Thought I would just put an update on about my visit to Mr Shackleford. Went to see him at the beginning of October and he was really amused about the fact that on examining me he thought I needed discs replacing and when the MRI scan results came through an hour later (went private under Benenden to Spire Cheshire) he was right and it showed 2 discs needing done. 'Do so love it when I am right' was the source of his amusement!!! I didn't feel ready at the time to be going through it all again even though the neck pain is terrible now and my left hand side is very weak. He told me to think about it until I have my back checked over at my 1 year check up in January. I am now more or less sure that it is going to be the only option for relief. Don't know if everyone else is the same but this freezing weather is making me almost seize-up!!!! I can barely move my neck and my back is going in the same direction even though I am moving about just the same. Maybe it is tensing up of the muscles with the cold. One problem I do have with the thoughts of the op is why does my neck go worse when I have a back flare-up???? Having had the lumbar ADR I would have thought that the lumbar region would not affect my neck problems. I wouldn't want to go through the neck op and it be still affected by my back. Any ideas would be appreciated. Love Gilly xxx |

Despite having no cervical problems I have trouble doing anything that means lifting my arms above my shoulders. Its due to tightness in the lumbar area and anything that pulls on a diagonal from there is difficult. I wear a down gilet most of the winter time as keeping it warm really seems to help with my pain levels. |

Thinking of you. It's rotten that things have got so bad with your neck. If you decide to go ahead in January I hope you don't have to wait too long after that & without the delays you had last time. I don't have any experiences with cervical issues but think that the theory about one area of the spine having a knock on effect on the other makes sense. I have a problem with one of my knees (bursitis) & it's flared up badly each time I've had spinal surgeries. My GP reckons it's to do with the my gait & the fact that my knee has to make up for the weakness in a spine that is recovering from major trauma. |

Hi Gilly Sorry you now have problems with your neck and I agree with you over the weather as it is playing havoc with my legs, walking almost as bad as before surgery. I agree with the theory that any spine problem effects other parts of the body its a knock on effect. Hope things get sorted for you soon. Tony |

Thanks everyone once again for all your support - I will probably go ahead with the surgery but know that there is a six month waiting list for Mr Shackleford so it will be getting into summer before anything is done - if there is by chance any improvement, though I doubt it, - at least I will have time to make the decision then.Love Gilly xx |
