Hi, I recently had a follow up appointment with Dr Shackelford at Warrington discussing my discography. He showed me the results and one of my lumber discs is a complete mess which is shown by the dye. There are bits of it all other the place, looks like a car crash. The dye was actually flowing into my spinal column.
I was wondering, he mentioned something about bacteria being released that are causing my sciatica, is this a concern? If I get the disc replaced will I still have the problem of the stuff that is floating around my spinal column?
Also, I saw him at the general hospital and I forgot to ask about monetary concerns, but he didn't even mention it to me. I would have thought that he would have discussed it.
I was given a leaflet about lumbar disc replacement that was from the NHS, so I take it that the treatment is free on the nhs or something? Can't understand why he didn;t even ask about funding, I am confused.
Thanks
Drew

If you see someone at their NHS clinic then you are being treated on the NHS so any necessary treatment would be covered. If you had any infection this would be dealt with before any treatment. You've got alot to think about so write out a list of questions that you'd like to ask, its very natural to forget to ask such things when you are dealing with such awful news. When is your next appointment?

I was told there was a long waiting list and will be next year for the surgery, I think they have you in a fortnight before to go over the details, so I won't have an actual date for the surgery for a while. To get this surgery for free I have no idea how lucky I am, truly the greatest gift I will receive in my life. I had no idea the NHS had started doing this operation.

So it sounds like all is ok for you to proceed for the disc replacement if you are on the waiting list. I had my double disc replacement on the NHS in 2002. Do you know which disc is being replaced and what kind of implant is being used?

Didn't know they have been doing it on nhs since 2002. Not sure what type of disc it is, doesn't say on leaflet was given. Think it is L5-S1 disc. Certainly feels like it.

It just depends how much pain that you are in, and if you can hold out until the NHS get to do the job. I have known people 2nd mortgage their houses to go privately and get the surgery done within a month.

You're a very lucky person.
Best,

They'd been doing it for a while before I had mine done. Sure you could contact the clinic again if you had questions, you've got a long wait by the sounds of it and it'd be nice to know exactly what the plan is.
