Rise to Honor I mean I've seen the negative reviews for this game, and I was curious to play it myself... (And the fact that Jet Li movies are pretty cool and he has a new movie coming out! :P) My thoughts of this game are... Controls/Gameplay: The game plays like an intense Hong Kong action flick with bone crunching, white knuckle martial arts and fast-paced, intense gunfights with a litlle bit of stealth... Despite all this the controls... ARE SURPRISINGLY SIMPLE! L-Joystick is to moves, R-Joystick is to attack and those are pretty much the basics(Along with the L and R buttons to block, shoot, counter, and action sequences) No face buttons are used... First off,he martial arts consist the majority of the game, therefore you must learn to fight pretty well to get far in the game. The martial arts is all Jet Li's motion capture so don't expect anything less. The fighting also consists of a cool feature of slow-motioning, cool bone-cruching hits and swift blocks and counters... Another innovation in the fighting is that you can't block all the time because there is a blue block meter which runs out gradually as you block/dodge multiple attacks... When it runs out... POW! You get hit, simple huh... There is even a red adrenaline meter to invoke useful counters and powerful punch and kick combinations... The stealth aspect is forgettable, somewhat easy.(there are a few difficult moments) Now, you can't have a adrenaline charged, Hong Kong action movie without... The gunfight... First off the gunfights are entertaining, with bullets scattering everywhere! YEAH! However it is easy, to kill enemies not only shooting them, but also by shooting "blowuppable" objects. Also, when your adrenaline meter is full, you can perform a "adrenaline dive" which is pretty much "bullet time." On an added note, some boss fights are pretty hard. Graphics: The graphics are mediocre and so are the visuals(Some are pretty cool though)... But the slow-mo fight sequences will impress you! Storyline: You play as the young Kit Yun(Jet Li) a man who works for a "crimelord" type character who eventually is assasinatedby a sniper. Upon his death, he hands you a letter which must be delivered to his daughter in the States by the name of Michelle. However, this is where the plot gets fun. You must fight your way through various locales in San Francisco to find her(There will be MANY people trying to stop you) The storyline will progress as you meet many unforgettable characters and you will reach the end where you will be hit with an unexpected plot twist! Have fun! Other Factors: The voice acting is great... Jet Li's voice and the numerous other Chinese voice actors suit the Hong Kong feel like a glove... You even have the option of watching the Hong Kong chapters in Cantonese(Eng. Subtitles) while the San Francisco chapters are all English... The music at some scenes is amazing, the violin really add a touch of class while pulling at your heartstrings. Another cool thing is the "Making of" video, it goes into details about Sony's Rise to Honor project and Jet Li's enthusiasm for this game! There are also even scenes where Jet Li shows off some moves as game characters! Conclusion: The game got repetitive at points and the story is nothing new... However the Hong Kong movie feel is portrayed beautifully by giving the gamer nothing less than intense action(It's short though...)... This is no way Game of the Year material, but it will give you an adrenaline charged ride from beginning to end! Rating: 7.0 out of 10.0(It's far from perfect, but it deserve a little bit more credit...) Rise to Honor(Playstation2): Movies Rise to Honor(Playstation2): Screenshots Review by: Seventh_Force |

Played it in the store and I like it. The boss fights were a bit tough, but your right. The voice acting was top notch. Decent game for the budget price of $19.99 or less. |

The game is exceedingly difficult near the end of the game. I thought it was a very fun beat them up title that got me entertained. I did like it when you can change the skin of Jet li into Wong Fei Hong a role he played in a famous chinese movie. For those that do not know it is him with the shaved front half of the head and long traditional que tail. Here is a clip of a battle in "Once Upon a time in China" for those that do not know. Chinese movie of Jet Li is way bomb compared to the American version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VQKBCh218w |

I enjoyed it, but it gets far too difficult later on, especially when enemies can block in the middle of combos and you cannot. |

I pawned it a few years ago, and looking back, I'm not sure of that was the best decision. I got pretty far into the games, but things became so chaotic at parts that the controller seemed to not want to respond to what and where I wanted it to go, thanks to the layout. But... if others like it more, more power to them. I like the idea of the game, and where it was headed... maybe down the line a second attempt will emerge with a little better execution. |
