We got a small dusting of snow yesterday while I was at work at Camp Shelby. I'll post some pictures as soon as I download them. It was funny though because when we get snow--any amount--this far south everything shuts down. Guess yesterday was the exception. |

Well, the mid-winter blues are really starting to set in here at Shiloh. Haven't had but, a few days of above freezing temps here in a while. We are wondering if the Sun is still up there anywhere as it hasn't been visible (except for a glimpse now and then). Still haven't finished cleaning the downed trees from the December Ice Storm. I am finding it harder and harder to motivate myself to go out and get anything done. We are really ready for Spring and still have a month and a half of winter to go. On the upside I have been spending a lot of time at the Pawn Shop (part time employment) wheeling and dealing a few guns and will probably set up at the Grand National Gun and Knife show toward the middle of next month to pass the time  . I don't ever remember a winter quite like this one has been. We usually get some intermittent warm sunny days but, this year they have been few and far between. I think I would like to go to sleep and wake up in, oh about April.

Good glucka bluka ALI!!! That picture of the ice on the windows is confirmation that the only direction I will move in the future is south. I hate ice. I was a young telephone man back in the 70s when an ice storm came thru Virginia. I was 30' up a telephone pole, freezing my buns off and I made a resolution at that time that I would NEVER EVER AGAIN complain about it being too hot!!! Today, decades later, I have kept that resolution. You and Pete be careful with all that ice/snow and don't overdo it!!! Think WARM ...

All we've been getting is freezing rain, a little bit of snow and those wonderful gray skies! The ice scrapper doesn't make a difference to the windshield CW! Only trouble is, you can only leave the truck running with the defroster on for so long - gotta get into town, put what's left of the grocery money into the gas tank and start all over again!! I got myself going on some vitamin D and set my thoughts on what I'll plant this Spring! Here's a photo I took today -![]() |

Actually went ice fishing yesterday before the winds picked up and the temps dropped. Figured the fish would bite a little before the front went thru. WHAT A BLAST! Wasn't hot action, but had some fun, caught a few perch and this story: I have one of the portable Eskimo ice shacks. They are great, accept you need a snowmobile or 4-wheeler to haul them around. One-man-power does not pull a sled that weights well over 200 lbs with gear in it very well or very far on snow covered ice. So pulled the shack as far as I could muster / about a half mile - over near another one. Figured they put that shack there (noone in it BTW) for a reason. Maybe they knew there were fish there. Set up a tip-up and jig poles for pan fish and sat down enjoyed the peace and quiet (DANG- forgot the beer!!!! Coffee will do ) and caught a few perch. After awhile it was getting a little cold with the door open, so zipped it shut. Nice and dark inside now. Thought it would be neat to look down the holes and see what was down there - and HEY - there is a perch trying to eat my minnow! Had a bunch of fun watching perch eat minnows and trying to have the patience to wait until you could not see the minnow anymore before setting the hook. Who needs one of them underwater cameras .After catching one, I put another minnow down and jiggled it around - and all of a sudden a pike zipped thru so fast I couldn't see that it grabbed my minnow, but figured it did cuz it just stopped in its tracks right under the hole. SET THE HOOK!!! YEHAWWW....let the fun begin Well there went the other pole, too. Seems he grabbed that bait on his way thru, too and that was the direction he swam from. I just grabbed that pole with the other hand and broke the line. Now, I'm trying to play this pike up to the hole with the other and lost track of where the gaff hook went. Well here is the pike's mouth and big sharp teeth gaping open out of the hole and no gaff to be found. Pulled just a little harder until his gills were out and grabbed under the gills and pulled it out on the ice. YIPPEEE!! That made up for the darn perch that did the same thing and while I'm trying to figure out how to get the dumb thing unhooked, it did by itself and plopped back in the water  |

I always love to hear about the one that got away CW!! There are a couple of 'tents' set out on the lake down the road and I'm hoping they don't blow away tonight! We finally had some blue sky this morning, but as the day progressed the wind picked up and the snow started to fly! Keep that fire goin' and don't forget to let the faucets drip!! I sure wish other people here would write in about their winter weather - what it's like in other States, and what they do to pass the time. I took this picture today - a little bit of Heaven! ![]() |

Couple of pics, I've been trying to get for yous. This is what happens when the air temp is colder than the water temp of a large body of water. It was about 0 when this was taken - it looks much more severe when the winds blow and it actually starts to make it snow when it hits a large cold area. In other words, if the wind blows hard over the warm water, it warms up the air and is moist, then hits the cold air over land and turns to snow. Lake effect snow: ![]()

Well, we are in the midst of not one, but THREE warnings: Hazardous Weather Outlook Special Weather Statement Winter Storm Warning It is raining to beat all heck right now, and with the ground temps being what they are, it freezes on contact of the surface. In a nutshell, the road is better traveled by ice skates rather than anything else - at least 1/2" of ice on ALL roads. We tried to go to church, but the roads are just too dangerous to drive on. Had to turn around and barely made it back. From here it will only get worse:
Here is the current radar We're just gonna hunker down for the day and get the fireplace up and going. What sucks is the 4WD truck is down and I need to get a $5 part (thermostat) to get it back on the road. Can't get to the Farm and Fleet store to get it Unless we break out them ice skates ![]() |

Beautiful pictures CW! ....but they make me feel colder than I already am! The wind has been blowing all day here bringing us a little bit of everything - snow, sleet, freezing rain. It's suppose to go into the 40's tomorrow, then back into the 20's for the rest of the week. Not so bad, considering what you've got to look forward to! Just remember, this is the kind of weather that will make you happy to clean your rain gutters out in the Spring! Hooray!! |

Spring is in the air here. 74 today, just perfect. It's my favorite time of year. I wish it could just stay this way all the time. CW, I've been meaning to tell you that picture of the lighthouse is beautiful! I've got stupid birds here too. They're stupid mocking birds though. They make noise all night long in a tree about ten feet from my bedroom window. They make me crazy! If they just wouldn't do it all night they'd be pretty cool though. It sounds like a lot of birds in that tree but it's really just a couple or so. Listening to all the different sounds they make would be nice...in the day time! Stupid night birds!

Oh rub it in, LL.... The first 100 feet or so that looks like shoreline going out into the water, is not.....it's ice. I wish I could find some pics of what happens when the ice freezes across a bay and if the wind is so strong, it breaks up all the ice and pushes it up on land.....basically end up with a 50 foot high moving ice glacier. I'll dig through some old pics and see if I can find one. |

These pics were taken way back in early Feb. They are just a little chunk of the whole pic. http://www.nbcsandiego.com/slideshow/news/...173/detail.html I'm planning a bike ride out there this weekend. No, I probably won't take pics. I used to take a lot of pics but was always disappointed in what they show. They never really show the beauty of the landscape. Decided that it would be better to just remember the stuff myself and not saddle my sons with the job of throwing out a bunch of poor pics that have absolutely no meaning to them. |
