->this one was filmed earlier on, and aired "out of order" just mho, judging by their appearances

->Lily Carlyle's lawyer says to her: "you're out of your depth, so keep your mouth shut and do what I tell you." There is also a bit of the ocean motif in this ep (the place where the dad was killed, and went running every day, was at a dock/boatyard of some sort). Just wondering if the title-maker-upper dudes were pulling the same thing here that they did with Blind Spot, like, using a line that "really really intense" fans would remember from the show as a title later on, suggesting a connection between the two somehow. (referring to "Depths" of course)

->there's a dude called Eddie Dutton. like, there aren't enough names in the world to use? I know coincidences happen, but usually in TV land they don't... seriously.

->Eames says "there he goes, down the rabbit hole" -- she's used this exact same line already once season one, I think.

->here's where we find out that G was in narcotics previously, and E in vice.

->there's a bit more tension between G/E & Deakins this ep, maybe that has to do with the title somehow, and all the mentions of "upstairs"...

->Bobby: "you used her, John. She was weak and you used her. and that really pisses me off."
I'm guessing this is where this theory about Goren comes from - that one of his sore spots, like Eames' with women being abused, is women being taken advantage of when they are weak. I've watched this before, but never realized we get a sense of this so early on.
I find it interesting that both of those "peeves" (understatement of the century) are similar. I can see both of them working Special Victim's or something together some day.

EF: ->there's a dude called Eddie Dutton. like, there aren't enough names in the world to use? I know coincidences happen, but usually in TV land they don't... seriously.

They do this a LOT in the L&O universe. There was Alex the lawyer on SVU, Alex the lawyer on the mothership, and our Alex of course. Don't have time right now but soon I'll make a list of name repeats. The one that has always confused me the most? WHY Joe and Jo?

EF: ->here's where we find out that G was in narcotics previously, and E in vice.

Woulda loved to have seen her in those fur coats and halter tops! :D

Yes, and it is also a glimpse into Bobby's large heart and I think we all loved him a little more after this.

yeah, that Alex thing has long confuzzled me. I brought it up on the board I was a member of years ago, and others came to the conclusion that perhaps the writers of all these shows don't necessarily know what names the others are using, that just because they're all L&O's, doesn't necessarily mean the folk creating them communicate on a regular basis. I gueesss that could make sense, but I find it hard to believe that such critical things as main character names are not cleared with a higher authority before they go through, like, Dick himself perhaps?? idk man..
This bugged me because when I first began watching, it was like 2003 or so and Alex Cabot was on SVU. I never even knew about that third one you speak of. wow. *shakes head* I guess, if I'm gonna stand by my "real life" thing, (see CI returning for 10th season thread) I should welcome this type of repeat, because it can happen in real life.

I was going to mention something about the halter tops comment, and how the guy looks her up and down when he says it... like he's visualizing it <_< - and the looks the two of them exchange/shoot in his direction as he's leaving. priceless.

agreed.
however, not in my case exactly because i didn't view these episodes as they were airing originally... but I get your drift! - especially as a woman.

i had posted a long and snotty rebuttal to something ef wrote, like she's a noromo or something. it's gone.

:)
suffice to say that we agree: Bobby Goren is intolerant of professional indiscretion, misdemeanor. etc.

the date stamp says January. vdo's teeth are 'au natural'.
way out of order. Paulie's right. some of s1 takes place in a previous year. or something like that. idk.

i'm easily ... uh ... you know ...

this pic is to illustrate two things:

1. they have a huge budget. this scene is 65 seconds long, and damn near every person on the sidewalk behind them (can't say for sure about the traffic on the street) is a paid performer. otherwise, they'd be gawking into the camera.
i'm trying to imagine how much money it costs to shut down a block of NYC for a couple of hours in the middle of the day.
cha-ching.

2. you have to use a special lens to keep the words on a sign in focus.

these pics are to illustrate one thing alone.
Bobby has very strong feelings about John Hampton taking advantage of Lily Carlyle.
Posted Image

Posted Image
he says Hampton's behaviour is 'indefensible.'

what'd Hampton do?
rg: "giving drugs to a girl who's not old enough to drink, taking money from her ..." (and - by now he's fairly certain - his cowardly murder of Lily's loving father for the heinous crime of being a good father and trying to run off a louse. all to maintain his control of Lily. creep.)

for this, he has earned Goren's disgust. (mine, too.)

