and tradition alive, and putting food on the table.

VMI, Some of the states are already complaining about a loss in revenue due to declining hunting population numbers. There's more money involved in it than the average person would realize. This month's issue of Peterson's Hunting magazine had an article about it and that the hunting sport was on the decline due to too high of prices on the average hunter. We can't get young kids into hunting anymore as they just can't afford the increases in fees. Say a state has to rely on 100,000 out of state hunters for revenues. They increase their fee rate and only 60,000 hunters show up the next year. They lose revenue so they again make an increase and the next year after that only 45,000 hunters show up. That's why it's extremely hard to attract a youngster to the sport, it's not affordable anymore. |

James, A lot of the decrease in hunters is due to development and loss of hunting lands. I might go as far as to say that is also a reason for hunting on posted land, to which I plead guilty. I'm not sure about down where you live but in this part of VA development is everywhere. Some counties are banning hunting all together because there is just too many houses and too many people. In those counties where you can still hunt almost all the land is taken. You have to belong to a hunt club it seems so you can find property to use. |

almntman; Basic Supply and Demand. The higher the cost the less demand. This is the same reasoning which escapes Obama about taxes. Lower taxes and people spend more creating economic activity and growth and generating increased revenue. WHAT A CONCEPT. JFK, Regan and Bush figured this out. |

TD, we have some public land that the state runs to hunt on, but I rarely hunt on any of it. I prefer to hunt on private land that I get permission or either a hunting club. It's safer the way I do it as the public hunting areas have too much pressure and you never know who's shooting where. VMI, I think Sam Walton had the supply and demand figured out many years ago, sell at low prices, get a lot of customers and make big money, but make small profits on items. Other stores seemed to want to sell at high prices, make a lot of money off a few sales and in the end not make a lot of money. |

James, One of the reasons I left the woods a few years ago is that, as you say, you never know who is shooting where. It got to the point I would see groups drinking quite a bit at a stand and I basically didn't want to feel like Mr Buck. At one time we had permission to hunt 400 acres that was privately owned as long as we checked in with the owner. That was great because he could control the number that was in the woods and most everyone was respectful. Unfortunately, one of the guys we carried there one day decided to sneak in some beer and toss the cans on this man's property. Needless to say, we lost our rights and don't blame the owner one bit!!! |

When a landowner gives you trespass rights, it's good to help them out. I have permission to hunt 5 different properties and if I see a can or bottle or litter I pick it up and carry it out with me. The landowners like it and they notice when you do it. You make friends and get to hunt a lot of private land. My motto has always been to be a good steward of the land that you have permission to use.

You are absolutely correct, James. I won't tell you what happened to the fool with us who cost us our hunting land but he was NOT a happy or comfortable camper!!! |

He's obviously got a wife, or there's something 'wrong' with him! The place is to pretty to be a 'tree stand'! We have quite a few around us - none as nice! People around here don't care about private land or where they hunt - they just fire away! Bud and I don't take walks up into the woods nor do I hang out my wash during hunting season! |

TD, That sure is a fancy huntin' house, but seems to me, he should have put a toilet in it,if he's gonna be drinkin' all that beer! I bet it smells real good around there, but I guess he is shootin' over corn and saltlicks! I'll take my climber and a nice TALL Poplar tree over that GAUDY GETUP any day! COME ON BOW SEASON IN BAMA! 15 OCT 08!

Actually JohnnyReb ... after looking at the pictures several times and trying to place 'objects' ... I don't believe the hot tub is actually part of the house. I can't find where it would be on the house pics and that feature should really stand out. |
