Two very interesting issues in the news. Firstly, Finland. The Nursing Unions organised a mass walkout. Not just a strike, but resignation to get around the minimum emergency care. Of course this has massive implications, not the least that two heavily pregnant women got flown over to Uppsala hospital. (EU freedom of movement ftw?) Secondly, Sweden. The Riksdag (aka Parliament) voted for the removal of the ban on foreigners having abortions in Sweden. Why is this controversial? Swedish women can choose to have an abortion up to 18 weeks without any reasons. (EU freedom of movement ftl?) Obviously there could be ways for countries to get around it: as it is public policy not to allow abortions after x weeks, EU citizens could be forbidden from having state-funded abortions after their country's limit. But then the service of abortion is available in general in that country. We'll have to wait until a case gets into the ECJ. Anyway, opinions? |
