It seems as though some are into the practice of posting links to other websites and never adding a comment about what it's about, only making a title in the thread title. This is confusing and I don't think what a forum is all about. I can get links by doing searches at Google, but talking about those searches without a comment on what the original post had in mind is mind boggling. Posting links and quotes are well accepted, informative and appreciated, but doing so and not making any kind of comment is not. For one thing when you click on that link not knowing where you're going to next, maybe to a website that has a virus there waiting on you is not good. To post just a link and think the topic title is enough in my opinion is not enough. So if a person posts nothing but a link in the message body and only a topic title with no remarks or what they think, is that enough or do any of you agree with that? I have been thinking about any that are posted that way, to just delete those posts off the forum as they are not debatable topics to begin with. What do you think? |

If I understand this right. There are some that leave you wondering, but there are others that the topic title explains what the link would be about.Like a title of, Trouble in Pakistan or Fire in California. Then others are not even close to giving a clue what the link is about. If you want my opinion (and you did ask) it really makes no difference to me ,if the title line don't peak my interest then I don't go to that thread to start with. Those I go to once I read the link I think I know the persons opinion on the link by who posted it and from there views on past posts. But then again Web sites are just like legislative and judicial branches of our government one legislates the laws the other interrupted them and puts them in effect and enforces them ,in this case you get to be both branches because it's your site and should be how you want it to be. Just my opinion.

I think putting a description of the what we're linking to, and/or the poster's opinion about the topic would be a good idea. |

James, While I believe it is always a good idea to post something concerning a link, it doesn't usually bother me if there is nothing. Sometimes, I get the gist of the link thru the title thread. If I don't know the person posting the link, I don't open it ... for the reasons you brought forth in your question. If I do know the person posting the link, I may or may not go there ... dependent on the title of the thread and if I feel I have the time to spend checking it out. In a nutshell which I should have done in the first place rather than be so long-winded ... With no description, I normally will NOT go there. |

I admit I am the one doing it but just remember I have 10 diagnoses and I am cracked. All jokes aside I am sorry Mr. Almtnman. It's my fault and I take full blame. Thank you for bringing my attention to this. |

TD, basically, I'm the same way, I don't like to look at links when there's no description of what it is or why it was posted. Then I wonder if I didn't check all the links out and somebody got a virus from one of them if they would come back and ask why I didn't check that out. It's an extremely time consuming thing to have to do all that and takes all the fun out of the forum. I spend most of my time checking things and not getting into the forum like I would like and it makes me edgy. To put it another way, it's sort of like I would like to go on a hunting trip but have to wash the pots and pans first.

Sunshine, you are not the only one doing this, so please don't take it personally. There are others that do this. Personally, when I come on a forum I like to discuss things, or find out new information, and exchange ideas. If I want to check out videos or links, then I know how to do this. If the link is a topic that merits discussion, or brings out something that is beneficial to those viewing it, then fine. But I still like to see something written by the sender, giving insight as to why this link or video is being posted. I will not open any links that have nothing written about the link. For reasons already stated. For those that don't care one way or the other, maybe another topic area for posting these links might be considered, with the topic area purged each month to prevent a lot of backlog.? Just a thought...

Almtnman, Carolina Sue's last suggestion really sounds like a cure,Also as far as the virus there is a free virus program called Avast that I have run for about a year and it's saved me several times. search avast for FREE download. My apologies to those offended by my long winded post! |

So true! That does sound like a good suggestion about a topic area just for that, one that I have already tried that didn't seem to work. But I can set up a topic area for links and video links that automatically purges the posts out after however many days we could decide on. The problem right now, when we overload a topic area with a lot of posts, the whole system seems to slow down. I think that's what happens on another forum we're familiar with and they keep theirs down to 100 topics and do a regular purge. |
