This is interesting. My cousin is going to South Africa for a study abroad, and I told him about a program that would let me go to Turkey for a semester. He was fairly adamant that Turkey would be the last place on his list, because it's "so dangerous" and unstable. He thinks South Africa's safer. I think he's full of shit.

I should email him this link and say "yes, much safer than Turkey."

I'd email it to him. If even foreign diplomats (or the nation's own UN ambassador!) can't avoid being attacked and robbed over there, then somehow I doubt regular tourists would be safe either.
