This story will be published in the July edition of "The Veterans Voice." Please help me get the word out so that someone may be able to help Mr. Nick Leuis: Brothers, Nick Leuis of Butte, Mt and Ronald Peterson of Commerce City, Colorado, were joyously re-united for the first time since 1940. Nick was 5 years old when they were separated and only had vague memories of Ronald, but they were enough to keep him searching for 68 years. His hopes were realized after he asked Marnie Mowles and the Veterans' Voice for help in is search. Through one of Marnie's contacts, Brendalee Buckmaster, the reunion was made possible. Ronald was totally unaware that he had siblings. He was 2-1/2 when he was sent to an orphanage in Wyoming. to be adopted by the Peterson family. He knew he had been adopted, but had promised his adopted parents that he wouldn't look for his natural family, but was certainly happy that Nick had made no such vow. Nick and Ronald became reacquainted by phone, with both military veterans shedding more than a tear or two. At the beginning of June, Ronald caught a bus to visit his big brother. Nick said that he knew him the moment he saw him! Nick and Ronald made good use of their time together by going camping and fishing. Nick jokingly teased that he was finally able to teach his little brother how to fish. Though nervous at first, it amused them both to see how much alike they were, with similar personalities and tastes. The brothers shared pictures from their youth and intervening years. Nick related his fond memories, from long ago, of their older brother Thomas D. (Painter) Verley, to Ronald. Nick was heatbroken when at last he located Thomas, with the help of Mrs Ann Robertson, only to find that he had passed away in 2003. The last time they were together was on Christmas Eve, when they were still children. Also located was a stepbrother, Ralph Nicholson of Hawaii. They still have one more brother they are searching for, Benjamin George Painter. If anyone has any information about him, please contact the Veterans' Voice, so Nick's long search might finally reach its end. What a wonderful thing you did Sunshine! That's a wonderful story, even though it's bitter sweet because they were separated for a lifetime, and found one of their brothers after he had already passed away. I hope they find their other brother before it's too late. Good job! |
