Canon/Original: Original

Codename: None

Real Name: Nell Cypher

Nickname: Osmose/Mose(pronounced mows)

Age: 30

Gender: Male

Race: Mutant

Appearance:
Nell is 6’2” and weighs 170 pounds. He has golden blonde hair and green eyes. His facial features are on the sharp side with an angular chin and nose. Nell is fit and relatively well muscled. He has the strong and lithe body of a fencer. Nell does not wear facial hair and lights to keep his hair short. Besides a small tattoo of a silhouetted jester on his right hip, Nell has no distinctive marks on his body. A tooth, his righthand incisor next to his canine, is chipped from a juggling accident.

Clothing:
In his day to day, Nell prefers to wear blue jeans or cargo shorts. He usually wears plain v-neck shirts with short sleeves or long sleeve shirts without a v-neck. His shirts tend to be some form of beige or olive green but he has many colors in his wardrobe. He generally wears a black or brown belt with semi-casual shoes that are also black or brown. Nell almost always wears ankle socks. Even in the winter.

Nell’s juggling attire is a jester’s outfit that is mostly muted orange and blue in color. It is made of finer materials that shimmer as he moves about. The outfit has various odd balls and bobbles sewn into it that jiggle wildly when Nell is in motion. It is complete with a jester’s dangly hat and upward curving shoes. It is also quite ruffly.

Weapons / Armor / Gear:
Nell carries no combat related items on him except for a small can of mace attached to his keychain. He does tend to carry some small objects in one of his pockets that he can juggle when he has nothing better to do.

Skills / Education/ Training:
Nell is a professional fencer. He started fencing at his high school in New Jersey. After high school he pursued fencing as a serious practice and now teaches his own fencing classes on weekdays. On Saturdays in late August to early October, Nell does a fencing stage performance at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival.

Nell is a semi-professional juggler. It is a skill that he has been practicing since his elementary school days. Nell has taken many juggling classes and has a degree in juggling (yes, this exists). Ever since moving to Minnesota in his 20s, Nell has worked as a roving juggler at a local Renaissance Festival.

Powers:

Object Based Skill Absorption:
By picking up any object that had been used by someone previously, Nell will instinctively have the same level of skill using that item as the previous user/s. This means, assuming that Nell would be equally capable of using any object as any prior users of said object, he will be able to use it in the same manner as those past users. This comes to him as an instinct meaning he is not consciously aware that he now knows how to use this object. He only becomes capable of benefitting from his mutant ability if he attempts to use the object. As an example, if Nell picked up the trombone of a skilled trombonist and attempted to play it, he would be able to play that trombone just as well the owner of the trombone. This knowledge is not acquired permanently. He only knows how to use the object for as long as he has the object on his person and for a short period of time in which information still lingers after releasing the object (about 10 seconds). This power is purely additive in nature. It only enhances Nell’s own ability to use objects.

Though the use of objects involving his power comes to him instinctively, he is capable of learning from using other people’s knowledge when using an object. This is a slow process and requires that he be able to pay close attention to what is doing when he is using an object that his power affects. In a non-stressful setting, when using an object that contains other peoples’ experiences, Nell can pay attention to what he is doing with and slowly gain permanent knowledge about what he sees himself doing with these objects.

Sight Based Skill Mimicry:
Upon seeing any skilled act performed (such as dancing or painting) by another person, Nell can exactly imitate that action as long as it was observed carefully. He maintains the ability to copy what he has observed for 48 hours after the observing took place. Similar to his other power, this can only be done if Nell is as physically capable of performing the feat as the person who originally did it.

Weakness:

Object Based Skill Absorption:
As was briefly discussed, Nell has to be as physically capable of using an object in order to truly use it as well as that person. He would not be able to successfully use a large warhammer for example because he lacks the physical strength for something like that. He would also not be able to manage the same feats as someone who has superhuman dexterity or flexibility though he would still have whatever technical knowledge these people had regarding the object.

When using a one-handed object, Nell will be less good at using that object if he attempts to use it with a different hand than the previous user would have. If for example, someone normally threw knives with their left hand and Nell tried to throw those same knives with his right hand, the throws would not be quite as accurate.

Sight Based Skill Mimicry
With room for only very minor deviation, Nell is only capable of imitating exactly what he has seen. He cannot observe someone perform a skill and instantaneously know everything about that skill. He is limited to what he observed. If he were to observe someone picking a lock he would only know how to pick the exact same kinds of lock during the 48 hour period in which his mimicry power works. He would not be able to pick any other locks that he found.

If Nell does not observe something carefully than the things he did not see will be missing from his own attempts to copy it.

Personality:
As a man who is generally pretty good at anything he wants to try to do, Nell is cheerful in general. His life has gone rather smoothly and he has a sunny disposition as a result. He can be pretty strict when it comes to teaching fencing but he is generally described as more of a fun teacher overall. As a probable side-effect of dressing as a jester on the regular, Nell loves to crack jokes and has a soft spot for children. Nell abides by society’s rules pretty strictly. He is extremely patient. His patience can be seen as a problem for he will persist long after other people have grown weary of whatever activity they are engaged in. Nell generally tries to help others and will do what he can to see that others do well.

