What the heck is wrong with some people?! Those kids were afraid for their lives! That's a horrible stunt to pull on anybody, no less 11 year old kids! Besides, it's the adults who need to know how to react in a situation like that, in order to protect the kids. Those kids were away from home and terrorized by their own teachers. I think they should be fired! |

I cannot believe that. What were they thinking? The quality of teachers today really scares me.

This will definitely bear watching to see if any of these foolish adults are held accountable.

Gone are the days when you send your kid off to school knowing that they will be learning, having fun and feeling safe. I don't know - I couldn't imagine - that any of those teachers wanted to 'hurt' any one of those kids. I'm sure that lots of teachers don't feel that school is such a happy time either anymore. It was a stupid thing that they did. It sure would be nice if we could put our head's together and find solutions. |

I'm not sure that this was a bad idea. These types of shootings are becoming more common and the kids and teachers need to know what to do. I remember the stupid nuke attack drills we did when I was in grade school (50's). So there is a precedence for this this type of drill. Was it a good idea to tell them it wasn't a drill? Maybe and maybe not. I know that when I was a kid a fire drill was just a chance to goof off. I knew it was a drill so I didn't take it seriously. This article says nothing about what was LEARNED from the experience. Let me expound on the reasons for having this type of drill. 4 of my granddaughters go to a school that had a bomb threat the other day. As far as I'm concerned the school staff screwed up big time in the handling of it. First of all a note was found just as the students were arriving so they held them at the front gate area. The note didn't say where the bomb was and the holding area was between different buildings, the kids were in the middle of this area and were less than 20 feet from the buildings. Not a safe place if the bomb had been in one of those buildings. 2nd, the staff did not tell the parents or kids what was happening. The school sits in a kind of cul-de-sac and yet the staff didn't send anyone up the road to stop traffic from entering. They were allowing buses and parents to pull up and drop kids off less than 50ft from the school buildings. My wife was dropping the girls off and one of the teachers told her on the sly. My wife loaded the girls back up and went home. 3rd, the staff had the kids all herded together out in the open with no cover if the real object had been to get them out to where the nut could shoot people. There is a city park across the school parking lot with a corner away from roads and with trees and large rocks. That is where they should have been taken. If this had been a real bomb or a shooter, the loss of life could have been horrible. The mistakes made by the staff endangered many lives and the reason was that no one has trained them in correct reactions to the situation. I think that anyone with responsibility for others should be trained in emergency response. Drills should be held to train everyone in correct actions to take. The drills should be as realistic as possible. I would rather that the kids be informed able to make good decisions if something were to happen than go along in a bubble thinking every thing is hunky-dory. How many people might have lived at VT if they had been trained early on about how to evacuate in the event of an attack? We sat down with the kids and explained what was done wrong and what should have been done. We talked to them about what they should do if there is shooting. I am a believer in being prepared. If you are prepared for the worst you can expect the best. |
