I haven't really researched this but the soccer is the original football. From that football came rugby, and from rugby came American football. So therefore, soccer gets the privilege of being called football because not only do the people calling it that vastly outnumber the people calling it soccer, it's what American football was named after anyway.

Completely not the point at all. FL was irritated because he was TOLD, not asked, TOLD to speak a certain way. That it involved football of any kind (and I don't care what you call which one) was completely coincidental. FL made that fairly clear in one of his previous posts.

To sum up:

Football - irrelevant, no point in pursuing that line

Asking for clarity in issues where some confusion might occur - would be appreciated, but didn't happen

Dictating language patterns - definitely not appreciated, don't do it unless you wish to be told where to go

The Administration - has weighed in, the matter should be dropped

This thread - about Volleyball, and the hooligans thereof

Enough - is enough.
TBlack: Tits Des, tits. Yes dear, I saw.
FL: Fine, so I'm opinionated - old news.

It's not that I mind using "American Football". I mind when I'm TOLD to use American football while the other person happily calls soccer, football. If they want to use Football, that's fine - so long as I can be lazy about naming when I'm talking. If they want me to call it American Football, fine, so long as they call it soocer.

And really, it's not about Football - it's about dialect elitism. Football just happens to be the instance of elitism being involved here.

<sigh> Don't take it so personally, like I'm somehow condemming you for inventing the word soccer.