History:
Nell grew up in New Jersey. In elementary school he took an interest in juggling after a juggling act came to perform at his school. He used some allowance to buy a used juggling kit from a local hobby store and found that he had a knack for it. It quickly became a part of who he is. He learned what he could about juggling. He read books, went to see shows when he could, and when he was a little older he used the internet for research when his parents let him. He practiced almost daily. Middle school is when Nell began the habit of carrying a selection of small items around with him to juggle. Nell quickly discovered that this wasn’t the only thing he seemed to be naturally good at. In fact, he just so happened to be good at most things he tried, to an impressive degree. Throughout elementary school and middle school Nell played sports with various degrees of success. Hands down he was the best batter on his junior baseball team. In high school, feeling a need to challenge himself, Nell tried out for his high school’s fencing team. He practiced this vigorously at school and at home while still managing to practice juggling and do pretty well in his academics. He really liked to practice fencing at home with his own foil because he didn’t do nearly as well at home for some reason. He wanted to make sure that he wasn’t falling behind other students outside of his classes. In time he found that his at home practices were going nearly as well as his time spent in his classes. Nell joined in high school fencing tournaments and always did very well.

After high school, Nell continued to pursue his passions. Nell moved to Oklahoma to pursue a degree in Street Art Performance with a focus in juggling. He continued to train his fencing skills, taking classes and taking part in tournaments. His parents helped to pay for his some of his college. He took a job at a bakery to pay for his education as well. He started off doing basic tasks but was switched to doing frosting when, while playing around, his managers discovered he was an excellent froster and decorator. During his time in Oklahoma, Nell met a woman during his fencing escapades that set him up with a job at a fencing school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Upon graduating, Nell moved to Minneapolis and took the job. After learning of a local Renaissance Festival, Nell sought to become a part of their shows and was approved for a roaming juggling act.

At the age of 26, Nell went on his first date with a man named Chase Martin. Chase also performed at the Renaissance Festival as a juggler. Unlike Nell, Chase had a small stage performance. Chase showed up a year after Nell started and it was a show the Nell liked to go watch a few times each year. After one show the two got to talking and Chase asked Nell if he would want to do dinner some time. The two hit it off and continued to see each other after. Over time Chase convinced Nell to try to get his own fencing stage performance. This led to the arrangement of Nell doing juggling on Sundays and a stage show on Saturdays. After three years of dating Nell and Chase got married. Today they live together in Minneapolis where Nell now works teaching at his own fencing studio and Chase does juggling shows in, mostly, Midwestern America.

It was a Sunday in September and Nell was kitted out in his jester’s outfit juggling for a small crowd at the Renaissance Festival. Currently he was rapidly juggling a group of eight balls off the top of a pickle vendor’s cart. It was a man he knew by the name of Eric. Eric was busily acting as though he was enraged by Nell’s “pesky” behavior. He was yelling about how he and his fine, luxury pickles were not made for such insult. Nell ignored Eric and put on an act of teaching his crowd on the finer points of juggling. Their audience was loving it. After continuing in this manner for a short period of time, Eric picked up his pickle sign and threatened Nell. “If you do not end this abuse of my establishment, I will be forced to beat you with my pickle,” Eric said. Without skipping a beat, Nell pivoted and started bouncing his balls off of Eric’s pickle sign. Eric shouted in rage as Nell discussed the technique he was currently employing.

At this time, Nell spotted Chase standing off to his right. Nell stopped juggling, gathered his balls, and pocketed them. Nell turned to his audience and said, “I do hope we have all learned something here today. Now remember. Practice is key to any skill. Especially juggling.” Nell gave a slight bow to Eric and gave him a “g’day.” Nell scooped up the money his audience left him. He then walked over to Chase and from there they made their way over to the stage where Chase was going to be performing.

Once they reached the stage, Nell started pulling equipment out of Chase’s luggage cases while Chase set up the stage. After a few minutes of silence Chase spoke to Nell. “You know you could join my stage performance, right? You and I both know that you can do far better than bouncing balls off of a pickle cart.” Nell gave him a meaningful look and said, “we’ve discussed this before. I’m not interested in doing juggling on a stage. You convinced on the fencing. That one made a lot of sense. With juggling though, I like to be on the same level as my crowd. It’s fun to mingle and just change up what I’m doing at any given moment. I don’t want to stick to a routine. It would probably still be a lot of fun but I’m simply not interested.” Chase turned to him. “It’s not as routine as you might think. I change up my shows pretty regularly. I get what you’re saying though. I guess it would be a little weird if you were my assistant. Oh! Speaking of new routines, did I tell you about my new one.” Chase turned away to set up a mannequin. Nell pulled out the last of Chase’s pins. He picked one up and tossed it in front of himself. He kicked it so went over his shoulder and behind his back. He flicked his leg back and used the heel of his foot to hit the pin back over his shoulder. He continued to juggle the pin over his shoulder toe to heel as Chase was finishing setting up the mannequin. This was the trick Chase was referring to. Nell had seen him practicing it on Friday. Chase turned back to Nell and saw Nell doing his new trick. Chase rolled his eyes and started to laugh. “See! You would be the perfect addition to my show,” he said exasperated.

Nell stopped juggling the pin and set it down. “It’s never gonna happen dear,” Nell said with a smile. “It looks like you should be pretty well ready to get going here. I have all your equipment pulled. I better get back to my waiting audience. Knock ‘em dead Chase.” Nell hopped over to where Chase was, gave him a quick kiss, and headed back out into the crowds.
