Morning all from a sunny Teesside
Had my ADR L4-L5 done last thursday at Warrington with Mr S & his team.
I am home now. I was kept in a little longer due to the distance to get home but I feel really really good.
I am on diclofenac and cocodamol at the moment but I am hoping to start coming off them after another 2-3 weeks when things have settled down. I don't have much pain at all so things are looking good. My back which felt it had two metal rods running up each side of my spine preventing any bending has gone and the tightness down through my buttocks and left calf has also gone. My left arm pain which I mentioned a couple of weeks back has also gone.
My walking is excellent, though slow as I need to build up my muscle tone better in my left leg. I am having 2/3 small walks spread throughout the day. If I do 3 one is only about 400yds but it gets me out and moving. It's amazing, I can feel my left leg ligaments and everything working instead of dragging a lifeless lump of concrete round with me which seemed to weigh twice as much as the right leg.
I know there are people who like I was - not knowing to go through with ADR and I know its early days for me but I feel its been very successful. I am getting my life back. I don't even lay down to put my socks on anymore. Just those little things put a smile on my face now. Guess what I'm saying is I know we are all different and we all have ADR for different reasons. I could have been put off by a few on here who unfortunately havn't had the outcome they wished. For those undecided and worried there are plenty out there who it has worked for and who will be forever grateful for a new life - because that's just how it feels - a chance to live again and enjoy it. Never thought I would ever feel like this again.
Thanks to Mr S and all staff at Warrington. Thank you all so much for looking after me so well. Don't worry Alistair I remember slow and steady wins the race. So far I think I han't done too much. Sitting no more than 30 mins and not lifting etc. I really get the urge to walk more though. I reckon with all my pottering round the house up and down stairs and 2/3 walks I'm clocking around 3/4 to 1 mile a day. I come in and lay down after a walk and masage my left leg. I feel I could do more but the brochure says increase walking after 2 weeks to 2 mile so I'm sticking to what I've been doing so far and no more.
Take care everyone and thanks for all the tips. Prunes I didn't need - I had the opposite problem LOL
Spine problems since I can remember.
Fobbed off for over 10 years by physios as muscular

Jan 2009 Finally got MRI scan
August 2009 Got within sniffing distance of ADR with Mr Papastefanou who left for pastures new.
Managed to get transferred to Mr Shackleford
November 2010 ADR done on disc l4-l5
Got a new lease of life thanks to Mr Shackleford.

It's great to hear of your successful surgery Carl, just great news. Your long wait has been worth it.

Hi Carl,
Sounds as though all is going well - Mr Shackleford and the Warrington team are brillliant - I had 2 discs replaced in January by him - don't be tempted to overdo it though. I did a little at the beginning and it can set you back for a while.
Good luck with the rest of your recovery.
