It was a long, cold, icy Winter, but in the last few days I've felt the sun getting warmer, seen my tulips and daffodils sprouting up through the ground and Bud and I have greeted this couple on every morning walk!

So happy they've found their way back home! HONK!!

Yep them guys been flying around here. Along with the sandhill cranes.

But it sure didn't feel like spring until this evening here. The wind was whippin off the lake and making it feel like Alaska most of the day. Sun was nice and warm if you could get out of the wind.

The driveway is still about 4 inches thick with ice in any spot the sun don't see.

The rivers are pretty much open now, so if we get that nice warm rain to burn that ice off, that will be a good thing.

I guess I spoke to soon ...wishful thinking! But Spring REALLY is on it's way! It only takes a couple of nice, warm days and the ice will gone CW!
As far as Ralph and Gert go Dawg, it's always been a favorite of Bud's to have a roll in Goose poop! Eureka!! Spring is here!!
Woke up this morning to a good four inches of snow - wet and heavy - and this robin knocking at the windows - "hey lady, let me in"!

Mornin' TD :coffee:

and anyone else :coffee:

Ground looks pretty frosty this morning - nor snow on it, but frosty. Supposed to be in the 40's later so the 'ol Maple Sap should be flowing pretty heavily today.

Hope everyone has a great day and stays out of the goose doo-doo

And the dog finds something else to roll in......not quite sure what could be better, because they usually find something that stinks even more.....like a dirty baby diaper

Mornin' right back at ya CW.

Its a crazy time of the year here in VA ... the March winds are still blowing so we go from 75 degrees one day to 50 degrees the next. Today will be in the 50s but mostly sunny. It looks like a great day to get things done around the house.

Gonna set the birdbath back upright and fill it up for our bird population. They're jumping in the upside down bath now and wondering where the water is

Will probably head up to a major sporting goods store sometime today to check out their propane campstoves and a portable (I don't know what you call it ... a tent but with no sides) canopy? I have season tickets to the Richmond Nascar races and with the new truck will probably set that up and sit outside the track and grill, etc.

I feel for y'all putting up with that snow and ice ... I prefer HOT!!!

Sounds like good place to set up the lawn chair, start the Weber, throw on some hot dawgs and tip a few beers.

Supposed to get the campfire up and going, burn up whatever the dawgs dragged up from the woods laying in the yard (yep, they roll all over that stuff, too) and try to create some "global warming" and roast some dawgs on a stick......just hopin' Al Gore shows up, so we can roast him, too. :camping:

I hear it's nearly 100 degrees in Iraq. I don't think I'm quite ready for that blast of heat! The blue sky and sunshine has been such a treat. We might get up to 50 degrees tomorrow!
Still enough time to think out what you want to plant this year! :)

Last email the son-in-law sent he stated it already was OVER 100.....

Last email Gary sent he also noted that it was a little on the toasty side, too.....

In good 'ol Frozen Tundra here, we have just hit a heat wave - after nearly 5 friggin months - WE FINALLY BROKE 50 DEGREES! :banana-man:

Rainy and cold today, but the promise of 50's for the weekend is good enough for me! Winter sure made a mess around here, and it will be a good weekend for cleaning it all up!
Dawg, just like the geese - if you see any penguins flying overhead, don't look up with your mouth open!!

I'll try to remember that sage advice, Ali :P

Virginia is coming out of another mild winter with only 1 or 2 itty-bitty snows that disappeared within a day or two. Fairly typical for this part of Virginia. The temperatures have been trying to climb above 70s for over a month but have been held down by the rain, damp overcast, and high winds. I believe the high winds are over and it is finally going to break the 70s for good. I turned on the irrigation system yesterday and filled the bird bath for my young feathered friends. The weather report called for thunderstorms this entire weekend but right now the sky is pretty blue, with lazy fluffy clouds and temperature rising ... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes!!!

We had a beautiful week here - 50's and 60's!! I finished all the yard work today, and tonight I'm going to bed with my old friend Ben Gay!
Best news yet - since the snow has melted, we've found over 30 balls on the golf course on our walks with Bud ....and it's only April!!!

The rain and cold has landed itself here, too CW! Tomorrow promises to be miserable!
I think Ben Gay will nearly kill you if you're not careful with it! It's just for hurtin' muscles in your back and shoulders, and your wife will be long gone tomorrow morning!! It's stinky.

