The habit of the Christians during the life of the apostles of Jesus was to assembly on the first day of the week for the communion service and while gathered they would sing, pray, fellowship, share their offerings, and teach and study the Scriptures. They were taught by the apostles not to neglect their assembling together, as some were doing, but to encourage each often as the day neared. The faithful did as instructed. Today Christians still gather together on the first day of the week but it mostly it is not for the communion. They gather to fellowship, sing, study church doctrine, share their offerings, pray. I have visited many churches over the years and know whereof I speak. Yes I have been to Lutheran services also. Some Churches have communion weekly, some monthly , some quarterly, some bi-annually, some yearly. When I ask the leaders about their lack of weekly observance the most often answer I get is that it becomes to common, I ask them if it becomes to common for them to go home to their wives each night. Some say we have never done it that way. Some say this is the way we have always done it. The non-denominations independent Christian Churches and the Churches of Christ say that we are following the example of the Christians who lived during the life of the apostles of Jesus. When one makes an unprejudiced study of the Scriptures and observes the life and practice of the Christians mentioned therein it is readily seen that the weekly observance of the Lord's Supper, i.e. Communion was practiced each Sunday. Sunday is the day that Jesus rose from the dead. Sunday is the day that the Christians gathered together to remember Him by keeping His memorial. |
