If you are a veteran or are presently in the military and would like to post where you served, an old picture of yourself or a picture of a family member or friend that is or was a veteran, post it here.

I'll get it started.

I served with Hq & Hq Co 2nd Engineer Group (const) at Oso Ri, Korea which was right next to Kimpo Air Base or K-14 as we called it. That air base is not there any longer and the air port has become Kimpo International Airport which is south of Seoul, Korea.

This is me visiting the Imperial Palace in Seoul. Notice that the dress uniform at that time consisted of wool OG's, field jacket, engineer scarf and box type cap with OG pants bloused into boots. This photo was probably made in 1960 or 61.

I was in Naval Aviation working on the F-4 Phantom, A-7 Corsair and the C-9 Skytrain.
Dates of service 5-79 through 6-86 from that date to 1-91 IRR.

Worked on the Egress and Environmental systems. Of all the planes I worked on the Phantom is my favorite.
And I STILL don't have a pic of me yet but I'll get one.

One of my great surprises in life is that I have outlived several of the board, concrete, metal and brick places that I was posted to. Who, at an airbase like that, would ever think they would still be around years after the base wasn't?

Jim, I keep wondering to myself, along abaout the time that the box type cap was discarded, ol Fidel took up to wearing it and has been ever since or was him wearing it the reason it was changed over to the baseball cap style?

I believe Fidel had been wearing the block cap since his revolutionary days. Most probably it was part of the uniforms that we supplied him before he kicked out Batista, took power and embraced communism publically.

About the only Marine that I know really well is one of my 1st cousin's. He was in the 1st Marine Divison and was with them when they got trapped at the Chosen Reservoir in Korea. They survived for several days eating only frozen Tootsie Rolls that was air dropped for them to eat. I've always been a fan of the Tootsie Roll candy ever since I found out that candy company supplied those Marines with it at that time. He managed to make it out of there alright, but it was an ordeal at the time. Now in his older age, a lot of things are happening to him and I don't know how much longer he has.

aw Mtnman don't be fooled by that old story. Chesty and them boys got by eatin dead Chinamen - they just came up with that Tootsie Roll story or else every jarhead would be wanting Chinese served at their messhall too.
They fry up real nice but youre hungry again in an hour.
Its hard to find but the movie Hold Back the Night was about Chosin (Matt Dillon is in it) - I hope someone is preserving that movie.
Them Frozin Chosin Boys kicked butt.

aaaah yes, I had 5 of the SKS set up just about the same way. Two of them I put the black plastic vent guards over the top. Had the 40 round mags ... It is ONE fun rifle to shoot. Mine were Chinese and in about the same condition the one you're holding. I was at a gunshow this past weekend and all they had was comblock rifles ... I wouldn't have paid .25 cents for one much less what they were asking.

I believe that he was propping his camera for a better shot.

I always liked the old style caps that they used before the blocked type I had on. The cap I'm referring to, you can see it in the movie "The Great Raid".

No way Elk - that little ring thing pointin down from the bayonet base is supposed to swing over the end of the muzzle and then lock back - that suppressor is way to long - might as well take that bayonet off.
Guess you could lock it at 90 degrees and use it for cuttin wheat.

Yep - that's the Ranger cap Mtnman.

I wish I could find one of the old style Ranger caps. I did find an aftermarket one in camo, but not the original OD color. I think the cap the Marines wear now is very similar to the Ranger style.

BTW GRITS, tell us a little about your Marine duties, when you were in, where you have been on tour of duties, etc.

This is what it looks like except not in camo, but OD color. These caps were very hard to make, I guess due to the folds and how they were sewn down to the band. The material in this camo version looks like the same kind of material used in those old caps.
