Are any of your medications affecting you and giving you nightmares? I had a few months after each op where they were pretty much constant.

Dear Alastair
I hope that your GP is helping you to cope with the depression. I know how you feel - I had depression, pain, another operation and continuous stress with work being very unsympathetic and really awful over me being off sick. It was all getting too much. After my latest MRI, it seems that after my C5/6 fusion, my MRI looks much the same as before with a new disc bulge at the same level that was fused. Also it showed foraminal stenosis at C6 and osteophytes. I feel that I have gone through the operation and the pain of the last 17 months all for nothing. I am having lumbar ablations on Wednesday and am dreading it, and then hopefully will get an appt to see someone about my neck and MRI results. It's no wonder that we are all suffering with depression and anxiety. Chronic and acute pain is so debilitating and there is no break from it. It's getting harder and harder to work and carry on trying to put a brave face on. I now also have a colonoscopy due to my bowel problems which I'm convinced are due to my spinal nerve damage. I understand what you are all going through and wish you all well,
Take Care

I sympathise with you with the problems with you rcolon I'm having similar problems with bowel incontinence.

Hi Alastair,
Sorry to hear that you also have bowel trouble. It is just one more problem to add to the others , but also one that is very upsetting and embarrassing, and on top of everything else, it is awful.Have you had it confirmed if it has been caused by spinal/nerve damage? Just wondering, as I'm having to undergo tests, but I think it will be down to nerve damage. I seem to get one problem sorted out then another hits me! They all seem connected but I will find out soon. No wonder we are depressed!
Take care
Joanne

Hi, Joanne,
you've hit the button on the head.

I am taking antidepressants, but they don't seem to be working been a fortnight on them and still not feeling any better, trembling, and things

A fortnight is quite soon to be making a judgement, I felt much worse for a week or two and they gradually started to work. Hope things improve for you.

Hi,
They take a while to start working and for you to feel the benefit of them. After a while, I was having terrible anxiety attacks and was given propanalol but I felt worse on them. I carried on with the anti depressants (I have taken them for 14 months) and they got me through a very dark period whilst waiting for my last operation, a grievance with my boss over her unreasonable behaviour, clinging on to my job with my fingertips at the very caring NHS, and redeployment). I was about to ask to be taken off them when my pain returned with a vengeance! I am very much better mentally but not physically, give them a try. Hopefully you will start to feel much better,
Joanne

Thanks, it's the depression that is getting me down.

I really could do with another surgery, but can't do it. With the depression. It won't let me do it mentally

Hi Alastair,
I was very, very depressed before my last surgery on 31/3/15 and only for the fact that my Daughter was getting married on 9/5/15 and extreme pressure from work to return, (even though I was physically and mentally incapable) I would have postponed it. As it is, my neck is still the same! I had my facet ablations on Wednesday and already my lower back pain is improving. They hurt me less than my facet injections did, which was a very nice surprise! Hopefully, it will work and last for a while. Just need to get my neck and bowel problems sorted out now, and hopefully the depression will start to improve too. I have my colonoscopy on Friday so I should find out if the problem is my bowel or if it's spinal or nerve damage causing it! Hope your depression improves Alastair, it crippled me, and was ruining my life. I have changed my job to a less stressful one, dropped my hours and basically this is my last chance to keep working before I have to give up. Best wishes with your pain and depression, I know exactly how awful you are feeling,
Take care
Jo

Thanks for your message Jo, it's good to know that we are not alone.

None of the antidepressants have worked for me so far.
Best,
