I really like Sushi, at least some of it. Don't like the Octapus but the Tuna, Salmon and many others are great. There is a restaurant here called Todai's that has the best Sushi and many other kinds of food. O'course There are very few foods that I don't like.

I LOVE sushi! MAN it's great! Honestly I could eat it 2 times a week it's so good. IF the sushi is done right by a certified chief you will not even taste the fish. A little light Soy sauce some Ginger and some WOSABI YEA baby!!

Herb, I love Todai! I only eat the cooked sushi though...you know , California rolls, spicy for me. I love the Philadelphia rolls with the smoked salmon and cream cheese...yum..(I know it's just lightly smoked, but I tell myself it's cooked  ! I just went there for my last birthday. If you go with 3 (I think it's 3) paying adults you get to eat free on your birthday. Great deal!

You can all have my share of Sushi. It is nasty but not everyone has the same tastebuds. Have you ever tried Rocky Mtn Oysters ? The first time someone asked me if I wanted so I said yes . After they told me what they were I changed my mind. I thought Rocky Mtn Oysters were regular oysters but they are not. |

I've found that finding new foods to enjoy has been a lot of what life is all about. You can't control much in life. You can mostly control what you eat and drink. I love some true Mexican food, but don't care for Mole and can't stand kidney tacos, I found little to like while in Ukraine, but there are good things to eat that came from Ukraine, there was little in the way of cusine in Bolivia, but the saltanas were pretty good. I thought I would like everything German, but found to my surprise that there were things there that I didn't like. Love vietnamese Pho, can't seem to cook it! No Pho shops in this area either! Don't make the joke about "Ain't Pho shops where you get tackle to catch sushi?" |

Yeah, I tried them. I was 12 or 13 and was helping a friend and his dad with butchering hogs. Big George said he had saved some rocky mtn oysters especially for me. I didn't have a clue what he was talking about but wasn't about to admit it. After I had eaten them he explained what it was, almost lost my breakfast. After I got over the initial reaction I had to admit that it wasn't too bad. It did teach me that you can eat a lot of different things. I have never been adverse to trying new things, food or otherwise. Some are good experiences, some aren't. At least I know for sure.

I love sushi! Also love the adventure of food and will try most things, but Boudin (clotted blood sausage) turns my stomach at the thought. I had to eat that once when I was a guest of some French down in St. Barts. I did to be polite, in bites the size of a gnat. It didn't taste bad, but the thought of it!!! ICK!!!!! |

I try to stay away from organ meats and blood based stuff too. I loved hogs head cheese or souse before I watched a cajun neighbor make some and realized that it really was a hogs head. I had always thought it was just a very weird cheese. That was about 1956 when I discovered the truth and I haven't had any since. Pickled pigs feet was an early favorite as well until I finally realized that the feet actually came from a real animal. I used to go to the market in Kiev on the weekends and they are really strong on drinking vodka (vudka!) and cutting off chuncks of smokes and (I hope) cooked sausage to eat with it. Sometimes they would have grilled chicken and those were the better days. I tried to look like I enjoyed everything because most of the people in the markets were friends and not wealthy. They were sharing what they had and doing so generously, I couldn't do less than to enjoy it. They also snacked on something they called salo. I had been warned about that and would not share that. It was the belly part of the pig, all skined and rolled up tight and RAW - with little pink veins showing. Raw bacon! They also served raw pork fat in restaurants mixed with garlic andd various other things on the same little dish as the butter. Had to be pretty careful there, because you couldn't always tell the difference by appearence. I always loved polish sausage and was looking to trying some real polish sausage when we got to Kiev as Poland was the neighbor. I had a visiting collegue who was stopping in Warsaw buy and bring me a selection of polish sausage. It was nothing like what we call polish sausage here. Looked the same, but not nearly as good - to my taste at any rate. I could never figure out if we have the best food in the world here in the good ole USA or whether it is just to our taste, but I like it! |

It takes knowing what good food should taste like to be a good cook, too! Linda, the best food for the brain is... C-H-O-C-O-L-A-T-E!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dark, preferably, but milk if you must. Have a piece with coffee that's supposed to help prevent Alzheimers. I've been getting into gourmet teas, too, because they keep finding more and more things in tea that are good for us and help us to live long lives and I like the way it tastes. Tea helps to keep the weight down, too, as long as we don't have too many crumpets with it. Here's one place I like to shop, because they have tea from all over the world and sell large sized samples. http://www.uptea.com There are others, which I forget offhand, but grocery stores have good selections, now, too. |