Put ol' Ben on the shelf. Give something called 'Mineral Ice' a try. It works well for me and gives deeeeeeeeep down heat. But ya gotta rub it in good or else its kind of greasy.

Oh my gosh...it's hot today! In the 80's where I live, and just a couple of miles northeast of me where I was just doing some shopping it was in the 90's! It's really pretty with all the flowers in bloom but dang it's too early to be this hot!

I could use a nice cold one right about now.

Hey Herb...how hot is it in Santee today?

It's kind of like the Amityville Horror, but not as scary! Every autumn I see a few ladybugs in the house here and there. By springtime, we've got hundreds of them crawling and flying around in the sunniest and warmest rooms. I've got no idea how they get in or why we have so many come spring.

Well Ali,

I guess it is time to say spring may be here....

We have had some more frost the past couple of evenings, but once them noisy little wrens come back to the yard you can officially say SPRING IS HERE, and their sqawking away as loud as ever :P

How in the heck can a bird that small be that loud :ph43r:

I've set up the birdbath by the feeder again and the trees are in full bloom. Our families of birds spend most of the day coming and going from our back yard and they're some chubby lil' suckers right about now ... I can't stand the blackbirds and crows though and take every opportunity to get rid of them. They invaded yesterday evening and were splashing away in the bath until I slammed the storm door and chased them off. I then checked my neighbors feeder and something caught my eye. It seems like one of the little sparrows liked the birdseed so much, he managed to get inside the feeder. He was having a hizzy-fit because he couldn't figure out how to get out again. I am not sure how he got inside anyway but maybe them big ol' blackbirds had bullied him (being the small guy) and stuffed him in the feeder ... just wait til I catch them!!! Anyway, I went over and let him out for which he will be forever grateful ... yeah right  :o

The fields have been turned and planted here, my daffodils and tulips are in full bloom and Bud is 'falling apart' like an old suit! I've brushed enough winter fur off him to make another dog! The apple trees and lilacs are starting to blossom!
Don't panic Dawg if you've made a friend of the little birds! They have very big hearts!!

A few flowers blossoming - no trees to speak of yet.

A little frost on the ground again this morning.

The day promises to be nice today, and raining tomorrow - oh, well - May showers bring July flowers......hey there is something wrong with that - well that's life up here in da great white nort.

Ali,

Oh yeah, I like my birds ... watching the families grow is great, its like I have some winged grandkids. They get used to us pretty easily and while they don't let us get too close, we can go about our business from 3-4 feet away at times. Its funny to watch the wife planting flowers or weeding below the feeder and to have a few birds land above her head and watch what she's doing

I know what you mean about brushing enough fur off Bud to make another dog. My old dog Charlie was a mixed husky and I went through the same thing with him. But once you made him skinny again, he would run, roll, and enjoy his haircut  :P

I saw the most beautiful cardinal yesterday. It was so bright red! My daffydils have all ready bloomed and are gone now. The roses are greening up getting ready to bloom. We've had so much rain the grass is a mile high. I think we're gonna lose a dog in the back yard if we're not careful.

CW, I thought of you this morning when I saw a little brown wren checking out a new birdhouse I bought last autumn. It's 'cheap' and for 'wrent'! There's a 'pool' (birdbath) close by and a 'fastfood' restaurant (bird feeder) within flying distance! I think I've got the place sold!
The chickadees are 'tame' with me Dawg, but the other birds don't want to know me at all! Even though Bud 'donates' gobs of fur into the wind for their nests!
The best birdseed I've found is at Loews - just their 'wild birdseed mix'. If you want more cardinals Sibs, throw some seed on the lawn or just spread it out on an old board. They seem to like to eat on something flat rather than a feeder. If you put out some jelly, you might get some Orioles!
As far as their singing goes, I like it! I think that everyday is Sunday to a bird and they are raising their voices up to God!

Ali,

I'll try and get some pic's of my bird families ... its awesome and colorful and a source of a great deal of enjoyment. I never thought I would say that but it is!!! Our birdseed is actually from Walmart and is the wild feed without the normal outer covering (not sure what they call it). That way, me AND my birds can spill a ton on the ground below the feeder and nothing grows but all types of birds love it. Right now we've been under some heavy rainy weather for quite some time and are experiencing (besides the occasional tornado) a ton of flooding. I'll get them pictures taken if this rain ever stops ... but then I'm not looking forward to the droughts that I am expecting this summer.
