At 2 weeks post surgery I would NOT be doing exercises but walking (strolling)- - - - -- also with a bloated stomach your posture will be way out. I would just try and give your body time to settle down

if they are the ones you were given by hospital physios then they will be fine. if they are causing alot if discomfort then I'd check with gp, similarly your gp will be able to advise if any mess will help your legs. there nerve pain meds and muscle relaxants that might be helpful.

I had some strange throbbing/pulsing pains in my legs until about 6 weeks after my op, then they went away. I was told to expect this as the nerves are stretched during the op and take a while to recover, plus your new posture will affect your gait and your muscles will need to get used to that.

The physios at Guys had me doing exercises from the day after my op, before I was even out of bed. Gentle abdominal contractions, which they said would help the wound heal as they increase the blood flow to the muscles, pelvic tilts and side lying clams to exercise the back and bottom muscles.
2004-05 After 12 yrs of serious competitive sport, degeneration and tears L5/S1 and L4/5. 6 wks off work and went back p/t only. Told too young for surgery at 31 and that it probably won't help
2005-09 Dorsal root ganglion/steroid injections, amitriptyline, physio, osteopath, pilates and swimming 4 times per wk, back to working f/t
2009 Pain worse, saw Mr Lam at Guys. MRI: further degeneration in both discs and tear in L4/5. Discogram May 2009

I am 7 weeks post op and doing well.

However, I had terrible pains in both calves (in the night and early morning) from about the 2 week. I couldn't believe it. No back pain but I was getting pain in my calves I had never had before. I did all the physio exercises that I was given but to no effect. Husband massaged my calves but the pain still returned. The pain got so bad I went off to my doctor and was prescribed Quinine. Yes, this is for malaria but also for restless legs! The medication worked a treat and I stopped taking the tablets after about 2 weeks but the pain came back. I was on the Quinine for about 3 weeks and I have had no pain in my calves since then.

My doctor couldn't explain why I had these pains in my calves and I forgot to ask when I had my 6 week post op last Monday.

Don't worry about the swollen stomach - that will reduce in time. I am back to wearing my normal trousers - just watch that they is not too tight around the stomach.

I was told at my 6 week post op that I cannot have any physio for another 6 weeks. I have been walking, doing my core and gentle Pilates exercises. You will get there it just takes time.

Regards
Nailah

Hi Nailah
I have problems with stiffness in calves and my neurolgist prescribed diazepam. I only take it for 3 or 4 days if I have a flare up, it is a very good muscle relaxant and solves the problem. Maybe worth asking about.

Quinine sulphate is given in 200 or 300 mg doses usually in this country for leg cramps. It is not prescribed in the USA.
