World Vision pulls out of Iraq

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- World Vision, a Christian relief agency with operations in some of the world’s riskiest areas, has pulled out of Iraq after the shooting death of one of its Iraqi workers.
“It’s just too dangerous,” spokesman Dean Owen said Friday.

At its height, Federal Way-based World Vision had between 50 and 75 workers providing supplies to displaced and poor families, and helping to rebuild hospitals and schools. Owen said that included around 40 Iraqi nationals and a varying number of expatriates. No Americans were ever sent to Iraq for World Vision.

The organization had been reducing staff since the beginning of the year. But the final decision to evacuate came several weeks ago, when Owen said the Iraqi operations manager for World Vision’s office in Mosul was shot point-blank in a restaurant.

The group now has about five workers in Amman, Jordan, monitoring the Iraqi situation as best they can.

Owen said the decision was made before the apparent murder of Margaret Hassan. The longtime director for the aid group CARE in Iraq was abducted in Baghdad last month and is now believed dead.

The nonprofit World Vision has about 22,000 workers in nearly 100 countries.

It is sad when you see these terrorists killing people who offer aid. I wonder if they realize that they have wounded their people more than helped.

Times like that just don't make any sense. Here these people are there to help and those animals kill them. All they want to do is create fear in the area. They don't have respect for anyone or anything. Wish we could get them all in one area and turn it into a sand parking lot.

Before we get too worked up over Iraq we should look to our own country.

You may find it hard to believe, but there are plenty of places right here in the good old U.S.A. where it isn't safe to go especially for a woman alone.

Zones of hatred and evil permeate several of our large cities.

I would hardly compare Iraq to the USA.Overall crime has gone down considerably in the last 10 years in the USA.The rate of violent crime has dropped by about one-third since the early 1990s, when urban areas were awash in gang wars and crack cocaine. Despite the uptick last year, the murder rate is down 37 percent since 1994.Heres the 2003 FBI stats:

The situation in Iraq is gonna take some time.Too bad the World can't unite and nip this in the bud sooner.Too many SOB's with self interests in mind and just plain cowards.
