Deadly shooting at US university
map
At least 20 people have been killed and more injured after a gunman went on the rampage at the campus of Virginia Tech university in Virginia, US.

Police say there were two separate shooting incidents - one at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a student dormitory, and Norris Hall, an engineering building.

The incidents were about two hours apart. Police say that the gunman at Norris Hall is dead.

The state university in the town of Blacksburg is home to 26,000 students.

This is breaking news and there's not much info yet, but wow. Two different incidents two hours apart?

Chief: At least 20 dead in campus shootings
POSTED: 12:49 p.m. EDT, April 16, 2007
Story Highlights
• NEW: Police chief says at least 20 people are dead, some of them students
• University reporting that a suspected shooter is in custody, another sought
• AP: 1 dead, 1 wounded in first reported shooting on Virginia Tech campus
• Student describes situation as "mayhem"; says 2 students jumped from window

(CNN) -- The Virginia Tech police chief said at least 20 people were killed in twin shootings on the Blacksburg campus Monday morning.

"Some victims were shot in a classroom," Chief Wendell Flinchum said, adding that the gunman was dead.

"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said university President Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified." (Map of Blacksburg)

The attacks mark the worst school shooting incident since 1999 when Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed 12 students and a teacher before killing themselves at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.

A hospital spokeswoman told The Associated Press that 17 Virginia Tech students were being treated for gunshot wounds and other injuries.

Sharon Honaker at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center told CNN that four patients had been transported there, one in critical condition.

One person was killed and others were wounded at multiple locations inside a dormitory about 7:15 a.m., Flinchum said. Two hours later, another shooting at Norris Hall, the engineering science and mechanics building, resulted in multiple casualties, the university reported. (Watch police, ambulances hustle to the scene Video)

The first reported shooting occurred at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a co-ed dormitory that houses 895 students. The dormitory, one of the largest residence halls on the 2,600-acre campus, is located near the drill field and stadium.

Amie Steele, editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, said one of her reporters at the dormitory reported "mass chaos."

The reporter said there were "lots of students running around, going crazy, and the police officers were trying to settle everyone down and keep everything under control," according to Steele.

Kristyn Heiser said she was in class about 9:30 a.m. when she and her classmates saw about six gun-wielding police officers run by a window.

"We were like, 'What's going on?' Because this definitely is a quaint town where stuff doesn't really happen. It's pretty boring here," said Heiser during a phone interview as she sat on her classroom floor.

Student Matt Waldron said he did not hear the gunshots because he was listening to music, but he heard police sirens and saw officers hiding behind trees with their guns drawn.

"They told us to get out of there so we ran across the drill field as quick as we could," he said.

Waldron described the scene on campus as "mayhem." (Watch a student's recording of police responding to loud bangs Video)

"It was kind of scary," he said. "These two kids I guess had panicked and jumped out of the top story window and the one kid broke his ankle and the other girl was not in good shape just lying on the ground."

Madison Van Duyne said she and her classmates in a media writing class were on "lockdown" in their classrooms. They were huddled in the middle of the classroom, writing stories about the shootings and posting them online.

The university is updating its 26,000 students through e-mails, and an Internet webcam is broadcasting live pictures of the campus.

The shootings came three days after a bomb threat Friday forced the cancellation of classes in three buildings, WDBJ in Roanoke reported. Also, the 100,000-square-foot Torgersen Hall was evacuated April 2 after police received a written bomb threat, The Roanoke Times reported.

After the Monday shootings, students were instructed to stay indoors and away from windows, police at the university said.

"A gunman is loose on campus. Stay in buildings until further notice. Stay away from all windows," read a warning from the university.

"Virginia Tech has canceled all classes. Those on campus are asked to remain where they are, lock their doors and stay away from windows. Persons off campus are asked not to come to campus," a statement on the university Web site said.

Listening to the news, it said that it is thought that at least 22 were killed.

Last year there was a shooting at a Montreal college. It's all very sad and I really can't understand why things like this happen. It makes me regret bringing two children into a world like this. My oldest daughter is in kindergarten and I still worry that some crazed maniac will find their way into her school.

I honestly hope that the gunman is actually dead and that there are no others running around the University.
Such amusing fiction, these stories they tell. It always comes to this. If they really had a desire to live, they would've been more aware of how easy it is to die, would've chosen their actions more wisely. In these moments, you can tell they're not regretting having hurt you. They're regretting doing it to your face.

You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everything else.

As of now, 32 people are confirmed dead. One person from West Ambler Johnston Hall and at least 20 people from Norris Hall have been killed. The shooter as well has been killed, but it is uncertain as to whether it is a student or not.

Personally, the shooting incident that intrigues me the most was the one in Taber, Alta in the aftermath of the Columbine shootings. A kid who I think had been suspended or something walked into a school with a shotgun, sees a girl and a teacher (each of which he told to get lost) then sees 4 guys turn a corner, shoots at them, wounds 2, kills 1, then lowers his gun and leans against a wall until police disarmed him.

On a different note, I think the only incidents involving elementary school shootings that I've heard of were ones where another kid got hold of daddy's gun and took it to school.

There was a bomb set off on the other side of my campus last Thursday. Blew some concrete through a guys' dorm window. Thankfully no one was hurt.

But god damn, this is shitty.

Most I've heard of on this campus was a stabbing incident - though it is suspected to have been over drugs rather than random victim.

In fact, there was a bigger hubbub over a prof who blew up when a pair of students walked into her class on Women's rights or something like that, turned over a laundry basket of clothes, and then asked her when they'd be washed by. The incident got a Resident Assistant fired and Residence Services had to spend a lengthy amount of time protecting the students from being evicted from their rooms (I think, at one point, the entire floor had been told it was being evicted by the Registrar's office before Residence Services said "it's not within your power to do that")

EDIT: I should note the entire incident was a prank for a video contest the residence was having.

Er....yeah.....quite off topic there.....

The final tally as of last night was 2 from the first shooting, 30 from the second + the gunner

EDIT: I'm debating whether to rant about the reaction thus far - specifically the "why didn't they lock the University down after the first shooting"

As to why they didn't lock down- It's a land grant school, with somewhere around 23,000 undergrads on campus, in a huge area. The police and the administration didn't have complete information, students were already on their way to class, etc etc etc. MSU folks here are already beating the drum for a proper disaster plan, which is ridiculous because we have 45,000 students in an area the size of a small city, many of whom live off campus and/or commute.

Dr. Phil is trying to blame this on video games and violent popular culture. Ridiculous, knowing that the murderer was a known loner/depressive who didn't talk to anyone, had few friends, and was referred to counseling for his distrubing creative writings.

And while I truly feel for the students, and understand how horrible this is, if I get another invitation to join a Facebook group about the Vtech massacre I'm going to scream.

It's not even that. The first incident was a double homicide at the most - yes, with a gun, but still just a double homicide. In fact, the school thought it was a murder-suicide at the time. Do you shut down an entire University and get loudspeakers going that you had a double homicide on campus? It doesn't make any sense!

And of course he blamed it upon violent video games. We'll have rap music, TV, movies, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. Oh no, let's not look at the possibility that the individual needed help or that every so often, the most peaceful society to have ever existed is going to get a nutjob that it will either help or it will see do something fucking stupid. Maybe the NRA will actually endorse legislation saying that non-Americans can't own guns.

(Actually, I will be fucking surprised if that type of legislation doesn't get pushed SOMEWHERE in the US because of this)

From what I understand the feeling isn't that there was a problem with him having a gun it's that the people who died have their own.

Well if the people who died had a gun they would have been able to kill him before he killed them.
