Subject: Bill Frist on Fred Thompson

09:32 PM - April 30, 2007

Issues: Economy · 2008 Elections · Fred Thompson
People are hungry for more information on Fred Thompson. Since I began
blogging about Fred over a month ago I have received hundreds of emails
from conservative Americans asking for more information.

Below is the text from a Fred Thompson commentary on pork barrel
spending from the March 26th ABC News Radio program the Fred Thompson
Report titled "War Funding Puzzlement:"

The text of Fred's commentary:

When I read the House's emergency funding bill for the Iraq war. I was
surprised to find what looked like 25 billion dollars in pure pork. Since a
lot of people who voted for the bill campaigned promising to stop that sort
of thing, I was puzzled.

I'm puzzled there's $283 million for dairy farmers in an emergency war
funding bill. It didn't make any sense at first, but there's also $74
million for peanut farmers. If our soldiers are eating a lot of peanut
butter sandwiches, I suppose, they MIGHT need more milk to wash them down
with.

Hey, I'm trying to keep an open mind.

I wonder too why the bill gives $25 million to spinach producers. Our
troops should certainly eat their vegetables, but unless it turns out that
there's a scientific basis for that Popeye spinach thing, I don't get it.
I'm also trying to figure out what $400 million for rural schools has to
do with the war -- unless that money produces students smart enough to
explain why this bill includes over three hundred thousand dollars for the
widows of two ex-House members, and $80 million for low-income rent
subsidies.

I'd be grateful if anybody could explain the $120 million for the shrimp
industry or the $60 million for the salmon fishing business. I don't think
there's a shrimp cocktail shortage in Iraq, but I'll check on it.

There's a lot in the bill I don't understand, but this sort of makes
sense. There's $50 million for repairs to the plant that supplies
electrical power to the Capitol -- where congress works. To fund and win
the war, congress needs electricity at least to do its job.

But honestly, this bill clearly isn't abut funding the war for democracy
and freedom in Iraq. It's about buying enough votes with pork to embarrass
the administration. Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing, after all, if
Congress did have it's power cut off.

Thank you. Good post. I still think it's too early to make any real decisions, but I do know I've pretty much eliminated two candidates. Don't want McCain and don't want Rudy.

Its disgusting the way the 'lawmakers' add pork to bills. In essence they are stealing from the American people ... I'll vote for this bill for you BUT you have to give me $300million for my pet project that will gain me votes.

This points up the need for 1) line item veto and 2) term limits. Unfortunately, with term limits the politicians will still want full pension.

I've always liked Fred Thompson and especially enjoyed his reply when Michael 'I lie for a living' Moore called him out for a debate. It was a video classic ... unfortunately I was unable to save it and now it has disappeared.

TD, I think Fox has it on their site. I haven't been on their lately - but it was there earlier. Try Hannity's section if it isn't on the main page.

This is a good read - been reading Thompson's writings on ABC radio's site - Here is the link to his site.

I really hope he runs.

hahahahaha I loved this quote ...

Quote:

No matter how much lipstick Washington tries to slap onto this legislative pig, it’s not going to win any beauty contests. In fact, given Congress’s track record, the bill will probably get a lot uglier -- at least from the public’s point of view. And agreeing to policies before actually seeing what the policies are is a heck of a way to do business.

Fred Thompson on the U.N.

I'm never particularly surprised when the United Nations seems to oppose human freedom rather than promote it. At least a third of its member nations aren't democratic themselves. Many that claim to be, are only barely so.

An organization that treats democracies and dictators equally cannot be expected to be a pure force for good. When Fidel Castro and Kim Jong Il have as much say in U.N. matters as the entire populations of Poland and New Zealand, you're going to have problems.

One was the Oil-for-Food scandal. We ought to remember that the U.N. let Saddam steal tens of billions of dollars -- money meant to be spent on food and medicine for his own people. Much of that money was used to pay off U.N. officials and buy support for Saddam's regime.

Still, people keep telling me that the U.N. is a force for good -- and I'd like to believe it. The world could use an organization capable of dealing with international problems like slavery. According to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, an estimated 600,000 to 800,000 people are sold across national borders annually. More are enslaved within nations. Most are women; about half are children, and the majority are sexually abused.

That's why accusations made by former U.S. ambassador John Miller are so disturbing. Miller accuses the United Nations of promoting human trafficking by failing to punish U.N. officials and peacekeepers who have engaged in the trade.

Often, the offenders trade U.N. food and aid to desperate people for personal gain. Such incidents and the weak response to them, Miller says, cripple U.N. efforts to end human trafficking.

U.N. officials disagree, of course. They say they've instituted reforms; but we've heard this sort of thing for over fifty years. I didn't see many resignations or firings over Oil-for-Food, so I think I'll wait for some evidence.

... a quote from Fred Thompson

Quote:

After two years in Washington, I often long for the realism and sincerity of Hollywood.

Fred Thompson, Speech before the Commonwealth Club of California

I read that Thompson has 'given notice' at Law & Order that he will not be returning. The pieces necessary for his run for the Presidency are all falling in place.

Just a thought, the current republicans and administration feel that THEY know what is best for America and that they KNOW what americans want. They say this while they pander to the democrats and ignore 75%-80% of America who want the borders closed and illegal immigrants deported. Wouldn't it be ironic for America to turn out at the voting booth and vote INTO OFFICE a slate of Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter, both of whom the current front runners or media give no credibility. I believe this slate would compliment each other and give a strong and balanced team to run this country. At 6'7" tall, Mr Thompson would also be quite imposing when dealing with that little midget from Iran.
