POST OF THE WEEK!![]() Why Mario? As we all know, Mario started as a short little guy names " Jumpman" trying to save a girl known as Pauline, in the arcade game Donkey Kong. He then became known as Mario, the Italian Plumber, but why? As for Mario's look, it all started out as a matter of low quality graphics 16 by 16 px. The mustache was more representable than a mouth, and the mustache formed the image of a large nose. Mario's overalls served as a distinction between the body and the arms, so that you could see the movement and the shape of the human body. The color of the clothes formed a contrast with the black background, and the background in general. The cap was done because the low quality graphics couldn't support hair, so the cap made it easier so they did not have to show motion in the hair, like when he jumped. This could partially explain why Mario looks the way he does. He was formally known as a capender, but his appearance came off as more of a plumber, which gave him his classic phumber look and occupation. Mario is a video game character created by Japanese game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and is the official mascot of Nintendo. If he was made in Japan, then why did they make him Italian? The character, named "Jumpman" by Miyamoto was renamed by Hiroshi Yamauchi due to his physical similarity with Nintendo of America's landlord, Mario Segali. Mario being a very Italian name, was the reason for Mario being known as an Italian plumber. Why did they make him a plumber that shoots fireballs? It is hard to believe such a crazy plot would become such a success. Think about it, a plumber, running around, throwing fireballs, killing turtles knows as "Koopas", and big brown blobs known as "Goombas". We all know Mario is one of the most known videogame characters in the world, if not the most. Mario, is a house hold name for gaming around the world in many countries. I believe that when they first made the Mario Bros game, they didn't expect it to be such a success in the future. As the technology in gaming grew, so the the graphics. Mario kept his appearance, probably due to the success of his earlier games. Mario's newest games consisting of mostly sports game still have the classic characters like Bowser, Princess Peach and Donkey Kong. Also, game like Mario Sunshine and Mario 64, going into the 3D stage, still have sort of the same plot, Bowser, or Boweser son (refering to Mario Sunshing) kid-naps Princess Peach, and again, Mario is off to get her. In my opinion, Mario will never get off the saven' Princess Peach stage. Super Mario 64, 3D!? Mario is now a 3D plumber running around!? No, don't get out your expencive 3D glasses from a kids meal, this is different. Super Mario 64 advanced the plumber into the third dimension and defined the term "3-D platformer". The new Analog Stick made an extent of precise movements in all directions possible. This was a whole new concept to Mario, and it was very successful. Super Mario 64, yes, it did again involve Bowser taking Princess Peach, but now in 3D! This game brought a whole new way to play Mario games, and expect on all of the newer gaming systems to have this form of Mario game. Handheld games still stick to the platform generation though, even though on the DS they brought Super Mario 64 back to life and better than before! Mario Galaxy, an uppcoming game for the Nintendo Wii is taking a whole new platform for Mario, which isn't really one. XD ![]() In Mario Galexy, Mario has the ability to run around planets and jump from planet to planet. This is takinf a whole different approach from the classic Mario games, even the normal 3D ones. It is a Mario game, which seem to be always good, fun and succesfull, so I expect this one to be too, even though it is "different". As for the release, in an after-hours press event at E3 2006, Shigeru Miyamoto said about Super Mario Galaxy, "I don't want to promise anything yet. But if it's not a launch title it will definitely be there within the first six months." In a recent interview with MTV, however, Reggie Fils-Aime (CEO Nintendo of America) said that the game is expected to release sometime between March and December of 2007. A Nintendo of Europe press-release confirmed a release of 2007 for Europe. |
