No. 1, Ithaca, N.Y. "attractive town with lots of activitues and education is high, but lots of snow and precipitation" •No. 2, Bend, Ore. "Artsy resort community in the high Oregon desert" but high cost of living and difficult 160-mile drive (especially in winter) to Portland. •No. 3, Mount Vernon-Anacortes, Wash. "Area of uncommon beauty" along Puget Sound but weak economy and high housing costs. •No. 4, Logan, Utah. "Attractive college town" and center of Mormon culture and history, but a 75-mile drive to Salt Lake City. •No. 5, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. "Beautiful mountain setting" only 20 miles east of Spokane, but "growth and crowding are having an impact." •No. 6, Prescott, Ariz. "Clean, quiet city with an Old West feel." •No. 7, Vero Beach, Fla. "Upscale beach community" but with a high cost of living by Florida standards. •No. 8, Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford, Va. "Small-town feel and college-town amenities in mountain setting." •No. 9, Brunswick, Ga. Historic port town, retirement favorite but expensive. •No. 10, Idaho Falls, Idaho. Gateway to Yellowstone Park and Grand Tetons, but town is "nondescript" without "much to do." At the bottom? Hinesville, Ga.; Madera, Calif.; Longview, Wash.; Hanford, Calif.; and El Centro, Calif. |

I found it interesting that few of these cities were in the bible belt and none in the central US |

Surprised to see Mt Vernon there. It really does not have much to offer. Not a particularly attractive town, bisected by I-5. Bellingham, 30 miles to the north is much nicer. Anacortes is nice, though. I'm suprised they did not include Pt Roberts, surrounded by ocean on 3 sides. It's basically a suburb of Vancouver, BC although it's in Wash. state |

•No. 6, Prescott, Ariz. "Clean, quiet city with an Old West feel." Got to go along with that one OP. Would move there in a heart beat if it was possible. Very nice town... |

I'm surprised that they are paired as well; Anacortes is on the ocean, Mt Vernon is just a small town on I-5 with some farm land around it. Plus they are 25 miles or so apart! Sedro Wooley, which is even closer to Mt Vernon (but the other way) is far nicer. Quite small (almost like the town near the Walton's), but nice. But having been to both Anacortes and Coeur D'Alene, I cant argue with THOSE selections..... gorgeous places, in their own rights. |

I'm not arguing with any of their choices as I have no idea about most of the cities listed. I just found it interesting that with the exception of one or two most of them are in coastal or what would be considered liberal states. Eirc, the list is easy to get, just do a google for top 10 cities to live. |
