Wow that was quick!

You won't dislodge the discs by falling but you could do other damage which at this stage of your recovery would not be a good idea. Also walking on icy paths changes your gait and puts stress on your spine. Take care when you are out!

I use walking poles and if the paths are slippy I walk at the edge of the road where the grit has spread to. I am getting some grippy things to put on my shoes as I am out and about more than when we had the last bad spell.

Yes you must take care especially in this snowy icy weather,

You can have a broken leg or arm etc just to keep you occupied at Christmas.

This is the most dangerous time in your recovery when you feel so good and it's so easy to do something untoward accidentally. Just try and think twice before you do something for the next 3 to 4 months, especially if it's to do with stretching and heavyweights.

Be aware that your posture has changed, make sure you don't go back into your old "Poor" posture reach compensated for your spine problem. VBW,

cheers for advice.alastair i dont do weights or go gym but exercises like pilates. i walk on snow on field with dogs not really on roads.
my posture has changed as i am 5 ft 9 again instead of 5 ft 6 ,i lost height after discetomies.
i recovered quickly i think because i was fit before my accident and tried to carry on stretching and being flexible to keep myself mobile.
physio said i will still maybe get some pain and that it takes about 6 months to 1 year before we know if operation worked etc.

Wow, Naintaid that was quick. Well done - you are doing really, really well. I wish I was 5' 9" I am a petite 5 foot with a bit extra with the ADR - ha! ha!

My physio says that I will be "seeing him for several months". It isn't my back that is the problem. I am and doing really well I also do pilates (have done for 10 yrs) and have good core strength. But the problem is strengthening my left leg which is weak after having sciatica in my leg and foot for 11 yrs. He has given me exercises to do and I realise it isn't something that can be sorted in a week. So frustrating.

I agree with the other forum members. Do take care in the snow and on icy paths. I slipped and fell on black ice (causing the ruptured disc) so I am very wary of slipping. Make sure you wear walking boots or shoes with a good grip. Walking poles are great as they give extra support. I tend to hibernate or only go out when I have support of my husband or a friend.

You don't want to undo all the good work Mr S has done to you.

Cheers
Nailah :D

hi nailah, shame your leg is still weak ,i never had a problem walking my issues pre op were always sitting and lying down.i still dont like sitting in normal chairs,i have reclinier or lie on floor.
i have some pain in back and told physio i thought i would be pain free after op and she reminded me i am only 9 weeks p.op .i keep forgetting as it seems sooo long ago now.
i have special boots for walking which i bought 5 years ago so i dont slip.
i have just started on diclofenic to help and it is,otherwise i feel fine.
my scar has gone purple now and is very straight and flat ,so no issues with that.
best wishes for ongoing recovery x
