The term "redneck" first came into use when coal miners who were fighting to get a union wore red bandannas around their necks. Nascar started because of Prohibition - guys driving real fast to outrun the law when delivering 'hootch'! I wish I had caught the whole program, but it will probably be on again. Billy Ray Cyrus hosted it, and it was pretty interesting. Sometimes I forget what it took to make America such a great place. All the (LEGAL!) immigrants who came here so long ago, taking on back breaking work for small wages. The folks who came and settled in the Appalachians are still a part of all of us today ....hard work and pride! It was a real good show. I hope you can 'catch' it next time it's on! |

Ali, I caught part of the show and you are 100% right on, it is a great show. Its amazing, the prize money for one race today is greater than many race drivers made in their 20-30 year careers of days past. Folks are correct when they say we are a nation of immigrants. We have however changed over the generations ... we have lost 'responsibility'. Either that or we have gained too many libs!!! I still maintain faith that the core of America will rise to the occasion and we will once again return to common sense as a way of life. |

Dang Dawg, I didn't know you was an optimist. All kidding aside, I too have projected a little bit of a negative view of the average American at times but, like you all I still hold out hope that this nation will somehow see the error of the direction that we are headed in and turn about face to the things that are really important. Sad thing is it is probably going to take something pretty catostrophic to do the job. I think maybe I was born about 50 years to late because I sure can relate better to the values of my Grandparents generation than I can , to the ones of my own. |

... Unfortunately we are in agreement about that statement. The question becomes how low do we go before it happens? This lifetime? Our kids lifetime? Only time will tell and hopefully we recover and get back on track before it does happen. Its strange times we live in nowadays!!! |

I think (and I do it quite often) that if more people found belief, truth and contentment in a higher power - whether they be young or old - we would be so much better off. We'll never 'go back', it just won't happen in today's world. As long and hard as I've thought about it, the simplicity in life lies within our hearts with Jesus. It's what the 'backbone' of America was all about, and what it still can be, today. |
