I have to say, this is an interesting game. Made by Square-Enix, it is an anime inspired game, much like the .hack series. This game is about two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric who are searching for the "Philosopher's Stone" to regain there original body's. Edward has a cybornetic right arm and left leg, while his brother alphonse is nothing more then a soul bound to an animated suit of armor. The gameplay is kinda like a 3D version of Ys that larry loves so much. It has a real time battle system, so you don't transition to battles like in the FF or SaGa series. You can just, transmute objects into other things using alchemy, i'll explain later. The bosses can be a pain in the ass though, I hated facing the alchemy brothers, basically that was a 4-in-one boss fight, you had to kill the three brothers inorder to stop there own suit of armor for killing you. The controls are pretty basic, one button for each kinda action, one button to jump, one to dodge attacks, one to attack/open chests, another to pick-up weapons or use stationary objects such as gattling guns or cannons, and one button to do alchemy, such as transforming a crate into a spear or a cannon, or turning a park bench into a clone of yourself, there are lots of different things you can transmute objects into. I myself love using the rubber mallet, while it does little damage you can keep whacking the person for an infinite ammount of times if your good, normally it's 2 or three hits and they fall down, I like using the mallet because the higher combos you get, the larger ammount of bonus experience you get. Controls get a 9.5/10 out of me. The graphics are pretty good, especially when you use alchemy, they show cool effects and there are cutscenes that look like they were from the anime, which they probably were, or else they were made specifially for the game. then there are cutscene's that happen when yuou use alchemy to advance the story, such as when you change a train engine into a giant cannon to clear your path, or turn a car into a large set of stairs. The in game graphics are good also, there are fire effects, and ice that us summoned using alchemy stays on the ground till either melted or shattered. Also the facial expessions during dialogs are pretty damn good too. But I think this game would have benifited more if the characters were cel-shaded instead of just cg because it's roots is in anime, and it would have been more appropriate, I'll give graphics 8/10. Music and sounds, hmmm, well the music was pretty good, as i believe the same person who did trhe music for the anime did it for the game too, but im not to sure, haven't seen the anime. Sound effects seemed to be just right, wether it's a cannon shooting, a mine going off, or just whacking an enemy with a weapon, they are pretty realistic. The voices were also believeable, I mean the voices seemed to go well with the characters, except alphonse's, I mean first time I heard him talk i was laughing my ass off. I mean here's a large suit of armor, and a little kid's voice is coming out of it. sounds - 9/10 Overall I think this game was pretty under-rated when it came out,for a square game this one didn't seem popular, I don't see why, it has a good story, I mean when i first played it I couldn't put the game down for over 5 hours. The graphics are good, it's a good title, I'm surprised it's not more popular. I'd say this was another solid game by square, but you'r all entitled to your own opinions, dont rush out and get it just cause i say so, watch the anime first if you want, get a feel for it and if you like it, get the game. also this game has very funny moments, I was laughing a lot while playing through the game. Also I liked the fact that if Alphonse died, you can just use alchemy to bring him back because all he is is a giant suit of armor. I give the game a 9/10. |

yeah, in each area i try to use alchemy on everything it'll let me do, you'd be surprised how many items i get, because some of the things that i mentioned before, like the clone, can be transmuted into items once there usefullness is through,i found at least 4 things i can change into items when they are all used. also when you pick up carious items like the wind element, or fire element, you can use those items in conjunction with alchemy to inhance your weapons even more. needless to say i'll never run out of healing items cause i transmute as many things as i can into items, and they are always healing items. Also a second game is already in the works, so it must have been more popular then people are letting on. |