HARPING. UNICORN RANTS AND RANTS ABOUT NELDA. IGNORE IF NECESSARY.

what'd Nelda do?

she manipulates Lusa the immigrant housekeeper with lies and threats, gains illegal access to the private home of one of her seriously ill and very vulnerable patients, withdraws life saving medication from the patient without his knowledge, allows him to succumb to depression and take his own life. then she lies about it, and then murders Lusa with malice aforethought, lies a whole lot more to cover up her actions ... and that's just the illegal stuff. it's not even mentioning that Nelda suggests something disparaging about Eames - and all that is well before he shows up at her building, before he has coffee with her.

just sayin' ...

the Bobby Goren established here in season one in 'the insider' could never feel anything like affection for a cold, calculating, selfish killer like Nelda Carlson.

to paraphrase Bobby: 'Nelda used Ray. He was weak and she used him. and that really pisses him off.'

(ship!)

I agree with you about Nelda and Leslie. and about the "taking advantage of" thing. I wasn't suggesting it was only about the weak women. But in the wording I chose to refer to that particular quote from this episode, I can see how it looks that way.
yes, taking in all of the information we have about him, seasons 1-9, your analysis is correct.

uni: i really wanted it to mean something. if someone can find a unified meaning in the repeating names, i'd appreciate it.

I second!
If it doesn't mean anything, I think it's stupid. but that's just mho.

on the names, I have another from The Insider you can add to your list. it's about phonetics, the spelling is different, so I didn't include it in my initial post on this ep, but this one is a big deal:
FBI Agent Wallis.
when you see it, it's like a totally different thing. but hearing it in the ep, is like, eerie. Wallace ooooooo *shudder* :P

and, idk if ppl know this or not, but not only are there Liz Rodgers & sister Liz Eames, but Olivet is one too. Just found that out. wacky tobaccie.

and the Derek Jeter comment. so we gather that Eames is a Yankees fan. yes?
or does one wish for a Derek Jeter foot massage if one is a Mets fan? sorry. i'm not a baseball fan (i'm rebelling because it's my 'family game' ... dad pitched no hitters in his day. i can't hit the broad side of a barn with a basketball, and i wear glasses, so invariably whichever ball is in play will find my face. *sigh* )
not joking. i really don't know. i've never been to the east.

->Eames says "there he goes, down the rabbit hole" -- she's used

I kinda thought that Eames said that more than once, the other time was in "The Good Child" when the daughter went out the hotel room window.

I didn't even know who Derek Jeter was.

but it's one of the funniest Eames quips anyway!!

(I was too lazy to Google the dude, I just assumed it was someone good looking, and that's what made it funny...)

Wow. Somehow I missed checking in on this thread since the 13th. Lots of good stuff!
Unicorn, you showed us just how much we learned about G/E in the first season and how that knowledge can help us understand later episodes. Also, the pics are great! :)

My thoughts on the names? I think maybe they are just playing it safe? Choosing names that are fairly common so we pay attention to the character and not get preconceived ideas about them because of a distinctive name? IDK. Sometimes I've thought the name-giver -writer must be out of touch. Some of the younger (teen) characters have had (IMO ) old-fashioned names. But the Alex's, Liz's and Jo(e)s? Appears careless to me. Oh and in season 4 "Beast"... the dentist's name is Dr. ROSS! LOL!

Unicorn, sounds like I play ball like you! Yeah it's the glasses- whenever something is flying toward me I do a flinchy scrunch -up -the -face thing. Now I don't mind sending a ball AWAY from me when it won't return (golf, bowling) but I'm still not very good.

Callie-Yes she DID use the "Rabbit Hole" phrase in "The Good Child"!

Uni, EF: Don't know if Eames was a Yankees fan, Derek Jeter fan, or a "good looking guy is rubbing my feet with his big hands" fan!

more names to add:

SVU: new lawyer chickie played by Sharon Stone's name is Jo.
LOLA: Terence Howard's character (also a lawyer)'s name is Joe.

someone made a great makeshift list of repeats, was that in the post you deleted, uni? I was sure it was in this thread, :( it had all the donnys, dannys, dennys, etc.

Vanishing Act: "lovely assistant" is Theresa.

I think there was another one. I forget.
