The traffic sucks, the taxes suck, the cost of living is sky high, government is a pain in the ###, but having grown up in the mountains of Oregon, the weather is great. I agree with this guy. Diary of a Snow Shoveler > > December 8: 6:00 PM. > It started to snow. The first snow of the season > and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window > watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. > It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like > newlyweds again. I love snow! > > December 9: > We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering > every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! > Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the > best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years, felt like a > boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon > the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the > driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life. > > December 12: > The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor > tells me not to worry,we'll > definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be > awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll > never want to see snow again. I > don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our > neighbor. > > December 14: > Snow, lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped > to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind > took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and > sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and > buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this > much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I > wouldn't huff and puff so. > > December 15: > 20 inches forecast. Herb, nothing could be truer!! We're getting more freezing rain here tonight, and the packed snow on the sidewalk is turning to slush. I'm sitting here wondering if I should go out and shovel it, only to probably wake up to an ice rink tomorrow, or leave it alone so we can get a good 'footing' in the frozen slush .....why would anybody want to think about such a thing?!! But I do! I'm glad for you Almtnman - really, really I am! <_< |

Jeeze folks, I read about the bad weather, snow, ice, flooding and mudslides. in so many parts of the country. Here I am in San Diego county and I was griping about the cold while riding the motorcycle to work this am. Clear skies and 41 degrees at 0630, 6:30 am for you non-military types. It is only going to get up to about 70 deg's for a high. Dang it just won't warm up. I know that SoCal has a lot wrong with it, but the weather ain't part of them. Surfing in the morning and take the grand kids to the snow in the afternoon (Mt Laguna had 8inches of snow between Thursday night and Monday afternoon) from my house the beach is 20 minutes away and Mt Laguna is 40 minutes the other direction. It's days like this that remind me why I stayed here when I retired from the MC. I do feel sorry for those of you without power in the Midwest. I been there done that and it sucks. |

Has anybody heard from GB? I hope him and his family are doing okay. Prayers are going up for them and everybody else affected by the freeze. Ali, I feel for ya...I sure would love to be able to have a White Christmas with my kids and grandkids though....maybe sometime we can all go somewhere for Christmas. |

I haven't heard from GB, but the area he lives, I have noticed on the news that the area there has been without power since the ice storm went through. They are having a lot of problems restoring power due to so much damage of broken poles and lines. I hope that he was prepared for a long power outage and that him and his family are OK. |

We made it through the Ice and now are dealing with snow and cold temperatures. I heard today that 98% of everybody here had their power restored now. We are all OK. I am dealing with a little bit of back pain from hauling all that fuel for generators and cutting and removing all the downed lumber from the ice storm. I didn't get it all but, I figure it will wait for warmer weather as long as I can get in and out. My wife is stranded over at her sisters tonight because she decided she needed to see her niece and nephew to take them their Christmas presents, while she was there it snowed three inches. She is not that experienced in driving on slick roads, so I told her to stay there until morning (It appears she is actually listening to me for once) The 98 Lumina she chose to drive is a pretty good car and has front wheel drive but, in her case I think caution is wise. It is supposed to get back up into the forties tomorrow so it should melt pretty quick and allow for safe passage home. The all wheel drive Kia is sitting in the driveway covered with snow. |

Well, here goes. I'll try to get through this before my sick computer shuts me off. We have a nice sunny day with temps in the 40s today and all of the white stuff pretty much gone. Tomorrow it looks like it is back in the freezer with highs in the 20s (I know that's considered warm where some of ya live) Don't know about any of you, I am ready for April. This winter is just getting started and it looks like a Lu Lu. Funny, I haven't heard much about global warming lately.

Well, we've had pretty much everything you could think of the past few days....rain, fog, thunder, lightning, tornadoes to the south of us, and then on top of it, it finally did what it normally does this year - SNOW. Usually after a low/cold front goes thru, you end up going into the DEEEEEP FREEEEZE But so far, the rest of the week looks fairly mild with several days / chance of snow. I hope it does - all the ground is now left uncovered with all the rain. Just goes to show ya, if you don't like the weather in WI, wait 5 minutes - it'll change  |

Here at Quantico Marine Corps Base we've had pretty nice weather this week. Its been sunny and in the high 60s, low 70s with a touch of rain during the night. I keep telling the newcomers from the north that its still only January and we still have to get thru February before we're out of winter probability. So far my squirrels have never failed me and I believe it will be a very mild winter once again but the northern invaders are wanting to put away winter coats and get out cutoffs and swimsuits.

