Hi Im after a bit of advice. I had adr at c5/6 6 months ago. This has now self fused (not 100%) and im in pain again on the site and below. I have bad lower back pain with herniated L5/S1 and now my middle back is hurting. Now that my neck is hurting so bad again and self fusing. Couple this with a bad lower back with confirmed herniated disc at L5/S1 and just to top it off the middle of my back is hurting although this may be due to the problems in my neck, in all my entire spine is hurting. Now I have 2 different surgeons looking after me, the one for the neck says leave it as the pain should go away. The one for the lower back thinks its not that bad from the MRI but has ordered a discogram. Now to me they are not taking a holistic view of my whole spine. How do you think I should tackle this? The surgeon for my lower back has little manners and seems more like a mechanic and does not really care how I feel. Im now feeling totally lost and dont know what to do. Ive gone downhill badly in the last 2 weeks and with the pain being top to bottom im not coping well, but I have to. I have 2 young kids and am being made redundant and am having to attend interviews like crazy (3 this week alone) its really starting to take its toll. So how would you tackle this? My neck surgeon is a tad **** off with me, basically he went back to Greece before my operation so I complained sying they were out of the 18 week times (when that applied) so another surgeon stepped in but he has followed me up, but I was so desperate to get the pain gone. So 2 choices, I contact my rude and none friendly surgeon dealing with my lower back or the nice but annoyed surgeon. I just want the whole pain and problems joined up and delt with as an entire view. Or do I just wait for the disco to see what that shows? Lastly im not on pain meds, I used to be on 4 different ones including gabapentin and tramadol but they made me sick and spaced out, but im now so bad I feel I cannot battle on anymore without them, should my gP have the knowledge to review meds? Sorry for the bleat, im at the end with this and had enough im just so tired |

You might have to take the tablets and join me in the spaced out club (it does lessen after a bit though), you can then think a bit more clearly and the way forward. GP's aren't experts but getting taking something now is the most important thing (ask for a referral to pain clinic as well). Sounds like a referral to someone who deals with both cervical and lumbar would be a good idea. |

I know where you are, having given the secret away that your surgeon went back to Greece. He was an absolutely fabulous person. In your part of the country it's difficult to find anyone that relates to both the cervical and the lumbar areas together. I know what you mean when you say they should take a holistic view of your spine as a whole and I'm sure you're right. I don't think we've got anyone in our surgeon's list in your area that does both, one of the greatest and most wonderful phrases if you do find someone, is to say to your GP you want a "second opinion". Your GP should be able to monitor your medication, if a painkiller stops working you need to change it. Best, Alastair

yes that is him, I fear though I have annoyed him by changing to another surgeon. I thought I should have the same surgeon look after me as a whole. I asked to move to the other surgeon as he undertook my neck operation and wanted him to also look after my lower back. Really i would love to move back to Mr K. I am going to try and get hold of him to see if he can see me, going downhill badly is an understatement. I will also try to get a referal to a pain clinic... |

Well I emailed the surgeon who should have done my operation on my neck and he has said he no longer deals with me, this just leaves me with the other sugeon who seems to act like I am wasting his time. As I said I am waiting for a discogram. Do you think this proceedure will show the bigger picture of my whole back if they use discs higher up from L5/S1 as control discs? I think I am hoping the proceedure will show him that things are not good. Ive never had a full scan of my back and with all the issues I have I am surprised they have not does this. So will the disco help this? Last question... If I decide I have had enough whats the process of choosing a new hospital? and is there anyway to get into a surgeons list? thank you |

Yes you have a choice of any hospital, but you can't choose your surgeon within the hospital by dictate, you might if you saw them privately first get on their NHS list. There is an article about choice of hospitals as from 1 April. In notices and announcements folder. Best, Alastair
