okay you guys. This is some heavy stuff right here. I held off for a couple days to post about this one, and I'm glad I did. I rewrote my notes this morning so they were easier to read while I didn't have access to the computer and I'm glad I did that too: It hit me that this the shippiest episode to date (going thru the series chronologically)!!! somehow the act of re-writing it made it all mesh in my mind and it clicked. the sub-text, the parallels. This one is truly exquisite (if in fact the parallels I see aren't my imagination, which is certainly possible), and I give many props to the team of very talented and diverse artists behind it. (that goes for most of the eps, but still.) absolutely loooooaaaded. oh my, where to begin  let us start with this: they are in order. ![]() ![]() are you seeing what I'm seeing? when added together with all the fleeting glances and soft touches between Eames and Carver thus far, it would seem as though there may be a little bit of attraction there. which is yucky. because he's married. doesn't stop some ppl tho. I'm not sure if it's mutual or exactly what the dynamic there is. but, do you think they look a little cozy, especially in the last photo?? I do! Eames isn't the only one who can be territorial/protective of her partner. I'm interpreting Bobby's plop down on the center of the table (almost between them) as the equivalent of Eames' "step in between" Bobby and Nicole in the apartment a mere one episode ago. almost like he's invading on their private moment.I can't believe I've missed so much last time I went through this season!! This could be only because of the situation at hand, C/E's proximity. but, another thought I'm having is that Goren waited to "make the moves" on Alex until he got a feeling that she was alright with it/returned those feelings, which was confirmed to him when she stepped between him and Nicole. just a thought. I encourage those of you who have the means/opportunity to watch this ep again. also, this may be going out on a limb imagination wise, but pay special close attention to the dialogue in this scene also. possible intentional parallel. ok next. the "mimicking the rich guy" scene. frickin' hilarious!! I always forget about this till about halfway through the scene, and then rewind, here are some stills for your comical pleasure: ![]() ![]() ![]() seems utterly ridiculous enough in stills, but somehow he does it subtly enough that the dude doesn't notice - and some viewers I guess haha! but notice where his eyes are for most of the time...! MAJOR flirting. add this to "oh, no, pleeease! my partner loves rumor & innuendo!" he has fallen for her. and is puttin the moooves on now. then there is another "Carver kept in the dark" scenario. (all this in one ep! whew!) Eames looks slightly regretful and sympathetic about it. and Carver is CLEARLY only mad at Bobby. but in the end, all she has to say is: "he'll get over it." a declaration of her choice?? we'll see what the following eps bring... there are two really good deleted scenes, one showing Bobby planting the idea in Peter Bonham's mind to kinda flaunt the fact that he's got his wife pinned in her face, and the other is a scene between Peter and Carver in Carver's office. in the latter, I believe there is some sub-text as well. I believe Peter's lines are playing the part of Goren's thoughts. anyone else have the DVD's volunteer to elaborate?? I've already spent half a day on this thing, man... then there's also the whole "everyone liking Linda better" theme. not sure if there's anything to that though. quick question: between arresting Linda Bonham and interrogating her at MCS, Goren and Eames change clothes. Did they have here there all night? I guess she kinda looks like she's spent the night in jail. just outta curiosity. E2A: I didn't quote this into the Carver/Eames thread because it would be three posts from moi in a row, but if we're gonna talk strictly carver/eames we should hop on over there! |

Absolutely LOVE the pics of Goren mimicing the other actor LOL. VDO is such a truly amazing actor, no matter what show/movie he is acting in. The images (and idea) of Carver so close to Eames is just so wrong. I have always liked this episode, so I am happily off to watch again :-) Love Goren plonking himself down on the table, so close to Carver and Eames, establishing his position. |

i don't know what i think about the prison interview scene. there is nothing (NOTHING) in the character of Alex Eames to suggest that she would welcome the advances of a married man. your observation about Goren depositing himself between them is most excellent, tho'. (can't recall which ep, but he crowds her and she moves purposefully away from him ... shippers?) i DO very much love your assessment of the final lines, EF. i felt like something else was going on there ... for what it's worth, for me, the main theme of this entire episode is about men being 'man' enough to deal with having a partner / wife who is better at the job. |

thanks for the input, you guys! (I must admit I was quite proud of this one )
I agree. which is why it seems sort of weird, but I suppose could be explained by the fact that it's most likely a one-sided thing. Maybe she hasn't noticed but Goren has?? (they have tried to establish him as the "sensetive" one, and her as the more "just-business" one). idk. the husband here says the stills of Carver/Eames look completely platonic. but he's a man's man. They don't always notice this stuff. uni, I'll make sure to tell you guys when I come across the one where she distances herself from Carver, but haven't seen it yet.
of course it's worth something! A whole lot!! hmmmmm. this is good. do you think this relates to the ep title? if so, how so? I almost wanna watch this one again before I move on!! but alas, I'll never make it thru if I do that... BA FOREVER!! |

