ssoo, I'm pretty sure recently someone was talking about this one but I couldn't find the conversation to continue so sorry bout that... something about how Eames isn't in a lot of the ep... anyone know where that is?
Anyways, it's true. Goren does a whole heck of a lot of stuff without her, I mean, shouldn't the senior partner be there for some of this stuff? (2X in court, negotiations with Carver, interviewing suspects, etc etc)
but, as with the title thing (see titles thread), I think there could be an explanation for this...

I believe this episode was originally meant to be the pilot. I think it was shot first, and was meant to be "One". (there's also a mention of narcissism in this one, btw, in case that theory about "one"'s title is correct).
here's why:
- first of all, the two main shots of VDO & KE in the original opening credits (the pic with the actor's name on it) are stills from this episode. I know filming is usually 6-10 eps ahead of airtime, and so the credits of most shows, to start with, contain all sorts of stuff from the first few eps. as this one does. But there were tons of good caps in eps 1-6 that they could have used. is it coincidence they are both from this one? perhaps. or someone just wanted to get that part done sooner, and picked both from the first footage they had. (this is my main reason for thinking this)
- also, the lack of Eames means something to me, I don't know whether maybe Kathryn had something to say about the pilot showcasing Goren almost exclusively, or whether the showrunners watched it back and realized it was less than true to the series, or at least shouldn't be viewers' first impression of the team. I would agree. I think One makes a far better pilot. ESPECIALLY for this reason. But I can see them originally doing that in the pilot. Vincent was the main attraction back then. I understand, I know he had a lot to do with the show's creation and how it came to be what it is. so I don't really scrutinize anyone for this decision, it's just interesting, is all. <_< I think they realized after playback that Eames needed to be in it more (still not enough, but yeah)... KE has said many a time that she has fought for Eames, in many aspects, case involvement, importance, personal life, and of course, airtime. I never thought it was that big of a deal. (but that could be because Kate was the first thing that drew me to the series, I always had my eye on her, not Goren. except of course when Goren's being "crazy". ) but if this was the first thing they shot, then perhaps she's referring to fighting for Eames between eps 1 & 2... who knows, we have no idea how much time was inbetween any of these, or what order they were first in, we speculate, but --

- the detectives' appearances. this could toootally be my imagination, but it seems to me almost like Bobby has less gray here.
and Eames' hair is VERY similar (pretty much exactly) to how it was in One. just sayin.

-the amount of Carver time. Law & Order. nuf said.

-aaand, the title. there's no deep(er/second) meaning that I can see, at least yet. it's certainly not out of the question, one of you will probably be able to see something I cannot. but maybe they couldn't come up with something that fits the pattern of all the other titles because this was not its original title. if that makes sense. reading it back, it kinda doesn't, haha :ph43r:

that's all for that theory. nothing much else to say that's shippy about this one, except for a Carver touch on Eames' back, which wasn't especially significant standing alone. just keep it in mind for the tally, I guess ;) did seem a little unnecessary to me. he touched her more than Goren has touched her so far.

I find this episode quite boring (still enjoyable, just compared to most of the others...). and the case is really hard for me to keep up with properly, I just have to let some of it go and keep watching, or I'd be rewinding forever.

I thought that "One" was out of sequence too. If "The Extra Man" was originally supposed to be the series premier then I'm not surprised they changed it. I just assumed that for the series premier they decided on an episode that was more attention grabbing. You have to admit that "One" with the murder of the college kids, the diamonds, and the anal sex certainly packed more of an attention getting punch. :o

exactly. and the original premise of the show, the "criminal intent" angle, where Goren figures it out/totally just attacks the criminal on an intellectual level (much more often later on with the help of his "dance" partner) is WAY more showcased in One. I can see how it's definitely there with this Dupont dude, coming from an orphanage, and their intense phone conversations. but it just lacks the drama that One has. good choice, powersthatbe! (keep up the good decisions <_< !!)
