I am too old for health insurance so any intervention I have had has had to be paid for with savings and i am getting a bit fed up forking out for this and that over the last 10 years With private MRIs, private pain injections and a decompression with Mr Shackleford. I am now in Spain and under the Spanish Health system. Gone through 3 years of interviews with an "orthopaedic" consultant - 6 monthly - and the last one, injections for sciatica didn't work and was told that I am not bad enough for an operation, however, I do have an appointment with the pain clinic. I won't go into the stupid department but it has had me in tears at one time. So I paid for MRIs and Xrays with a Valencian consultant. Very very thorough. Went to Clinical Benidorm (on TV Benidorm ER) and had over an hour on the MRI machine - I have never had a coloured! MRI before. Then I went to the X Ray department and did the usual X Ray but they also did a movement Xray and this apparently was the one that the surgeon got more information from. Met the surgeon last week and he has recommended spinal stabilization with rods and screws - PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP - HAVE YOU HAD THIS OPERATION - WHAT RESULTS HAVE YOUR HAD ETC.... He explained so well, no joking (like Mr Shackleford) and he went through things very slowly and actually answered my questions before I asked them. The operation will cost something in the region of 20,000€ (X Rays and MRIs cost 1,300€) But so far checking on the type of screws. He is doing L3/4 and L4/5 and the one above which is looking like a bit wobbly. He told me that I had sclorosis a little at the top of the wpine as well as osteoporosis (would have wouldn't I) and I take two lots of "drinks" a day for the osteoporosis. He also told me THAT MR SHACKLEFORD SHOULD HAVE DONE THE STABILIZATION AT THE TIME OF DECOMPRESSION - in his view. Bit annoying when I paid £7,000 for decompression. Any help, advice anyone can give me I would be really grateful. I feel a bit scarey that this might not work after a while. I am very flexible doing exercise nearly every day, at 70 I can still touch my toes lol. Just wonder if the rod is flexible. had a look on the internet and can't find a lot of information. Thanks for reading this... |
| After being messed about by my doctors in Kendal for many years I went privately in 2009 with Mr Shackleford. Because of my age I couldn't have ADR instead he decompressed L4/5 and L3/4 Still got issues: sciatica, groin pain. Seeing consultant in February in Spain where I now live. We will see .................... | |

Hi Anne Short answer for now as recovering from surgery. My experience has been that everywhere an area of rigidity has been put in the spine it creates additional forces elsewhere in the spine. I'm no engineer but that makes sense to me really. I do hope you get an answer that works for you - hoping you don't need to go down such a drastic route that may create more issues going forward. Good luck Shirley |