I'm loving the insight. I think Eames doesn't like Carver and hasn't for a long time. I think that in S1, in Phantom, the look that Goren and Eames exchanged when Carver flirted with that embassy woman was telling. IMHSO, it was telling either that they admired his ability to schmooze information out of someone... or they thought it was yucky for the reasons stated above. I think they respect his abilities and his position of course, but they've been united against him several times already by now. Even looking at these pictures, I keep thinking back to all the times they were upset with him. I've got to vote for the 'one sided' aspect to this, if indeed this posturing is for real. BTW, I endorse unicorn's assessment of the theme. It's not just the professional besting that is intolerable, some guys just can't stand being 'beaten by a girl' in any way. |

i agree with Paulie, and the scene in Phantom is a good example of 'why' i don't get a sense that Eames and Carver could be ... you know. plus, i'm pretty sure that Carver is set up to be 'in opposition' to Goren, on a character level. Carver represents the conservative American male, Goren is liberal. it makes for interesting debates about morals and ethics. so, if Bobby is everything we love about him - sensitive, genuinely NOT envious of or threatened by his partner, truly aware of the difficulties encountered by women in the professional workforce and truly supportive, not sexist ... can we 'assume' that Carver (by default?) is the opposite? does he seem like the kind of man who would be happy to be married to a woman who was a better lawyer than he is? or, would he be threatened by that? (i've imagined that Carver is married to an exquisitely beautiful but 'underemployed' stay-home mother-wife. someone who looks good at church on Sunday morning. am i being unfair? )the pun in the title is an interesting question, EF. (the entire expression is: "a good offense is the best defense" - something that Sun Tzu wrote in 'the art of war' i think. tho', he likely didn't phrase it quite like that. layers of meanings for law enforcement types ...)
here's what i'm thinking: Alex Eames is the best cop in her squad. this is stated explicitly by Danny Ross in 'lady's man'. not all men could handle being her partner. actually, very few men could handle it. lots of men (most?) would be (are) really threatened by her. i see a recurrent theme throughout loci, suggesting that other people (mainly men) see her as a somewhat sexless person. as though her strength and skill cancel out her femininity. the pictures show Carver, on the other hand, sliming her, at work, during a case, which is really inappropriate. we all know that another way lots of men manage feelings of insecurity about strong women is by objectifying them - disregarding their personhood and focusing only on their sexuality. what i'm thinking is: Bobby is obviously not threatened, and i dare say he does not conceive of her as 'sexless.' and he's huge. and very smart. and has a reputation for being slightly unpredictable. if i was Eames, he's exactly who i'd want for a partner. Bobby is the 'best defense' against A-holes in a toxic work environment. |

Do y'all think that Carver warmed up to Bobby thru the years? Here we are still just in the second season and he is definitely in "opposition". I thought Carver had a "slow learning curve"...I mean, how long did it take him to realize that Bobby is always right and that they are playing for the same team and he should trust him?! I do realize that it doesn't always work that way, especially IRL, but I got a little tired of Carver always giving Bobby a hard time. I felt like Carver was basically a good guy, but a little slimey. I bet he wore too much cologne. About Eames.... remember in Jones when Henry was hitting on her? He said (paraphrased) "I bet when guys find out you're a cop, they either try to push you around or they run away." Alex replied "You've just described all my Saturday nights." Even though she was just acting with Henry, the way she said that comment made me think it was true. Bobby IS a good, supportive partner! He loves watching her in action! Remember:1. Her telling Bishop that strip clubs charge 20% tax and Bobby says "See what you missed not working vice?" 2. His proud smile when she asks Lewis "who you tryin' to outrun?" 3. The adoring look on his face in TWSH when she says "let's put them out of our misery" and looks up something for him on her laptop. 4. The way he watches her when she takes the lead at Lady Harrington's party in "Privilege". More? Not only is he NOT threatened by her, but he admires and respects her!

I love that list, skittles. there are sssooo many more instances like this, I don't even think I've noticed them all... so many already in seasons 1 & 2... I didn't bother mentioning all the ones I noticed because they happen so often, like once an ep almost. but I love it. She's started to do it to, at the point I'm at in ssn two. it's cool seeing this thing slowly growing. It really helps having the DVD's, not having to wait a week in between the episodes. the curve/flow of their ship is clearer & more vibrant. ship! |
