Say OP! You haven't told us about yummy meals here lately! So what's on that Thanksgiving menu? How about some of the rest of y'all? Do you do some special side dishes? And just who cooks the turkey at your house? Does your Mr help with the cooking? Grasshopper has always helped me. And God Bless him he always helps me clean up too! |

That reminds me of Hee Haw when they'd all ask "Hey Grandpa, what's for dinner?!" Grandpa would rattle off a bunch of southern food dishes that I didn't understand (I was growing up in Los Angeles at the time, and didn't know anyone really ate pigs feet) and then everyone would yell, "Yum Yum!" Does anyone else remember that? |

Oh yes I remember it. We talked about it on the old fire. I always got a kick out of the old HeeHaw show. It was good clean fun. Not much of that on the tube now days. |

I have cooked Thanksgiving dinner for the Bride and family for 40 years and do the dishes also now that the girls are gone. My giblet dressing is to die for and the gravy is darn good also. We have been going to visit one or the other of the Brides sisters in Texas one year and Montana the next for the last 8 years. The sister in Montana is widowed so I wind up doing the bird up there as well. This will be the first time in eight years that we will be staying home. Got a cold/flu bug the last two times flying and it is just too long of a recovery at our age. We have an invite for Thanksgiving dinner at our second oldest daughter's house and looking forward not to have to fix that ole bird this year. One nice thing about cooking your own bird is that you have lots of left overs and love making turkey soup..... |

Stacy, Did I see pecan pie there? I remeber as a child having to eat holiday meals with all the cousins and siblings while the adults sat at the extended dining table [with three leafs]. My mom was the youngest in her family, being 21 years younger than Uncle Ormal[the senior Uncle. So--there were many, many old folks pulled up to the table. Turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, yams, fresh baked buns, pies----wow! Later on in life, my sister Carolyn would make up the shrimp salad[that she is famous for]. I won't be spending Thanksgiving back home , but I sure have some fond memories. I thank "GOD" that I have some things to be thankful for. And outside of the family and friends that gather for Thanksgiving dinner, I never want to forget just what the meaning of the holiday is for. Fr. Mike |

Come on over. We always have tons! Leftovers are the best Mike, yup Pecan pie, hubby's favorite, I had never made one, or really eaten one before I met him. But he loved them, and I loved him so I tried makingone, and he claims they are the best. So I have to make at least two every holiday for him! It is the least I can do considering what he does for me! |

It seems I missed this in my absence last week. my apologies. What's for turkey day Dinner? Well of course #1 is turkey, deep fried in peanut oil and injected with a southwest marinade. Which yours truly will prepare. We will have a spiral cut ham baked to prerfection with a honey and brown sugar glaze which will be baked by my lovely bride. There will be green bean casserole topped with fried leeks A sweet potato casserole with bananas instead of marshmallow topping. Prepared with a little cinnamon and brown sugar, mmmmm good. There will be garlic mashed taters with skin on and topped with grated sharp cheddar cheese and chives. I'm sure somewhere on the table will be a big pan of baked beans topped with some bacon strips. Of course a big pan or two of homemade dressing. One with lots of sage and one without. and to top all the courses will be a nice big bowl of giblet gravy homemade dinner rolls from my grandmas old family recipe that melt in your mouth. Lots of real butter and home canned preserves of cherry, blackberry and peach. There will be pies of pumpkin, pecan, chocolate, lemon and cherry that I know of and I am sure more will show up. There will be cakes and goodies of all types. My sister will likely bring some roasted walnuts with cinnamon and sugar coating. Sweet tea and coffee and soda pop for all. What are you having? |

There's only going to be 4 of us this year, so not a whole lot of cooking going on. We will however, have turkery breast, potato casserole, scalloped corn, cranberry sauce, candied yams, stuffing, muffins and lastly, pecan pie. |

We will be having Roasted Turkey...we soak it in a brine 12 hours then roast it in a Nesco Air Bake oven. Lots of Mushroom dressing. Sour cream garlic mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, corn, sweet potatoes with oranges casserole, yummy Waldorf Salad, crannberry sauce, and home made rolls or bread. And Pumpkin pie and apple pie. Ya got my interest up with the sweet potato and banana dish you talked about. Wouldn't want to share that recipe would ya?? As a kid I wouldn't touch my mother's sweet potato casserole. Somewhere along the way I started to just love those things though! Don't think I have ever had them with banana....love bananas too. You know what we need to do after the big Turkey Day is talk about good recipes for turkey leftovers. We love to take sliced turkey, slap it on home made bread, slather on some mayo and pile on crannberry/orange relish. |

Tenn T quote: Ya got my interest up with the sweet potato and banana dish you talked about. Wouldn't want to share that recipe would ya?? As a kid I wouldn't touch my mother's sweet potato casserole. Somewhere along the way I started to just love those things though! Don't think I have ever had them with banana....love bananas too Just make it like you normally would. At the stage where you would usually add the marshmallows take one or two bananas depending on size of casserole and dice them into mini marshmallow size pieces. Spread them on top and take a quarter cup of brwon sugar and a little cinnamon and sprinkle over. Place under the broiler just long enough to get a good crust and you'll never go back to marshmallows for topping. Add the fact if you watch your calories and saturated fat the bananas will reduce both significantly. |

Thank you OP! I am going to try the banana topping. I am not a big marshmallow fan, and the lower calorie and saturated fat would be a good thing! Oh my that sounded like Martha Stewart.........wonder if Martha is cooking a "jail bird" this year? Hey Martha.....there ya go, you can create a new dish and I have named it for you! |

Also on the green bean casserole if you will sustitute deep fried shredded leeks for the canned shoestring onions you can lower the sat. fat and calories by about 1/3. |
