The sexual under/over(?)tone is back. Not that it was necessarily gone, but it's back at the full strength it was in season 1. por ejemplo: -> Danny's interrogation. There's Alex, saying "sexy bottled blonde boom boom girl" , and Bobby: "I'll bet this girl gave you quite a ride..." As he stands and bends over the table. ![]() ![]() ![]() This could just be mainly caused by remnants of a pseudo-traumatizing experience I had in the theater as a teenager during the movie Cold Mountain, in which a woman(a prostitute, probably) bends over a table and invites the main character to "ride her like a horse" --uhh, he didn't, but that didn't stop us from seeing a lot of her surface area. (my mom was MORTIFIED that she took me and my (then boyfriend, now husband) to see it when we were 16!! eek!), BUT (no pun intended ), I find this scene sexual. could totally be because it reminds me of Cold Mountain, tho. idk. -> there's the theme of withheld sex, B: "the girl played keepaway for 2 years - an ordinary man would be frustrated, angry..." Carver: "he's not an ordinary man, he's a murderer." Bobby: "he's a child." does this do anything for the horizontal theory?? just wonderin'. I don't really need to conclude for myself. -> Big Louis' interrogation: Bobby, reading out his past charges: "...lewdness..." Alex: "ooooooooh" -> The Hebrew word for woman was on the pizza box. Bobby translates. Alex: "figures you'd know that." --here she makes the most hilarious face. I didn't make stills because that wouldn't have even done it justice. it was hilarious. she scratches her chin, and makes a totally juvenile expression imho. totally trying to get us viewers to get a certain "lady's man" impression of him. idk if I'm totally buying it, just knowing Bobby. but so far, ignoring everything that comes AFTER this one, it could kinda appear that way... -> and then of course there's the whole stripper theme of the ep. I LOVE when they're at the club and they walk thru the shiny ribbon curtain, and Bobby gets all tangled up in it... so cute. so them. Alex just struts on through, smooth as silk. Bobby's the clumsy one. there is an interesting scene near the beginning of the ep, where Alex goes over to B's side of the desk and leans in really close over some paperwork, discussing some lead. The camera goes to Deakins for an extra beat, and he's just kinda like, staring at them. I wonder if he's thinkin', "proximity" just like we do! one can hope  Sandi's "why buy the cow when you get the milk for free" comment, and Bobby's reaction. love it. Although I think it would have been nice to see Alex react this way instead of Bobby. yeah yeah he's the sensitive one. alright we get it. tis a cute reaction though. I found this interesting. Mrs. Sussman: "you don't start fresh by keeping secrets." Bobby: "is that what they were doing? they were starting fresh?" and he does this. ![]() ... a little foreshadowing, perhaps? probably just my artistic brain. Is that giving them too much credit to think that they may have planned this scene to be symbolic in reference to the Alex/Joe picture later on? Probably. Since we were just discussing that recently, it jumped to my mind. The two pictures have some similarities, and BA seem to have this little "trust" thing going on. (imho it's been blown out of proportion, but that's for a different thread )[spoil]I can picture, in season 10, Bobby in Alex' house saying "is that what we're doing? starting fresh?!" and going to the bedroom, grabbing the wed pic and holding it up to her. Of course near the end of the 8 eps at some point she puts it away. I'm so dramatic  , sorry if you guys think I'm insensitive to speculate about them possibly arguing like that. I'm not saying I'd necessarily like it. Just brainstormin'! [/spoil]

