Today is Pearl Harbor Day.

I read all my online news dources this morning, and not one mention of this event that so affected my parents and my generation.

Dad and Mom had only been marries for a mont and a day. As the story goes, my Grandmother [ who was visiting] woke mom and dad up that Sunday morning when she had heard the news broadcast on the radio.

Dad was a young soldier, just like the ones we see heading off to Iraq. He was just marries and only had a few months left to finsish his hitvh in the army. He was stationed at Ft. Lewis, in Washington State, and he and mom had a rented house in Olympia.
That all changed that early Sunday morning. All military personel was ordered to report to their duty stations. Dad jumped up while Grandma fixed a hurried breakfast. His un it shipped out that night to patrol and set up a defensive position on a Pacific ocean beach.

#0 days later, my mom road a bus all day and night, so she could visit my dad at this remote beach area. They only were able to spend the weekend together, but the result of that time resulted in my older sister .

Mom and dad never saw each other again for three and a half years. Mom still has a cedar chest that holds all the letters they exchanged during this time. They are private letters-- and none of us children have ever had a glimpse.

Dad passed on in 1990. And over the years, most of his comrads in that great war have also joined him--layed to rest in cemetaries across the land. With each passing year fewer and fewer attend the Veterans Day parades--or pause to salute these fallen soldies from a war that ended nearly 60 years ago.

But I still remeber. My dad and all my Uncles and two Aunts served in the military during that war. I had one uncle land at Normandy, and was injured thier. My dad suffered throughout his life with malaria , hearing loss and a bad back from in juries in the Philipeans.

And now--not even a mention of this aniversary day--that started World War 2 for our country--in any of the newspapers this morning.

Dad, I salute you and your comrads.

In memory and prayer

Mike, My wife and I remember, we both lost an uncle in that war. That generation of men and women were great Men and Women indeed.
