I saw this again recently and watched through my new LOCI eyes looking for parallels and symbolism. Maybe I'm thinking too hard and imagining things but here is what I noted: Paul is very similar to Goren. Bobby told Eames in "Bright Boy" that he had to see the school counselor after taking a personality test. You get the feeling that he was not one of the "in" crowd. He took up playing basketball but quit when it didn't get his father's attention , as revealed in "Mad Hops". He was not close to the man he thought was his father. His mom was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Paul was described to be in his own world, not popular, and awkward with few friends- an outcast at school and at home. There is a history of schizophenia in Paul's family. His dad is a ruthless businessman and very tough on Paul whom he regards as a disappointment. Where I see a difference is that Paul has few friends but Bobby seems to have quite a few such as the tatoo guy in "one", Lewis, and the one from when he was in CID that he mentions in TWAH. And of course Declan and Jo Gage. Also in season one Eames says "I love meeting your buddies". Another difference is that Paul is repeatedly referred to as weak ,and I never saw Bobby as weak. Always sensitive and sometimes vulnerable, but never weak. IMHO. The guys in Paul's class make up "Joe Cardinal" and Tessa falls for him in a cyber relationship. What is the deal with using the name "JOE" ? I mean, first there is Jo Gage, then we find out Alex's husband's name was Joe, and now Joe Cardinal? Why not name him something else? Is this supposed to be symbolic? Or just the lack of the writer's imaginations? The one line that made me feel REAL shippy was when Tessa said Paul told her that he "loved her way more than Joe did". Is there a parallel here? Or was I just seeing something because I watched this late at night when I couldn't sleep? I have some compare/contrast notes on Tessa and Alex also but have run out of time- my evening for the ballet carpool! I'll be back later.... |

This is one of my favorite episodes too. I love it when yet another actor from "Oz" shows up on LOCI. In this case, it's the father of the tough girl pack leader who was "posing from the hood". I agree that Bobby felt particularly compassionate about Paul. But I think that Goren as a young man at least, probably had lots of friends. I think it's telling that early in the first season, the writers made an effort to show that he has among his friends, both a forger and a biker. So little else is exposed about him at that point, other than he's a lapsed altar boy, and got into car wrecks (other 'bad boy' signs), I can't help but think (in hindsight) that they were already laying the groundwork for his possibly - at least in the viewers perspectives being a little to close to the edge. Years later, we hear from Jo Gage that Declan thought he "could go either way", and Declan knew him back when. |

It has taken a few days for me to get back here (the kids are home on summer break)! Yes Paulie- I loved OZ! Got the DVDs and watched them last summer. Might be time to rewatch. I think Bobby was compassionate towards Paul but agree that early on we were shown that he had a social life- esp. in his youth! Thinking about Tessa... I didn't really see a lot in common with Alex except she was the "weak link" when all the other girl's parents "lawyered up" because her mom was a teacher. In other words, not rich. Alex's dad was a cop. Not rich. (My parents were teachers and I greatly admire police officers. I'm NOT putting them down! Just saying in Tessa's school there was a difference between her financial situation and that of her classmates !) Back to JOE CARDINAL. His e-mail name was Love40? What's in a name? Does this mean anything? Anyone? Bueller? Anyone? Anyway, I wasn't actually trying to make a point in all of this- just some observations. |

"Love-40" would be a tennis score, I believe. I don't play tennis but I'm pretty sure "Love" means you have zero, and 40 means you're one point away from winning. I'd never taken notice of Joe Cardinal's email before. That's interesting. I wonder if it is a tennis reference. |

Oh Oh Oh This is sooooo good! I'm not a tennis player either but this is soooo good! I think it is a tennis analogy. H. Jack Walker III is the guy who created Joe Cardinal. I think "Joe's" e-mail name means: Tessa score zero, H. Jack 1 point from "winning" which in this case means blackmailing Tessa's mom into resigning! (Doing a happy dance!) NOTHING IS ACCIDENTAL OR INSIGNIFICANT!EVERYTHING IS CAREFULLY THOUGHT OUT AND PLANNED! THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES! (I know I am quoting someone...I'm sorry for not remembering who or where) If something as obscure as Joe Cardinal's e-mail name has meaning, then "Your heart" is a big shout out- HELLO SHIPPY PEOPLE! HERE!