here's the thing: not every fan/viewer thinks vdo is 'hot.' in fact, lots of people think he's downright icky. i know, i know, you ardent fans just don't get this. but. EF, you had a traumatic experience? did someone say, 'Carl Stargher'??? i work in the 'sexualized violence' world, and that movie scared me. i couldn't sleep for a week. it was worse than 'blue velvet.' so so so disturbing. never mind me. i'd say the old man is a pretty 'average' viewer. the old man sees Goren as a cerebral "Holmes" type, with a healthy dose of a strong potential for "Dexter" thrown in, just to keep things interesting. neither of these characters could be called 'sexual' beings. this type of thing - the comment in 'shandeh' - keeps Goren strongly 'sexualized,' quite deliberately too, it seems. and having physical and often 'bawdy' Eames be the one making the comments keeps us aware that she is aware that her strange partner is also 'a hound dog', as it were. she even calls him a dog in 'badge' with a big stupid smile on her face. this is something (i've mentioned before but i do like to repeat myself again and again and again and again) that old man appreciates about him. old man does his best (a la Matthew McConaughey in Dazed & Confused) "Awl raht, awl raht, awl raht!"' every time the creepy guy checks a woman out. i think he finds it comforting. you know, that he's this extraordinary man with a very average weakness. considering he's a 'creepy guy,' they could have given him an icky quirk, like Mulder and his thing for porn. Alex comes up with the best expressions! LOL  ETA: Apparently I was writing this while Unicorn was posting the above (great minds LOL) Hubby was watching "Cold Mountain" on TV and I tuned in somewhere in the middle and saw a scene with a mom (Renee Z ?) being kept from her cold, crying baby and THAT bothered me so much I couldn't stay or even think about watching it again. Why is it that disturbing movies get so many awards? Oh well. Not the time or place.
When Bobby figured out that Sandi and Danny hadn't "sealed the deal" he speculated about her excuses..."did she say she had cramps?" IDK why but I always find that so funny and laugh like crazy! (I have a really weird sense of humor!)
I LOVE the deleted scene in the season 2 DVD where [spoil]Alex and Bobby are undercover in a diner and Alex, as a waitress, spills coffee on Bobby yada yada yada Bobby arrests Big Louis and says "Whose Pants are Wet now Big Guy" [/spoil]
I think they were trying to portray Bobby as a charmer in the first couple of years. (Denise, Irene, flirting...)
You know, I don't think they plan that far ahead. I remember reading an interview with KE when Warren Leight became the showrunner (6th or 7th season?) and she said she reminded him that Eames was a widow and he decided to use that. Rene Balcer had it understood as character background but never planned to address it on the show. However they definitely go back and use old stories in new writing! <_< Beautiful Pics BTW! |

I can see why they're doing this "charmer" thing, uni. thanks for the explanation! as for the Shandeh deleted scene skittles brought up.. I made caps and was gonna transcribe the whole thing for you guys... but figured I'd leave it for a later time because I really need to move forward in the series. So sometime soon! yeah, the cramps thing is kinda funny. They sure test this guy early on as an actor. season 1 he's saying "wee wee" a whole buncha times, asking phantom Erica about her menstruation, and then this. kinda feel for the dude. imagine folks just tuning in at that moment... oh the perils of showbiz yes, the baby scene in Cold Mountain was indeed traumatizing. (that was Natalie Portman). a LOT about that movie was disturbing. I still don't know if I'd watch it again, or whether or not I even liked it. it's been quite a few years, maybe my opinion would change if I saw it again. |

I loved the movie Cold Mountain. I went and got the book (by Charles Frazier) soon after and it's an outstanding novel of the "can't put down" variety. I've always liked the actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman and I thought he was incredible in this. I thought pretty much everyone was incredible in this. Cold Mountain was the movie that got me on the Renee Zellweger love train. She deserved her oscar. I agree with you though that it's tough to watch some scenes, but that fact just cements how compelling the storytelling is. Personally I think it's a masterpiece of a movie. |

You're right. Those hard-to-watch scenes I guess really reach into our emotions and that is what makes a great movie. I'm just a wimp. Hey EF! I would love to see the deleted scene caps. I wish I knew how. Forgot to mention before, I thought Linda Lavin was very good in her role as the cold hearted mother-in-law! |

oh, TOOOOTALLY! In the aria where she's being arrested and she absolutely BARKS at Danny to "do something!!!!" it's a pretty crazy transformation. totally turns from a kind old lady to a monster. amazing. as for the deleted scene, I'll see what I can do

