Sacro-iliac joint problems; SIJ issues now - 8 years post fusion

In May I started with sacro-iliac joint pain which is probably due to the fact that I was fused at L1/2 in 2013. Fusion put extra pressure on other joints. At the time I thought the biggest concern was the disc above or below being affected but recently I read on the net that fusion can affect the sacro-iliac joints and hip joints.

It's a bit of a long story but when it started I had a lot of hip pain so I went to see a hip specialist who did plain x-rays & MRI & said my right hip was OK. He found 2 ovarian cysts on the MRI & thought maybe they were pressing on the femoral nerve & giving me hip pain so I went to see a gynae specialist. After an ultrasound, blood test & smear the gynae specialist gave me the all clear. I then went to see Mr Shackleford who diagnosed sacro-iliac joint degeneration. Last Monday I had an SIJ injection but it's day 6 from that today & it doesn't seem to have worked. I go back to see him at the beginning of December so I'm wondering what the next step is.

As far as I know the next step may be nerve ablations & then if no better fusion, although another fusion is not what I need.

Can anybody enlighten me??

The injections can take up to 2 weeks to "kick in" so don't be in too much of a hurry to go rushing into abalations

They said I should get the maximum effect by 1 week & it says that on the leaflet they gave me.

Each of my spine problems is an individual case but generally I've never had much benefit from injections. It was very sore/painful when he did them. Will try to remain positive though.

Does anybody on here have experience of sacro-iliac joint problems? I'm not that well up on this area but am learning as I go along.

Before my injection over a week ago I didn't have pain in my sacrum but in my right hip, groin, down my leg & a bit in my buttock. It was very sore when the specialist injected & pressed on my sacrum. The sacrum pain was settling for the first couple of days but now I'm moving, bending, twisting more it's really flared things up. It's very painful to sit down & I'm really struggling with pain levels. I'm a lot worse now than before the injection. I've had lots of injections higher up my spine but this has really stirred things up. It feels like this is one problem too many for me with the spine history I have.

Would be grateful to hear from anybody else with sacro-iliac experience. :ph43r:

I remember Pip as she had her ADR op a month after me & I remember she went on to have SIJ issues. I did contact her before my SIJ injection.

She didn't get a very good result from her SIJ fusion but knows of a patient who did. SIJ degeneration doesn't seem to be a very common complaint which surprises me as fusion can cause issues later on with SIJ's and hips and surgeons still carry out a lot of fusions.

I 'phoned up the hospital the other day as I still had a lot of pain in my sacrum at 12 days post injection & could only sit down for a couple of minutes or so at a time. I spoke to a very helpful nurse who said what Alastair wrote - that it can take up to 2 weeks to settle down. My sacrum is a bit easier today but unfortunately all the pain relief I had in the hip & leg has come back so will have to see where I go from here.
