to me, working with horses is basically the same as any other animal or human for that matter...it's about getting what you give...trust is a huge factor as well as respect...the bond we share with the animals determines the level of trust, respect and love they give in return....

Darcie

You pretty much covered it all. I couldn't have said it better.

This is a BLM collection site!!

they do this on the coast here...they round up wild horses from an island on the outer banks i believe...i have been wanting to go check that out...sounds like a much better program than the sale barns...it's so hard going to those auctions & knowing what those horses go through!  you wanna take 'em all home with you!  wish i had the time...maybe in 30 years when i get to retire!

I'll tell you my family are ranchers!  And their horses LOVE to work.  You can see the smile on their face when they are out and about working cattle.  Heck they even like being around the dogs that are working the cattle.  NOW none of my cousins have a mustang but they have spent 6-10000 on their quarter horse and I believe bias so I weight their option.

yeah, i don't really like the word "work" because to me it carries a negative connotation and when it comes to animals, some people don't understand that concept...they think it's cruelty, but in reality the animal lives for it!  especially when they have that bond with their "owner" and the other animals they "work" with...our border collie would go bazurk if he didn't get to "work" his sheep everyday!

I plan to spent a descent amount of time riding in the high country!  They will be a part of the family but they will also be working.  Not doing cattle but riding.  There is a lot of gold left in the mountain near where I live and to be honest I plan to do a lot of  treasure hunting in the high country as there is a lot of stories and documents about the Spanish treasure that Cortez did not get out of the valley due to his men being killed by the Ute.  So I'll be spending a lot of time in the mountains panning and looking and scouting for elk and bear and deer.

NO FAIR!!!!  that sounds like such fun...where do i sign up?!

Great idea about the grooming!!  I was even leery when I started that but your right it helps a lot in the whole trust arena!!

That round up is on Assateague Island off the coast of VA. There are some wild horses roaming around the Outer Banks, you usually have to head north until the road stops in Corolla, then 4WD or ride it the rest of the way on sand to see any. There are small towns up there, too, but no roads. Make sure you put some big tires on or bring your own horse. It's okay if they're short, not much snow.

We live on the OBX. Moved here from the mountains and love it.

They round them up on Assateague Island, then swim them across the bay channel to Chincoteague for the auction. I've never gone, but would love to, someday. Some say they are survivors of a 16th century Spanish shipwreck off the coast.

i wanna go!!! maybe next year...i wonder how they do being removed from their natural environment though...they've spent centuries adapting to the coast...hmmmm...

says they used to do a sheep round up as well...wonder if they still do that?

my other dream horse is a florida cracker...they're another breed introduced by the spaniards in the 1500's...they were used to work cattle...they're smaller in size and have an incredibly smooth gaite....they're a rare breed now and not as easy to come by...i also wonder how they would adapt to a colder climate....had a friend bring some cattle up from florida and he lost quite a few of them because of the change in climate...

roses,

i've been in NC since '99 but don't make it to the coast much....we went down to Oak Island last year and i just loved it....having grown up close to the ocean, i kinda miss it, but i appreciate it so much more now when i get to go...i lived about a mile from the beach in FL, but rarely went...just got kinda complacent about it...saw it everday so it was no big deal...and nevermind the fact that going to the beach meant having to deal with lots of tourists...i prefer the more natural, out of the way places...from what i hear, the outer banks sounds right up my alley!

my step-daughter goes to UNC Wilmington so we'll go there every now and then (not overly impressive to me, just too much big city)...went to New Bern & Washington a few weeks ago...LOVED those towns!!! So much history!!!

You ain't had some really smooth shine until you have some that has been made for three generations in West Virginia. I had 3 shots and woke up at 3pm on Sunday afternoon. Really smooth stuff and it has a helluva kick to it!

West Virginia is some beautiful country, Hick!

Well, Charlie wiped the Soap Box clean and started a new one, but I didn't see what the topic was. It was down when I went back to look, no reply, AlMtnMan.

