The Hunting Vehicle

Many hunters have a special hunting vehicle. It usually is an old, high-mileage, beat-up, four-wheel drive that looks like a piece of junk to the rest of the world. However, to the proud owner of such a valuable hunting vehicle, it is a treasure. You have no fear of the roughest back roads and brush-choked logging trails. You will take it places you would never dream of driving the family's new sport/utility. But it must be reliable to get you there and back. A vehicle that is seldom used except for a short period of hard driving each year needs a special maintenance program. Start every hunting season with fresh oil, fresh gas in a "cleaned" tank (use a gas-cleaning additive), a tune-up and a general check-out by a competent mechanic. Check hoses, belts, brakes and electrical system. Nothing is more frustrating than to have a really hot hotspot and a vehicle that won't crank to get you there before daylight.

I have a 73 Landcruiser in Virginia that I need to go up and get. Needs an engine rebuild and I've been too busy. It has a PTO winch! Don't see many of those. I used to think I wanted a surplus Hummer, but the woods are too thick up here. The Landcruiser sill be perfect - after I spend a LOT on it!

My husband is always telling people he is going to find a way to hunt using a Subaru to put his kill in. He is not using my Subaru. I am sure he is joking.

Does it have the Cummins diesel engine? I have always had very good experinces with any truck that had a Cummins diesel.

My last mode of transportation to my hunting spot was fuzzy house slippers my kids bought me for my birthday. Up at 6:00 am, hard 30 foot walk to my sons bedroom window and 12 ga. slug at 70 yards brought down the cow elk. You should have been there it was the coldest day that year. When I cracked open the window, a big burst of 10 degree air came blowing in and almost drove me back to bed, but I got er done. A serious hunter must put up with harsh conditions sometimes.
I have a 83 Toyota 4X4 that I bought cheap because it was rolled over. The roof was cut off and a roll cage was put in. It's a 4 cyl and gets around the ranch pretty good. I want to remove the body though and place a 1940 Plymoth pickup cab that I found on it and make a flat bed for it. that will become my daily driver if I can find someone who can switch it out. Long trips I have a 95 Dodge dually that I jsut bought last year. Cummins that gets 21 MPG if I keep it at 65. It's a 2 wheel drive and not very good getting on or off the ranch in the winter.

Hi James sorry i didn't even remember posting to this thread :) Yes it's a turbo diesel Cummings. Rides GREAT and has TONS of power and pull. It did just fine during this years hunt. Heck I'm getting 21-23 MPG with it :)

I would love to have an old Willy's. That little four banger with the short wheel base and the low granny. Them things would climb a tree. I would settle for an old 70s I.H. Scout.

Years ago I had an uncle who had a 43 willies with a ford 289 in it. MAN would that thing fly. In fact it had to much power and it liked to spin it's wheel way to much. That was my reason for never getting a jeep CJ with a 390 in it. To much power and always spinning the tires instead of grabbing and crawling.

Man I have to remember to check other threads in this area.......

James I'm going to tell you straight up. There is NO BETTER 4X4 in the world then a Scout! They stopped making them in 77 (JUST SUCKS) but that thing had positraction front and read axles, positive manual locking hubs, and 9in 31 spline axle that never quit. I have YET even in the Marine Corps found a 4X4 that could do what they did period!!!

Gary, I had a 1983 Ford F150 4WD that has what Ford calls limited slip differential in the rear and also the front axle. It was truly a full four wheel drive as all four wheels would pull at the same time. It would go most anywhere except a swamp. I also used to have an old CJ3 jeep that had a 283 Chevrolet V8 under the hood and it just had too much power.

Then another 4WD that I had was a 1977 Toyota Landcruiser with 411 gears front and rear and 6 cylinder inline engine. It only got 9 mpg, but I think that thing would have pulled a tree if the bark wouldn't slip. I very rarely had to ever get down in 4WD with with it. I pulled a lot of stuck 4WD's out with it over the years and it had a 8,000 lb winch on the front bumper that was used for almost everything.

Well don't know about the FORD as i have pulled way to many of them out over the years BUT never pulled a land cruiser out of anything :) AND had 2 scouts pull me out when I rolled my CJ7 into a mud hole sideways.

That limited slip thing is not as good as the positraction but not bad I guess. My new truck has that same limited slip but it's not on the same level as the scout. In fact my truck will pull like crazy and love to play in the mud but I know the system is not as good at the scouts system.

I will say this about some of the new 4X4 systems. The technology is good and bad. My wife durango is so awesome on snow and ice. In fact i just cant get over how well it does in snow and ice (momma wont let me try it in mud) but all that technology will sure cause you problems if anything goes out......

I want to do the exhaust and intake this next year, that will kick the performance up a bit :) Nothing like a 5.9L turbo diesel breathing :) Heck I'm get 21 MPG now with more power then I need on a daily basis. Cant wait to put good tires on it for the winter and start ;pulling fords out again :)

I bought my oldest son a Yamaha PW50 dirt bike about a month ago. He had never ridden a motorcycle in all of his 6 years. He took to it like a fish to water. He is hooked on that 2 wheeled dirt thrower now. We have been riding on our property every weekend. Problem is now I'm kinda hankering for a bike now. I have owned four wheelers for over a decade. I rode a friend of mine's Kawasaki KLX 250 enduro recently, and really enjoyed it. There so many different bikes to pick from. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions? This would be for trail riding, not competing on Motocross.
