We used to live in an old home built in 1835, until the DOT took it for Eminent Domain to build a road. They had archieologists come and dig up our land before they 'took' it - looking for old relics of the past - as if the house wasn't good enough (or our plans for our live's weren't good enough!) They found the old privy to the house....and when their funds ran out and they had to leave, I continued digging. Well, I've still got an extra key to a house that no longer exists, and a whole lot of history! Bottles, jugs, buttons and ink wells! Not worth nothin' to nobody but me. But it was the best time I ever had - digging in that old privy - coming out with an unbroken bottle or crock! I don't remember how I met him, but he's an awful nice guy - his name is Frank Pandozzi, and he has a TV show (where you can get it) called "Exploring History's Treasures". He also has a website - www.metal-detecting-ghost-towns-of-the-east.com For any of you that dig for history, I think you might enjoy it! |

I have found many old hunters cabins up in the high country while hunting. Beside gold panning and looking for lost Spanish treasure (an expedition of Cortez was wiped out in the valley heading over the mountains trying to escape from the Ute Indians with a load of gold but the 5 survivors came back with no gold. The stories start there and get very interesting from there but lots of clues in the old writing that were compiled in some old books I found. Also going to be checking out some of the old 1800 era mining clams that I also found in a old book) via the back of a horse I also want to get a simi portable detector to use when I run across these cabins. I have to be careful as most of them are on federal land (National forest) but I would only be looking for a coin or two or maybe some nail if I ever did find anything big I would have to say something. PLUS there is still a lot of gold left up in the high country not many venture up there any more

Thar's gold in them thar hills!! My Mom is still fascinated by the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine! She's 83 this year, and still determined to find it! When she was a young woman she visited Arizona and fell in love with it. She brought back a rock (that still sits in her room) and swears there's a gold nugget inside of it!! bsb - don't be surprised if you have some gold in your attic!! Did you ever watch Antiques Road Show?!! |

Yes ! There is gold in them thar Hills. Expecially in My hills! I live right in the Heart fo the Calif Mother Load. Not to far from where Captn Sutter discovered Gold back in 1852. I am an old Gold panner from way Back. Many Many hours bent over that ole Gold Pan! Also have done a lot of dredging. We had 3 gold dredges at one time. A 2", a 3" and a 4". I sitll have the little 2" hanging in my garage. Haven't had it out in quite few yrs. At one time back in the late 1850's and 60's our little Berg which is now a population of 100 or so, had a population of over 10,000 Chinese miners. There are a few hard rock mines around here, but mostly placer mining. Those Chinese were some sharp folks. They got more gold from the White Mans tailings than he took out of the original mine itself! The Chinese had it pretty rough tho. The white man was always robbing him of his gold. So , the Chinese would bury their gold, and once a month all band together and take it to Sacramento to sell it! There is more gold in the ground around here on purpose than by mistake. Periodocally the miners and robbers would kill off a group of Chinese. Of course most of the time they hadn't taken their gold to Sacramento, so there cash of gold is still burried around here in places. I have even found gold in my own driveway, but its only color and is too small to bother with! An interestion story if you want to hear it...Mosts rivers in the Calif gold country run west and drain into the Pacific ocean. During the winter rains, microscopic gold is washed down the Ocean. Most of the oceans sand is just typical white sand, but it also contains Black sand which is Iron. For some chemical reason the microscopic gold attaches itself to the black sand. On the beaches along the calif coast you periodically while walking along the beaches, you will see streaks and layers of black sand. That black sand also contains gold. Well! Back during the Great Depression, anyone who knew anything about mining knew the black sand contained Gold. The beaches of San Francisco had a lot of black sand that came and went with the tide. So Miners bult large sluce box's powered with ole wash machine motors etc, And they would sluce the sand on the SF beaches for the gold. They didn't get rich, but they could make a dollar a day on the average. But during the Depression, a dollar a day at least put food on the table. Quite interesting HUH? During our mining and dredging, we would save our black sand that we would clean out of our dredges and save it! At the end of the summer we would take it down to San Francisco and sell it to the refineries for $2 a pound. Besides Gold, black sand contains precious metals. Amoung them is Platinum which they would chemically remove from the black sand! We would have maybe 40 or 50 pnds of black sand after a summers dredging. At least it would pay for our gas for the summer running our dredges! There is a creek near us that I have panned and got a little gold out of. It is a famous for a 90 pound nugget that was found in it back in the late 1800's mining era! I must take my gold pan in hand some day and head for the creek! I haven't done any panning in years and its about time! I also have a good metel detecter, but haven't used it in years either. Thats one reason why I moved up here to Gold country, but am getting too damn lazy with this darn computer era! Ole swanJ had a bad habit, when finding a gold nugget and not having a jar with Him to put it in. He would put it in his mouth until he got to his jar to put it in. Well! One day, my partner made me laugh over something, and ole swanJ swallowed that damn nugget! And, I'll tell You! I wasn't about to looking for it either! My friends have never let me live that one down either!!!Ta Ta.. End of my gold stories from the foothills of the Calif Sierra Nevada Mother Load ! swanJ |