Back in 1985 I was in Quantico for 6 weeks, last of Jan and Feb. It was COLD, snowed, froze, rained and then did it all over again. I left Cherry Point and it was 75+deg. When I got to Quantico, late that afternoon, it was 27deg. I was on a motorcycle. Dang near froze. |

Herb, I think '85 was one of the years we had a big blizzard here. I think we got like 24" of snow one day and then another 12" of snow the next day. People lost power for up to 7-10 days. This is an area where one year we can have 60 degree winters with no snow, the next year all heck breaks loose. In between the two extremes we have around 10 years of 2 or 3 snowfalls of around 1"-2" and a few ice storms. |

I know that there was snow everywhere. We had snow, then it rained, then it froze, then it snowed again. Snow on top of ice. Couldn't even walk because everything was so slick. I was there for the Staff NCO Academy. You should have seen us trying to have final drill evaluation. After a BUNCH of falls and a sprained wrist on one SSgt, they canceled the evaluation. Final PFT was on snow covered ice and everyone did poorly, at least no one was hurt. That was one lousy time. The only really good thing was that I managed to get to the Smithsonian a number of times. Made the whole thing worthwhile. The school was not hard since I had already done the correspondence course. |

I have. I grew up in the mountains of Oregon. I learned how to install tire chains before I learned to drive. I hate the damn things, that's why I now live in San Diego. On that trip I was riding a motorcycle and while I'm not a rocket scientist, I'm not stupid either. The highways around DC and Northern VA are dangerous enough in good weather, you won't catch me riding a bike there in the snow and ice.

I grew up in the 70's and with half a year of winter, ya come up with some dang stupid ideas of having fun..... Riding your stingray bike around in the snow was a big blast! It was as if that bike fit the weather "terrain" perfect. Another past time was loading up the back seat of your buddy's car with snowballs, bombing around town, and throwing snowballs at your other buddy's....or your not so much buddies... |

Well, in my neck of the woods the "winter weather" consists of a few days in the single digits, followed by two days of 70 degree weather.. followed by a mild cold front coming in behind severe thunder storms and tornadoes. Following the weather forecast, this extreme cold followed by unusually warm temps is going to happen again next week, and that only means one thing: more violent storms. I'm seriously hating the weather, wish it would just get cold and stay cold. |

During my growing up years, 50's/60's, we lived in the country and there wasn't a whole lot to do in the winter. At least that was safe. Put a bunch of kids on an old car hood and pull it with a pickup, hit a bump and kids went everywhere. Got a little older and we bought a dirt motorcycle. let the air out of the tires, wrap dog chain around and around the wheel/tire, bolt the ends of the chain together, air the tires up and go fast until you fall down. Get up and do it again. When you get back from the Doc's office, try to figure out how to rid the bike with the cast on your arm. Tie a rope to the rear shock on the dirt bike and pull kids on anything that will slide on the snow. Do your best to dump the kids off of the "sled". Find the steepest hill around and slide down it with inner tubes, didn't matter that there was a creek at the bottom of the hill, water temp was 30 deg, air temp was 26 degrees and it was a mile walk home in wet clothes after you ended up in the creek. After all the idea was to fall off the tube before you hit the water. OBTW, the creek water melts the cast and it is another trip to the Doc's. Not to mention being grounded for 2 weeks because of the money it cost to redo the cast and the Doc was pissed because he had to do it over. It's a wonder that any of us survived. Yet I don't know of any kids being seriously injured (back then a broken arm didn't count as serious, 12 stitches on the forehead was just an inconvenience). I thought that everyone lived that way. Then I was stationed at Yuma, AZ for a few years. Lord, I found out that you don't have to put up with being cold, wet, and miserable for 6-8 months of the year. I, for one, am looking forward to the global warming. |

You are not the only ones getting snow. Note that this has been glossed over by the US LSM. Northern parts of Saudi Arabia are covered with snow with schools, mosques and administrative bodies paralyzed, local media reported Friday. http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard...gnored-us-media "The Saudi Gazette reported late in December that the winter was expected to last 89 days, with temperatures reaching below zero. National media said the winter is the coldest in the country for 20 years. Hmmm. Coldest in 20 years. I guess that's why our press are disinterested. Think they'd ignore Saudi Arabia if the temperatures were the warmest in 20 years?" |

Great picture Condor. Makes my back hurt though to think about shoveling the driveway    Virginia is under a 'winter storm watch' today and it may be the same front that moved through your place. Nary a flake of snow or sleet thus far but some local school admins are already closing schools. Radio's are announcing the possibility of ... of ... of ... a huge blizzard of possibly 1", followed by rain this afternoon. I'm so durn sick of seeing the panic in this area at the mention of snow. There is so much whining that I feel I'm at a DNC convention!!! 'scuse me, now I gotta go buy toilet paper and bread ..... NOT!!! |
