Okay! An undefined string has an undefined amount of length! If you define the string, I'll define its length.

Once upon a time in China a girl called Su-Ling had a piece of string. This was no ordinary piece of string, for it was braided with red and golden strands of the finest silk, and was given to Su-Ling by her grandmother. This piece of string was indeed special to Su-Ling, and she thought an item so worthy of appreciation should be given a name. Su-Ling named the string "Hau Long". Now Hau Long became a constant companion in the pocket of Su-Ling's sarong, and was a comfort to her in times of stress and was fun to have around and rub even during good times. Whenever Su-Ling got hurt or was teased, she would shrug it off and say, "I'll just have a talk with my friend, Hau Long." Now to everyone except Su-Ling, this appeared somewhat strange, since it was a rather small village in the far reaches of northern China, where everybody knew everybody else. And nobody had ever heard of "Hau Long." Finally, after some talk went about town, Su-Ling's mother asked her, "Su Ling, who is this Hau Long that you have been talking to?

"Oh!" Su-Ling laughed. "Hau Long is the piece of string that Grandmother gave me!"

To which her mother asked, "How long is a piece of string?!?"

Steven, Agree, that Leo has a real gift. You need to exercise it more Leo.

Jack, In answer to your question, The length is indeterminable (at this time) in that the string is really a loop and is constantly vibrating.

From Nova's website: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/glossary.html

string: fundamental one-dimensional object that is the essential ingredient in string theory.
string theory: unified theory of the universe postulating that fundamental ingredients of nature are not zero-dimensional point particles but tiny one-dimensional filaments called strings. String theory harmoniously unites quantum mechanics and general relativity, the previously known laws of the small and the large, that are otherwise incompatible. Often short for superstring theory.

Note: This was not meant to be a serious answer, just having some fun. The above definition was the first thing that came to mind after reading your Thread,