Guess I've procrastinated enough on this Christmas shopping for one day, better get busy and get my mother in law something, shipping deadlines approach and I am clueless at the moment. I got them a computer last year and they are afraid to use it. Good choice. Maybe a sweater...

I would occassionally buy a mason jar of smooooooooooth shine from an older black man who also lived in Spotsylvania VA. It was really good and really smooth ... as Hick describes that is also the dangerous kind   It tastes so good you don't realize its sneakin' up on you and waitin' to pounce!!!

Beachroses,

I just checked CDB and it hasn't been wiped again. They may have had the site down for maintenance or server problems.

Laurie, it wasn't always like that. Since this new format, both used to used to stay intact for the year and at the start of the new year Broose erased the previous year's responses and left the Soapbox there. You could look at each years soapbox right there. In September, he started to archive the soapbox and deleting the reponses with the start of each new soapbox. We were able to look at old soapboxes on that same page as where the soapbox, message board and member count is - not having to go back to the Main web site. He did do a wipe out there too once.....but, as an example, the Mexican standoff was up to about 12 pages and there for at least three months......

It may have been august......that the changes occurred.....

Hey Dawg, I caught it when he was taking off number nine on health and putting number ten on Muslims on there, last night. AlMtnMan asked him on the thread if he ever reads the posts and he didn't reply, because I saw it about a minute before he took it all off. That's what I was talking about. <_<

That's the way I remember it too as I have posted to several differnt Soapbox articles and got notifications on new posts that were made to some of the older ones. Now, according to what I heard, he deletes all the responses and posts a new article on Tuesday's and Friday's. When the new article is posted by him, then all the replies from the previous article is deleted and no-one can reply like they used to in that article.

I'm not even sure if he even reads what people have to say.

Maybe they have a storage problem with the type forum they use. I checked to see how our forum is allotted for posts and it has no limit on the number of posts or the number of members.

Bsb and Almnt,,,,I had forgotten that the new format took place several months ago.,, Well it's been some amount of time now that the Soapboxes are archived and nope the comments aren't saved. I do suppose he sometimes reads through the comments as it is his site. Actually it makes sense to me he wouldn't get involved in all the comments back/forth as he's already said his peice and is a very busy person.

Hey MeanGene, you remember you promised to teach me about horses when I retire! Gonna start with the pygmies and work up to the full size. That could be coming sooner than later, don't know about the company I'm working for right now, plus the last one is graduating from highschool this year so we'll be kinda free to do what we want and move wherever we want!!!! Anyway, I have a question. If I get enough land can I keep wild horses to run free as well as tame ones to ride or will they confuse each other? Might be a stupid question, but........ :)

I would suggest don't mix wild horses with tame ones. The tame horses will pick up habits from the wild ones. Unless the wild horses can be handled it would not be a good idea.

P.S. If you are afraid of getting thrown, get a pony. That way if the pony starts bucking you can stand up and let it run out from under you and all is well. No broken bones or concussions. :D :D

I might look funny on a pony but I would rather have a pony ( me and my long legs touching the ground ) Now that is funny. We have a friend that lives really close and he was in the Marine Corps. He is older than Rick. He was also a police officer. I told him that I was walking a miniture pony on a lead around and I went up to the restaurant because everyone wanted to see it and I told everyone that Dave and his wife ride this pony double . He about had a cow and got all upset and said now you will really have people talking . A couple months later I went to his house and brought the story up and he just laughed. It was funny. 2 people riding double on a minature pony. :garfield: :rotfl: :thatfunny:

In this town everyone knows everyone. God only knows what they say about me . I don't mind because it gives someone else a break and plus I know I am crazy. :banana-man:

It's not a sticky that I'm aware of, I just hit the reply button and it worked. I wish I hadn't said anything, frankly... I couldn't figure out why he would do that, when his Christmas Soap Box topic was going so nicely with libs and conservs wishing each other a merry one and all. Another soldier from Iraq even showed up on there.
