Hi All.. As probably some of you know, My 35 yr old Son joined the Army last march. He is a pretty sharp computer tech. But , being self employed with small computer repair business, sometimes financially, it a rough go! So, he decided to join the Army. My wife and I were very disappointed when He made that decision, especially at his age! But he is a grown Man and will make his own decisions. Upon joining, his hopes were to get into the computer end of the Military. But, they told Him that the computer tech end was pretty well filled up, so His second choice was the Motor Pool, and driving truck. He wants to make a career of it, but I thought what a Hell of a career to pick! So, anyway! He went thru Boot and trained to drive truck, etc. After getting out of boot, he came home for a few weeks, and was then transferred to Hawaii, and of course he took his family with! So, that woa good anyway! He has a Cell phone, so he calls home every other day or so, and even helps me with puter problems via e-mail, etc. So its as if He is only a few miles away, rather than 2500 miles, which mkes it nice. Ohh! This age in technoligy HUH! Well, he called the other day, and said , Guess what?? My head Sergeant discovered the other day, that I was a certified computer Tech, and is trying to get me transferred ovet to the computer division, and it looks as it may be a go! But , the Sergeant also told him, that if a qualified Army trained computer tech comes in to the division, that he could possibly get bumped back to the Motor Pool. But, he is a very Smart Kid, and I'm sure he will pick up on the Armys computer way in a short time, so I'm hoping that he is allowed to stay and have the Army career that He originally wanted! He is pretty sure He will be shipped out on a tour of duty in March or April, whether it be as a computer tech, or a truck driver. And , it doesn't really bother Him in the least, as to where they send Him! Iraq, or any other place. I know a lot of parents that have Sons and Daughters over in a Warring country, for fear of that dreaded phone call some day! But, I am not really bothered that much! All of the 19 years that we raised Him, expecially in his later teens when He had a Car or motorcycle, The wife and I could have had a Police or Sheriffs car pull up in our driveway at any time and tell us that he was involved in a Fatal car crash, or something! Sure, I would worry slightly about Him being over in a country involved in a War! But worry only makes you OLD! RIGHT??? I know that this is not a Heroic story or anything as such, but he is still a Hero in my mind for Joining our Military, and wanting to do his part, but I am also delighted that He may get the Military Career that he wants! War, or no War!! Byyy fer Now ! Me gotta git my mind back on creating a Funny Stickie that I can post to the group shortly! I just can't seem to come up with anything Funny or Humerous for the CDB bunch any more! swanJ .... |

SwanJ, Kudos to your son for joining the army at age 35. Thank him for his service to our country. He is doing what the army tells him so he is serving whether it is in Iraq, North Dakota, or Hawaii. There would be a lot of courts martials if men & women reported to where they would rather be than where they were told to be. Mom & dad ... it is a parents life to worry about their children and grandchildren. Tha's life. We all come through it on the other side though!!! For all the worry and heartache, there is a ton more happiness and pride from those rascals Thanks for sharing and stay proud of your son and his service, Jim |

While I was in Vietnam, my wife suffered more stress than I did. Odd how that happens. When you are there, you have a feel for the danger you are in but when you are the one at home, the imagination really acts up. |

swanj, your son is a hero to me and a lot of other folks. We wish him well and that he makes it as a computer tech. I also wish that he makes his tour of duty safely. My son is also one of those computer techs and I sometimes have to get him on the phone to get past some problem here on mine. |

SWANJ, It is awesome what your son is doing, but if he wanted a Hi-tech job he should have talked to the Air Force or Navy. In the Army and Marine Corp you are whatever they tell you are regardless of your specialty. He seems like he has a great attitude and will no doubt succeed in whatever he does. It takes courage and drive to make such a drastic change in careers, especially at his age. Tell him "Thank You for his service" for me. You are obviously a good parent for worrying about his well being. Take care and may God Bless you and your family.
