WASHINGTON - Fred Thompson thinks there isn't enough "star" power in the GOP presidential field, so the professional actor and former Tennessee senator is considering getting into the 2008 race. Thompson, who plays district attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's drama "Law & Order," said Sunday that he's going to "leave the door open" and make a decision in the coming months. "I'm going to wait and see what happens," Thompson said. "I want to see my colleagues on the campaign trial, what they say, what they emphasize, whether they can carry the ball next November." "I think people are somewhat disillusioned. A lot of people are cynical out there. They're looking for something different," he said. Thompson, 64, said he was pondering a run after former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker and other Tennessee Republicans began drumming up support for his possible GOP candidacy, citing his conservative credentials. On the issues, Thompson said he: * Is "pro-life," and believes federal judges should overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision as "bad law and bad medical science." * Opposes gay marriage, but would let states decide whether to allow civil unions. "Marriage is between a man and a woman, and judges shouldn't be allowed to change that." * Opposes gun control, and praised last week's 2-1 federal appeals decision overturning a long-standing handgun ban. "The court basically said the Constitution means what it says." * Supports President Bush's decision to increase troops in Iraq. "Wars are full of mistakes. You rectify them. I think we are doing that now," he said. "We've got to give it a chance to work." * Would pardon former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's conviction for perjury and obstruction of justice now, rather than waiting until all his appeals are exhausted. Libby is "bearing the political brunt of something that should've never come about," Thompson said, noting that "practically every witness at trial had inconsistent statements." Thompson said he was not setting a deadline to make a decision and believes he won't be at a disadvantage if he waited until summer. "The lay of the land will be different in a couple of months than it is today, one way or another," he said. Thompson, the minority counsel in the Watergate investigation, was elected to the Senate in 1994 to fill the unexpired term of Vice President Al Gore. He was chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee and left the Senate in 2003 to resume his acting career. Thompson has acted in films such as "The Hunt for Red October," "Cape Fear," and "In the Line of Fire." He was interviewed on "Fox News Sunday." |

I've always thought of Fred Thompson as a presidential candidate. Without delving further at this time, I believe he would get my vote and support. I hope he decides to run

He may be our raising star! It looks pretty grim so far. One thing is for sure. If we don't get someone we can gather behind, the Clinton political machine will win the day. I like his view on the Scooter Libby trail and conviction. It was nothing more than a liberal witch hunt taken to the final degree. He was convicted for lying about something that he should have lied about by law, but didn't - in theory. If he knew that Plame was a covert agent (which she wasn't), he was obligated to lie about her status by law. Since he didn't lie about her status but did lie about not lieing about her status, he was convicted. Getting beyond the whole Bill Clinton support when he lied, it was still completely bogus. That was probably the most useless and politically driven miss-carriage of justice in the history of mankind and anyone involved in it should be burned at the stake for heresey. |

I've always liked Fred Thompson and he would make the best candidate that I could think of at the moment. If he does choose to run, he will have mine and my families vote. I remember seeing him on some of the Senate panels and liked the way he did things then. |

I think I'd like for him to join the race for the next president of the U.S.A. We need a fiscal and moral conservative very very badly. Thanks for the good topic, Duke |

I don't really know a whole lot about him, but what I do know, I like more than what we've got as the supposed front runners right now. |

I guess it is my turn to weigh in on Fred Thompson. I know very little but, judging from what he said concerning the the abolished ban on guns in D.C. and his stand on Roe Vs wade, He sounds like someone I could get behind. I know there are more that these two issues and I would want to know what his religious affiliation is if any among other things but, I think if he is going to get in he needs to now and Rush, Hannity, O'Rielly and Beck really need to go to bat for him. I think he is making a mistake to wait to long to announce |

Hey TD, I just went there to check him out and post the link and you beat me to it! But, yeah, they have him as a moderate populist conservative, slightly right of center. As far as immigration and free trade goes he looks like more of the same as we have right now. (not sure what they mean by "populist") It's still early here, I need more

While all of these are good reasons for voting for Fred Thompson the best reason of all is: Not only does Fred Thompson cut taxes, he cuts tax collectors. The IRS has never been downsized but the military has been. Hello, I'm from the government and I'm here to help you. |

Being a little more moderate and just to the right might just be what it will take to garner enough votes to win. Gualani is more of a lefty to me, he believes in all the liberals stances. McCain, I've always thought of him as a Democrat that calls himself a Republican to gain votes and have never really liked some of the things he stood for. With Fred Thompson now if he enters the race, he just might pull it off. This might have been what we have been waiting on. I would like to know more about him though. But as it is right now, he's the first one that has thought about running that would get my vote as of this minute. |

How about a Tancredo/Thompson ticket. I believe Thompson has more experience but the who-runs-where can be decided by them. I believe it could be a winner???

Now you're talkin! Thompson has more name recognition....I think because of Law and Order, but I really like Tancredo's stand on the issues better. I think that would be a great ticket with Tancredo first.
