I dunno, I think the more constructive method would be to not arm everyone, and instead stop people having guns? <_< |

This is an unusual viewpoint for someone from Texas to have, I think (though not so uncommon in Austin)....but it has never ceased to disgust me how ridiculously lax gun control is here in the US. Idiots like the NRA and corrupt bastards like the gun lobby shove "the right to bear arms" rhetoric down everyone's throat, and try to shove unpleasantness like what happened at VaTech under the rug. And our spineless politicians go along with it because the gun lobby has lots of money for them, and it's not politically expedient to do something like try to protect people from madmen with guns. Hell, even the Democrats are totally spineless on gun control now. It makes me sick, frankly. |

Didn't the 'we're sorry for your loss' statement from the white house have a bit tacked on to the end about how gun laws wouldn't be changing? Dude, so not the time. |

If that's true, it disgusts me even more....but this administration is not exactly known for its tact, so it wouldn't shock me much. |

If any one person should encourage the US to realise how frightfully stupid it is to allow any village idiot to own a gun, it should be the village idiot in charge of the country. ![]() I mean, would you trust this guy with a gun? The guy behind him is putting his life at great risk. This made me laugh, in spite of the subject: http://www.unconfirmedsources.com/?itemid=2436 |

So I'm coming to the conclusion that I must be a murderer. I'm not overly social, I barely know the name of my roommates, I've written things that where incredibly violent, I believe I must have suffered from depression at least once in my life, and my default certainly isn't happy and careless. Do you want to lock me up now or wait for a bit? |

Right now, just to be safe, Clare! You never know these days. Honestly, gun "control" isn't the issue, it's gun enforcement. Both sides of the aisle in America are at fault for refusing to give an inch either way- the right bellowing about "rights" and the left trying to get obscenely restrictive gun laws passed. But see, you don't need a background check to buy a car. And yet automobile deaths are much more common than gun deaths! I propose background checks on all vehicle purchases, a four-day waiting period, and mandatory jailtime for anyone who buys a car illegally. That'll show people that they can't be trusted with potentially dangerous devices! Also, since the shooter was a Korean, that obviously means Asians are dangerous communists bent on conquering America. We should pass, oh, I don't know, an Asian Exlcusion Act or something to keep them out. But, y'know, I had an inkling that as soon as the initial newstorm kicked in, the moralizing would start and the finger would get oiled up for blame-pointing. Seriously, our culture is so fucked up that we can't simply say "this was a tragedy committed by a sad, dangerous individual." we have to say "this was caused by videogames, gun control laws, and the GOP." Oh, and those gol-danged furriners, apparently. |

From the little I've seen, A-A has it spot on. How many shootings will it take for people to say 'hang on, perhaps there are problems beyond gun ownership'. Society is sick, and not just in the US. |

Actually yes. It's Cheney who is a known friendly fire shooter not Bush. I'd feel safer behind Bush with a shotgun than I would Ford with a golf club. |

I agree that there's too much fingerpointing on the issue of guns, but that is sadly true of just about everything in American society today: fingerpointing rather than taking responsibility. I also have to admit that the extended coverage of the shooting is beginning to bother me a bit. I can't help but think that the media frenzy will glamorize the idea of getting a gun and shooting people for people who are in similar mindsets of the VaTech shooter. I really wish the media would just conclude that this was the unfortunate act of a very disturbed person (which it was) and move on. Oh, and Clare, if they have to lock you up for that, then I have to go too. I am pretty much the same way (except one of my roomies is annoying me to death lately, so I know his name all too well). |

Apparently one of the other problems is the federal government and in this case virginia law was not on the same page. Apparently its against the law fror a person who is mentally disturbed from aquiring a handgun. However since the Virginia judge who earlier sentenced the perp in a stalking case and said the shooter needed mental health treatments did not have the boy committed to a facility, the background check came back clear. somehow this should have been included in the information about the perp, but wasn't. Now I'm a conservative and really don't like government intrusion in my life or larger government for that matter. But in the efforts of public safety, I'm willing to make some sacrifices and compromises about my privacy. Perhaps a central information storage facility that law enforcement can use for background checks which includes local, state and federal criminal records and medical records(especiallly those dealing with mental health) needs to be created. |
