So, read an article about the French elections upcoming. Sarkozy vs. Royal. Any of your French/francophiles/eurotypes have a strong opinion one way or another on it? I haven't been following too closely the race, last major news I heard was a few months back and was moustly about Dominic Le Pen (curse you, dorm, for obfuscating my NPR broadcasts!). |

A plague on both their houses. Sarkozy's a far-right racist demagogue whose election would be a disaster for France and will probably provoke another bout of race riots within the next year or so. Royal is a Blairite imbecile with no redeeming characteristics (although, amusingly, Blair himself supports Sarkozy, which reflects more on Blair than either of the two candidates at stake). |

Royal seems to be the lesser of the evils, but this shouldn't be taken as an endorsement of a third candidate. French politics is up the shitter every which way you look. |

From what I've gathered, Royal wants to introduce a 4 hour workweek and a 30 euro minimum wage, and Sarkozy wants to stick children up chimneys. Economically speaking, France probably needs Sarkozy - France needs to boost it's economy pretty drastically, and I don't think that Royal's policies can deliver that - I'm one of those who believes that one needs an economically right government for a spell to boost the economy, followed by a lefty to even it out, etc. and France has been on the left for too long. TBPH, at least the French have a proper left/right choice. What do we have to look forward to next election? The badger vs. the stout. And everyone knows badgers have tuberculosis. And that a stout is simply a weasal trying to be cute. |

France's staggering unemployment, youth violence and run-down military demonstrate that its current politically correct, quasi-socialist system of governance has not worked. Sarkozy's really the only one offering to reform it, so I say him. |

French socialism has always made me uneasy, but since I'm more of a student of historical nations, I just treated as that aspect of the French revolution that never quite got worked out. To be honest, I think that Sarkozy's the right thing for France. The social and economic problems that I keep hearing about aren't going to go away immediatly, and there will probably be more riots, but if Sarkozy is the brilliant politican he's been made out to be, I think he might pull it off. I don't think Royal's a good choice... increasing socialist policies is not a good thing. Some friends of mine life in Swisterland and visit France and Italy often, and I can't believe how much vacation time they get. It's socialist economic restrictions, I think, that are hurting France and causing the racial tension. So, we'll see what happens. I'd like to see France pull of what Germany did with Angela Merkel, but I'm not keeping my hopes up. |

Why is generous vacation time a bad thing? French productivity is actually no worse than the US's, if I remember correctly. And, by and large, the French aren't as stressed and socially traumatised as Americans. It's easy to bash France but a lot of its problems are only actualyl problems if you have an 'anglo-saxon' view of work and life. And who actually sucks at productivity? Britain. But apparently we're a healthy go-getting transatlantic economy - go figure. |
