hi was your leg weak before op ? .i never had a problem walking even before,my problems were sitting and lieing down. i still dont like sitting ,it makes me feel sick after a while so i got tablets from dr. i have a recliner chair and am ok in that. i still use a hot water bottle when back hurts..like now. my scar healed nicely, very straight. if i wear jeans i can feel it rub so wear leggings or trackies mostly. i have xray in dec to make sure discs not moved. it seems ages ago now that i had op as my life as been so much better in last month. me and pelvic floor exercises dont mix well, sick of doing them after each son lol. |

Oh Marion, Take it easy and try and take your time with your recovery - you really will reap better rewards in the long run. This op is most definitely not a quick fix!!! I know it seems and long time and frustrating but you have so much time to get better and then start going out shopping. you probably felt vunerable because you are not ready to be out there yet!!! Yes, I've had a weak leg for over 11 yrs when I slipped and fell on black ice. Rupturing my L4/L5 disc causing sciatica and weakness down my left leg and foot. I am sitting ok now for about 30 mins, walking for about 15-20 mins. We are all different. Each month, I too, feel stronger – it takes time. I use a warm wheat bag for comfort when back aches. Still on the meds but trying to reduce slowly. Persevere with the exercises they will strengthen your back muscles. Marion, don't be too hard on yourself. Nailah x |

Hi Maz, hope you are doing ok, sounds like you have had a rough time but hopefully you should start feeling better soon. im now two weeks post op and had similar experiences to you really. ive had about six hours sleep in the last three days because of pain down my legs. ive been the docs and asked for prebagablin they really wasnt sure how much to start me on so have given me 25mg a day for the next two week so hopefully it should settle down. I also had physio a week after my op and they have given me stretching exerc to do. I have been out of the house walking down the street but i dont think i could manage more then 15mins at the min without having to sit down. I know what you mean about being stood in asda and having everyone fly past you, i felt like a human target when i went to the shop the other day, i was walking round all tense and hypervigilant... i ended up putting my cruches in the trolley holding onto it to stabalise myself and ramraided my way to the till lol! Hope your feeling better soon. x PS how is your stomach feeling have you had any burning sensation in it? mine feels like its on fire but ive had the wound checked and they said its healing nicely and isnt infected. |

Hi there Lois You should speak to your GP again, or pharmacist, about the recommended dose of Pregabalin for neuropathic pain, you need to be on adequate doses for it to be effective. Why don't you give them a phone call rather than suffer? Six hours sleep in three days will catch up on you and take its toll, try to get something sorted if you can. Lynda |

Hi Lois I am on 25mg of Pregabaline 3 times a day, in addition to my other medications. It has reduced the pain in my legs but hasn’t taken it away. I leaned forward this morning without thinking to pick something up off the table, and pain ripped across my lower back & down my left leg and left me gasping for breath & feeling sick. My physio has reduced my exercises to two basic stretching exercises to see if the pain will settle down. I am still struggling even with those, because of the nerve pain. My stomach hasn’t been too bad, just a little sore. I am massaging bio oil onto my scar twice a day and I think the massaging action may have helped. I haven’t ventured out of the house again, but I do have an appointment with my GP this afternoon, because he wants to start reducing my Fentanyl, and replace it with Tramadol. Not looking forward to leaving the lovely warm house to venture into the snow. I hope that things are settling down for you and that you are improving. Marion x |

Hello Just over five weeks post op now and still struggling with the very slow progress. I am not measuring myself against anyone else now (as I was in the beginning). My GP has reduced my Fentanyl patches from 37mcg to 25mcg and has replaced with oxycodone. I am not finding the oxycodone as effective as the Fentanyl and by late afternoon/early evening I have a fair amount of back pain. Still only doing two basic stretching exercises and am unable to walk any distance. I went into town today, which was the first time in many, many months. I only managed an hour and a half, and I was in a wheelchair but I managed to see the Christmas decorations. I was in more pain when I got home but hey it was worth it just for the change of scenery. I don't know why we have never thought of hiring a wheelchair before! I have my six weekly check up with Mr Shackleford next week, so will update to say what he says. I hope fellow sufferers are coping with this cold weather. Marion |

Hi My appointment is on Tuesday afternoon, weather permitting. I have had problems with walking and weakness in my legs for two years, so I guess I should have known that it would take a while after the op. I haven't had any problems with Fentanyl but I was on buprenorphine initially and they made me very very angry and psychotic, so I had to come off them  I am having physio with a lady that I have used on & off for years. She has never had an ADR patient before, but she made the effort to find out what the op entailed, and liaised with the physios at the hospital where I had the op. Physio is going very slowly. I started off with about five exercises, but they have been reduced to two basic stretching exercises for now because they were making my pain worse. It looks as though you are doing very well, and I guess that is because you had a good level of fitness before the op. I have had eight years of doing very little so I think it is going to be a long road to recovery. Marion |

It will be a slow process Marian as you say because you have had pain and lack of mobility for so long, I was told the same as my injury was 20 years ago and was left untreated for so long and then in the last two years before my op I barely left the house, hopefully you will see some improvement in the next couple of months. Take Care now, I know how frustating it can be but I am so glad you have got past the stage of comparing yourself to other people - I did the same - but it is different for people who have had problems long term. HI Alastair & Gilly I have never had a problem with my posture, in fact just the opposite. I think it stems back to when I was a girl, being tall my Mom would always tell me to sit up straight or stand up straight. The result is that I never slump and every one comments on my good posture. One of my physio exercies entails slumping in a chair, and I had real problems being able to do it I have received a letter from Mr Shackelford today, that he has done for another body, and he states that it will be a minimum of 6 months before I will be returning to work. That made me feel better, as the physio at the hospital (pre op) told me 6 weeks!!! I knew that was ut of the question. Marion |

Hiya Mr S did a letter on my nehalf to send to someone (another body), double dutch I know. I was 5'7" but lost some height due to reduction in discs. I haven't checked my height post op, but according to Mr S you only gain a few milimetres with the replacement discs, so you have done very well to gain 3". My job is office based, sat at a computer for 8 hours a day. Not ideal. What do you do? When do you think you will be able to return to work? Marion |