We go about once a week to a place called Unclaimed Baggage. One of the things we look for there is exotic teas. We find some good ones. Stuff that people from other parts of the world select as the best from there and think enough of to pack and travel with. The airlines lose their baggage and we buy the tea. Got lots of very good ones. Real turkish coffee with cardaman too! Grewat place to shop. Treasure hunting trip at Unclaimed Baggage on tap for tomorrow. You kids behave in the sand box while I'm gone, y'hear! |

We don't have any place like that to shop around here, Condor, that sounds really great! But we do have the internet and our grocery store has been carrying a wide variety of brands, too. Here are some links to the health benefits of chocolate, coffee and tea, if anyone is interested. This doesn't even include all the herbal teas. I got it backwards on the milk chocolate, that's the brain food! Don't eat too much, though. hehe Milk Chocolate and Brain Power http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200605/s1647287.htm Dark Chocolate lowers Blood Pressure http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4371867.stm Chocolate Milk Could Be Key To Longer, Healthier Life (muscle strength) http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/...60302091856.htm Coffee Perks http://www.forbes.com/health/2005/10/11/co...012feat_ls.html Health Benefits of Tea http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5281046.stm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_benefits_of_tea |

I don't care for sushi because I really really don't lke seaweed and it seems to overpower everything else. While in Japan I had sashimi quite a few times and while I thought I wouldn't like it I liked it better than the sushi. The one thing I absolutely detested was sea urchin. I was told it is an aquired taste and if I had it a few times I would like it. I tried it twice and decided that was enough for me. We had eel tempura and I thought it tasted a lot like catfish. |

BeachRoses, what diet are they pushing with no fruit in it? I must be way out of the loop on diets ![]() We fix whole foods, very rarely will you find a processed mix of any kind at my house. Ever see what comes out of a kid that has eater Boo Berries cereal? Not trying to be gross, but it aint natural!! We typically cook dinner six nights of the week from scratch, altho I've found an organic spaghetti sauce I really like and have been using that lately. Football season does bring with it some junk foods while watching the game. We use real butter in our house and no we're not obese. My Sibs and Mom used to make fun of me cause I always served two vegetables at dinner. Never understood that. Got to offer choices. That's not to say I don't love a cheeseburger and fries or chili cheese fries once in a while. Ever tried a chili cheese kraut dog? Now that's good eating. Tonight is pizza night and my body will be feeling the abuse tomorrow, but it will be reallll good tonight!

It's those high protein low carb diets who ban fruit in the beginning. They say the sugar in fruit spikes your glucose levels. I think it's better to eat a healthy diet of real food and exercise, stay off the aspartame and Krispy Kremes in the office and have a banana, instead.

This is the only type of diet that works for me. No thyroid. Can't break down carbs right. I don't understand it, but it works. After I lost my thryroid and before they could give a thyroid replacement drug, I gained alot of weight and had no energy. I tried the low fat-high carb diets a zillion times with no luck - usually gained. Very discouraging. Finally last year, I read an article on the internet about the carb issue and ordered a book - sure enough that was the issue - Tried the Atkin's diet, it worked. It is funny though, I am not a fruit eater usually (or ever) - but when on Atkin's - that's what I want. You can have fruit on South Beach and Suzanne Sommers high protein diets, but not Atkins in the first two months. Now I have to snack on beef jerky instead of a banana....

bsb, As far as diets go, I think the Atkins is the best one for me. I'm like you though, I don't eat much fruit, but just tell me I can't have it and that's what I want! <_< I've read Dr. Atkins book starting way back in the 80's. Back then it used to be referred to as the drinking man's diet because you could drink hard alcohol on it. I have also heard it called the rich man's diet because you could eat steak and lobster and all those rich foods that do cost more than my favorite food of all time...PASTA!!! In the book he explains how carbs stimulate the pancreas to release insulin and we (not everybody) become insulin resistant and the insulin floats around in our blood stream it causes all those nasty health problems like type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc..., not to mention the weight gain part of it of course. These days are the best days to be on that diet because of all the low carb products on the market. They didn't have those until the last couple of years. They even have PASTA made by Dreamfields that tastes so good, you can't tell the difference from regular pasta. Now if I could just talk myself into getting on it again... ...but wait, it's Christmas time......okay, it'll be my New Year's Resolution!!! |

It truly is the rich man's diet - I'll tell you....It costs alot to eat this way. I complain about that all the time. Plus you have to eat more cause there is no bread to fill you up. I am not a brown bagger for lunch, but with this diet - there is no choice!! It would cost me a fortune to fill up in the lunch room at work. Can I have Chicken Salad Club - no bread or tomatos please???? Meat ball Hoagie - no bun little sauce???? and my favorite - Can I have the Salsbury steak dinner - no potatoes or beets please??? Same price - not as much FILL!!!! Plus a banana is much cheaper than a bag of beef jerky!!!! Thanks for the info on why it works - I skipped that part of the book!
