I finally get home at 3AM from helping someone out. I walk into a blast furnace! It seems my furnace has forgotten to shut itself off when reaching the set temperature. Tried turning on the AC and the air coming out of the vents is even hotter than before. Tried turning the thermostat off and the blasted thing is STILL running, blowing out hot air. I have shut off the breakers to the furnace and thrown open the windows and the doors. No sense in me trying to get some needed sleep now... still to bloody hot in here.

Could be worse. I woke up at 03:00 in the house in Canada with fumes permeating the house. Opened all of the windows and shut down the furnace. Called the company that maintained it and they got someone out right away. They take heating systems very seriously up there! It was a defective safety that allowed the heating oil to half combust. They lose about three families a year from that up there.

Hick, be careful. My Grandma had a gravity furnace that had a pull chain to turn it on and off. When she was out of town someone left it on and it got so hot it melted all the candles in the house and blistered the varnish on the woodwork. Was very close to catching the whole house on fire. Good thing you got home when you did!! Take Care.

Well, they came out and replaced the thermostat. Even though it is an electric furnace, it was about 135 to 140 degrees in the place. These apartments were built in the late 70's and I know for a fact that the original furnace is still up there in the attic. If it haoppens again, they are either going to have to replace all the relays in the thing(if they still make them), or replace the entire furnace.