Well, just for the record, I am definately one of those folks that think VDO is the sexiest man alive EVERY year. I think he's stunning. Sure, Bobby was a bit of a dog in the beginning but I don't see that they really backed off of that later on. He oggles the dominatrix in 'Proud Flesh" and eyeballs the lizard in 'smile' but plenty of woman have given Bobby the once over. A 6' 4" stunner like him is bound to turn more than a few heads and I can see clearly that his "friend and partner" takes notice and sometime even gets a bit jealous, "Vancany" anyone? |

i have no opinion about the big guy's sexual desirability. i watch for the pair of them, being sexy because they're Goren and Eames. i want to bring up the 'comparison to Eames' thing again ... the bottle blonde stripper is named 'Sandi' (with an i) which is a nickname for Alexandra. blonde, little nosed, about the same size (except for the obvious caboose difference. Sandi has a magnificent ... well, she'd give J.Lo a run for her million dollar insurance policy on that particular body part.) but, she's otherwise a ... what is she? a 'ho'??? she hasn't been intimate with Danny. is she a clever opportunist? has she actually done anything 'wrong'??? it isn't her fault that Danny Sussman is a dumb guy. (Sussman. 'to suss things out'?? he is the opposite of a susser. he doesn't appear to think about anything at all. dumb.) she's looking out for her family, for her kids. like Mrs. Sussman would have. idk what i think about this, if anything. it's not my fav. episode. but speaking of ... i wonder why we skipped over 'Tomorrow' and 'The Pilgrim'??? (clearing throat) 'tomorrow' is one of my all-time fav episodes. i couldn't say 'why' except that the young woman who plays Hannah -- her performance is amazing. the aria takes my breath away. and, there's the corn niblets on the counter, the peas on the floor, and another explanation about why Bobby plays with his food in Tates. and, considering our religion discussions ... 'the pilgrim' deals with somewhat-relevant subject matter. this one must have cost a friggin' fortune to make. did they actually shoot an episode at a Veteran's Day parade in NYC? or have they filled the streets with paid extras in uniform? either way ... cha-ching. Eames doesn't shoot Goren. she's right there. she might have been able to make the shot. but she hesitates. she doesn't risk hitting her partner, even though they might be blown to smithereens at any moment. and they look really adorable in matching Desert Storm uniforms. ship! |

I can totally see the Sandi/Alex parallel. I thought of it instantly when they first meet her and Bobby's lookin her up and down, up and down and telling her outright how "toned... flexible.." she is. I was like, "remind you of someone, big guy?" only goes to reinforce the fact that, yes, he's noticed Alex in that way.
simply because my time crunch at this time won't allow me to do an in-depth analysis of every single one, at least this time around. I mean, I'm making extensive notes and stuff on every ep, but unless there's something I really feel compelled to point out, or something overtly shippy, I skip discussing it with ya'all for now. That's not to mitigate the episodes' value, at all. I really like "Tomorrow" as well. That actress blows me away. The Pilgrim already has a thread of its own, I read through it and didn't feel I had anything more to add at this time that wasn't already there. |

I once read somewhere that someone thought one of VDO's sexiest LOCI scenes was when he straddled the bench in "Tomorrow" to talk to or handcuff one of the sisters. Yeah, this is what I remember. |

Callie, I too think VDO is incredibly sexy, as well as being a fantastic actor. It doesn't matter to me what size he is, I can't take my eyes off him when he's on the screen. |

My girlfriend is like those of you who are on the "sexy no matter what" VDO love train. It's the way I am about Kathryn Erbe. I'm finding that though she's considerably older than I am, (and she always has been, LOL) she's just getting better and better looking. She had her stunning youthful days when she was a dreamy sexpot honey, but now she's taken on a new aura. There's a new layer of - a different kind - of sexiness. I like her openness and she's... admirable, and wise now too. |
